stc3248's 2014 small wild grow

Well...after much debate between mama and I, WE (she) have come to the conclusion that I may have grown a few too many plants the past few seasons???

2012 I grew out about 70 plants not including the huge number of ornamental peppers which about doubled that number. I didn't regularly harvest the ornamental plants so I ain't counting those...and in spite of some virus issues I was able to put together an epic season. So epic in fact that I had to purchase a chest freezer to store all the excess pods for future processing.
gallery_5729_53_989628.jpg

Here is one 2012 pull...I had numbers like this EVERY weekend! My season started (too) early and lasted until Christmas that year. I finally finished processing them just before I started pulling pods from my 2013 plants...

2013 was a "smaller" grow and in spite of my best efforts to keep the target of 20 keepers I promised the wife...I still ended up with over 50 plants. The "problem" in 2013 was...I really had no problems. My plants stayed healthy which meant...even more and bigger pulls...

A 2013 pull...

and another...

The hits once again kept on coming. Every weekend...thousands of pods. Which is a great freaking problem to have, but not according to mama. :stop:

So this year is gonna be a real deal small grow. I have talked her into letting me grow out 5 plants all of which are awesome wilds that I am super excited about. All 5 varieties are from John (Pr0digal_son) I have so many cool varieties left in the seed bank, but they'll have to wait until I have more time to dedicate to my garden and family.

For the past two years I have been a "geobachelor" which is a military term for folks that are stationed away from their families. I am only home on weekends...so dedicating so much of my few days home for the past two years to my grow has really been kinda selfish.

All that being said, I am still a grow addict...so I have talked her into allowing a few more "must have" varieties. So to my 5 wilds I will be adding a couple staple varieties...oh and wait, I am overwintering 7 plants...well really 11 but 4 are just ornamentals for Bonchi plants.

One overwinter is my growdown winner Birgit's Locoto...
Q8uHT1O.jpg

Official measurement for the contest was just over 11' tall. Seeds started on Valentines Day and final measurement on Halloween...fun contest. Haven't seen a growdown posted for this season??? Keep your eyes peeled folks, tons of fun!!!

Here is the list for 2014...
MnXBZ8B.jpg

Well not really a list as much as a photo...started 4 seeds each.

Soaked overnight...

Into peat pellets...

and set in the magic temp zone on the heat mat...

WPdRxsr.jpg

I verify temps using a meat thermometer and will monitor until It stays in the right temp area.

8TA4kJ7.jpg

Temps slowly climbing for now...and there won't be much to report on for a while. These varieties are notorious for slow germination.

C. Tovarii 0/4
C. Exile Chacoense 0/4
C. Eximium 0/4
C. Galapagoense 0/4
Huge Rocopica 0/4

To those awesome varieties add the overwinters:
Birgits Locoto (3)
Romy Mystery Plant (2)
Pequin (1)
Goat's Weed (1)
Manzano (2) (still alive, but not attempting to overwinter...not gonna kill them on purpose though!!!)

I will also be sarting some Jals (Mucho Nacho) and Numex Big Jim's a bit later.

Here are links to my past two season's glogs...in case you're bored and have about a week to try to get through them both.

It for now folks...welcome to 2014!!! I will update when I can and show my growroom and the progress of the rest of the overwinter plants...Thanks for looking in, there are a ton of glogs this year!

Everythings looking stellar Shane!

Love the hairy ones!

And boo with aphids, I had a round of them a couple of weeks ago. Starting to see lady bugs here...yeah!

Keep it green!

And oh, don't forget the diesel for the growdown palnts, they love it with a little premium!

Zukes and Maters going to ground already!? You're only 10 weeks ahead of me ;)
Looking good, hairy peppers et al
Yeah...may be a bit too early, but we haven't had a frost in a while. If they get hit, I will just resow...no biggie. They are some hairy little suckers!

everything looking really good, did you just plant one of the jalafuegos? When is your plant out date?
Thanks! I have 7 or 8 Jalafuegos going. Official plant out is around the 19th of March here, but I will wait at least a couple extra weeks before they go outside. We have cool nights almost year round here and only July and August have night time temps in the low 60s They grow much faster early on in the warmth of the grow room.

Hummm, are those peppers called CGNs because they carry the heat of a Nucular Powered Guided Missile Cruiser?

Might be a good naming convention
Haha...no, Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands...but I like yours better Bill!

Boo for the Aphid intruders... looks like it's time to set up the perimeter Chief... ;)
The dish soap dunk did well, but I still found a couple on the plants yesterday so they got another and longer bath last night. They'll be planted out and reinfested soon anyway...

