stc3248's 2014 small wild grow

Well...after much debate between mama and I, WE (she) have come to the conclusion that I may have grown a few too many plants the past few seasons???

2012 I grew out about 70 plants not including the huge number of ornamental peppers which about doubled that number. I didn't regularly harvest the ornamental plants so I ain't counting those...and in spite of some virus issues I was able to put together an epic season. So epic in fact that I had to purchase a chest freezer to store all the excess pods for future processing.

Here is one 2012 pull...I had numbers like this EVERY weekend! My season started (too) early and lasted until Christmas that year. I finally finished processing them just before I started pulling pods from my 2013 plants...

2013 was a "smaller" grow and in spite of my best efforts to keep the target of 20 keepers I promised the wife...I still ended up with over 50 plants. The "problem" in 2013 was...I really had no problems. My plants stayed healthy which meant...even more and bigger pulls...

A 2013 pull...

and another...

The hits once again kept on coming. Every weekend...thousands of pods. Which is a great freaking problem to have, but not according to mama. :stop:

So this year is gonna be a real deal small grow. I have talked her into letting me grow out 5 plants all of which are awesome wilds that I am super excited about. All 5 varieties are from John (Pr0digal_son) I have so many cool varieties left in the seed bank, but they'll have to wait until I have more time to dedicate to my garden and family.

For the past two years I have been a "geobachelor" which is a military term for folks that are stationed away from their families. I am only home on weekends...so dedicating so much of my few days home for the past two years to my grow has really been kinda selfish.

All that being said, I am still a grow addict...so I have talked her into allowing a few more "must have" varieties. So to my 5 wilds I will be adding a couple staple varieties...oh and wait, I am overwintering 7 plants...well really 11 but 4 are just ornamentals for Bonchi plants.

One overwinter is my growdown winner Birgit's Locoto...

Official measurement for the contest was just over 11' tall. Seeds started on Valentines Day and final measurement on Halloween...fun contest. Haven't seen a growdown posted for this season??? Keep your eyes peeled folks, tons of fun!!!

Here is the list for 2014...

Well not really a list as much as a photo...started 4 seeds each.

Soaked overnight...

Into peat pellets...

and set in the magic temp zone on the heat mat...

I verify temps using a meat thermometer and will monitor until It stays in the right temp area.

Temps slowly climbing for now...and there won't be much to report on for a while. These varieties are notorious for slow germination.

C. Tovarii 0/4
C. Exile Chacoense 0/4
C. Eximium 0/4
C. Galapagoense 0/4
Huge Rocopica 0/4

To those awesome varieties add the overwinters:
Birgits Locoto (3)
Romy Mystery Plant (2)
Pequin (1)
Goat's Weed (1)
Manzano (2) (still alive, but not attempting to overwinter...not gonna kill them on purpose though!!!)

I will also be sarting some Jals (Mucho Nacho) and Numex Big Jim's a bit later.

Here are links to my past two season's glogs...in case you're bored and have about a week to try to get through them both.

Here is a shot of some wilds that just popped this week that were sown 48 days ago. I had 3 sprout in under 14 days, and the second round(pictured) sprouted 20-48 days. The plant in the foreground is the same species and sow date.
Thanks John...I got the same thing going on over here....pics to follow.

Congrats on your team making the news. I'm all for this type of preparation, the world is changing right in front of our eyes.
Yeah...the world is an ever changing place. The global guerrilla warfare tactics of the few have the many scared. We'll be ready for a while yet...but our short memory span will get the better of us in the end as always. 10-15 years of peace...and we'll have all but forgotten. A bad thing when you're dealing with cultures that consider the past couple hundred years of our existence recent history.

Nice man! Congrats on the kudos!

Another plus about the 23ws... They're dirt cheap! Though I guess dirt cheap isnt actually cheap when you're using ocean forest.
Thanks MaxCaps! I catch them on sale at Costco $6 for 8 bulbs when they're on sale and they work!!!

Always entertaining coming through here! Awesome working getting some plants in at work, haha! Cool video too, looks like quite the exercise.
Thanks Nick! Yeah...the exercise is a pretty big one. It is conducted throughout the entire fleet. So the coordination required is crazy. There are events taking place simultaneously world wide. Those plants are doing very well at work! I will be potting them up soon...no frost there.

Got some more popping, but most are of the ones I already have established. The Galapagoense and CGN 19198's seem to love my setup and are up to three sprouts each. A couple Chacoense...and then there are the crazy 22792s with 9 of 10 popping in a week! Lol...if they were all that easy I suppose growing them wouldn't be as much fun. Here are a few pics...

A couple ugly ones...Cap. 1530 and another CGN 19198. There stayed a little too wet last week and ain't looking so hot...but I think they'll stay upright.

Here's a new one...First Eximium!!!

Here's a fuzzy pic of the 19198...

Group shot...the strongest growers of the Annuums are the Jalafuego hybrids I am trying out...so far so good on growth habit!!!

That's it for now folks...see you around the glogs!

Look good Shane! Glad to see the others popping!
Thanks J! Me too for sure! Still no Tovarii...and I am all but certain the one Rocopica isn't gonna make it. Other than those everything sowed is now represented. Those two not popping will leave room for the growdown plants...but I ain't giving up hope yet and I can always make a little more room! :shh:

looks like your plants are growing up fast!
Thanks! They're moving...especially the Annuums. Those damn things make it look easy!

Does that one say galapagofalse? Ha ha! Great stuff Shane.
It does look that way...but its a galapagotrue...Ha backatcha!

Your wilds and Annuums are looking strong Shane, keep up the good work buddy!
Thanks Rick...the wilds are requiring a bit more babysitting than I am used to...and time I don't have. With the the more common plants last year I had a solid schedule of watering on Sunday and calling mama on Wednesday to have her water them mid week with no troubles. These are either over or under what they need...and mama's having to check them on Tuesday and Thursdays...which she just LOVES! :liar:

Very cool progress Shane. Do you know where the Chaco in Chacoense comes from? Is it a reference to the ancient puebloans?
Hmmm...good question??? I have no idea...maybe some research is in order, unless someone helps us out?

Well I snapped a couple more pics of the babies yesterday...so without delay.

Another Galapagoense...funny how this one looks iridescent in the photo, but dark green in person. Think its all the grey hairs???

Another shot of the C. Chacoense Var. Exile. She's the wild poster child thus far...a much more refined well kept look than her unshaven all natural sisters.

C. Eximium

54Izdtl.jpg

Transplanted a couple of the better looking CGN 22792s...four containers moving forward. Still with multiples in the original containers. They will get thinned when the alphas make themselves known.

Speaking of Poster Children...This is one of the Jalafuego plants. Very impressive growers and they are supposed to be disease resistant to several viral and bacterial infections! You can see my Zukes, Tomatoes and Tomatillos not pictured are some Cilantro starts as well all in peat pots that will go in the ground this weekend!

Well...messing with my barracks plants late week I found two aphids on the Bubblegum 7 that I brought in. I played hunt and squish, but only found the two...today when I got back to the room I found about 2...dozen. Ughhhh. I didn't find any that had migrated to the new starts, but I didn't want to take any chances so I gave them all a bath. Lacking insecticide I went with a dish soap dunk in the sink. We shall see...I will give them another bath on Thursday and hopefully that knocks them out. Maybe some pics of those tomorrow or Wednesday. They're really taking off...almost as well as my grow shelf!

Happy Monday y'all!
Shane