Looking absolutely picture perfect in this Glog Mr. Shane!  Such healthy growth.  Amazing how fast them aphids can colonize on ya.  Get em!
Thanks Jamison! They wilds are testing my patience, they're pickier about too much water than most...but they're still doing fine. I got after the aphids and hopefully knocked them out!!!

Thanks Jeff! Time is definitely on my side when it comes to the grow season...

Thanks Scott! I like them a little European myself!!! Ladybugs are a month out for me...and between now and then is prime aphid season! Thanks for reminding me about the Diesel...worked like a charm!

Got a call from Mama and I have another C. 1530 up and running! I promised a mid week Barracks Grow update so...

Here is how they looked last week...

That's all for now folks, big weekend ahead hopefully. Looking to put the Zukes and Cilantro in the ground...may hold out another week on the Tomatillos and Tomatoes??? We shall see.

Connectivity has been terrible here on base this week, and it took me almost two hours just to upload these pics from last night. Tried to surf glogs a little but most of the pics aren't loading...will get on tomorrow...FRIDAY!!!
Shane

Looking good Shane!

Do these wind up in the dirt? Or do you use pots on the base?

Your weather has been warmer, in fact everyone West of us has been spared this crazy cold winter. I'm thinking unless something wild happens the maters can hit the dirt, I have 3/4 of mine planted and will get the rest in tomorrow. I do have one plus here, I'm home if it's going to get crazy and can take measures.

Have a great weekend!

Amazing work with the desk grow lamp! Way to liven up the workspace. What nightime temps are you going for on the tomatoes and tomatillos?
Nighttime temps are running 48-52 right now...by plant out they'll be in the mid 50's! The desk lamp is working like a charm! The plants here in the barracks are growing like weeds! Only one little 23w 5000k bulb...huh??? Added a fan to toughen them up a bit the ceiling fan wasn't enough.

HillBilly Jeff said:
Love the curtain...peppers look awesome too!!!
Haha...that curtain is a little busy for my blood...but the good thing is it keeps the light out very well when I am on night shifts...those little plants are making life in the barracks much more enjoyable! Almost time for plant out with them...maybe next week. The climate here is frost free, but the night temps are still pretty cool.

RocketMan said:
Wow, your popping them up everywhere Shane. Looking good :)
Haha...not popping them up here...yet just brought up some extras. I may try to germ a couple supers up here before it's all said and done though.

Scott, I will be planting these in containers. It has been a warm one here, we set some records the past few days in the 90s and will set even more later this week. Hard to brag about it when everyone else is in the hurt locker!

I think that's 10??? Thanks for checking in everyone!
Shane

Nice!!!! Glad to see everything running smootly!

Those jals look very good, I see some nice poppers coming at harvest time or some nice jal powder for the quesadillas or nachos.

Love the way those wilds are doing, all that fuzz just looks cool not to mention that nice smell from the leaves. At least the Eximium and the galapagoense.

I also have a CGN 22792 I just haven't got the chance to post pics on the growdown... most likely I'm disqualified already. I need to check in a bit.

That Chacoense Var. Exile is really interesting... looks totally different than mine. I want to compare the differences they have and if they both put out pods sideways. That would be cool.

:fireball: Hope you have an excellent week!! :fireball:

Yeah, plant out time.  Hope you get that chest freezer empty in the next month or two if you want to have somewhere to put them all.

Dinner conversations at the Shane house should be a hoot next week.

Mrs. Shane: " Shane, why are there pots lining our pool again this year. You told me it was only going to be a small wild grow this year. "

Shane: " well we had a few volunteers."

...

Nice update Shane!

Plants and photos are Mas Superb!

Those wilds have a really cool look to them for sure. Good luck on the plant out. Hope your 10 day is more trust worthy than mine on last Saturday turned out ;)

I know...and I am doing all I can to try to kill them! Mama didn't water when I begged her to last week for me and waited another day. The plants were really pissed about that. I lost a couple tomatoes, tomatillos and squash plants...but the peppers pulled through for me. She hates my grow...but doesn't really want to be the one responsible for their deaths either. She was very apologetic and offered to buy my some soil!!!

Thanks Walt...I didn't grow any Jals last year to make more room for the supers figuring I could always grab them at the store. We have some decent Jals in out stores, but the heat is hit or miss. I grew the Mucho Nachos a couple years ago and they were awesome. Not quite as big as advertised on the seed packet, but plenty big, super tasty and packed some nice consistent heat and flavor. Glad I am growing them and also excited about the Jalafuegos I haven't tried before. No real info on here about them, but they get decent reviews elsewhere so I will keep y'all posted on how they turn out. So far they're the most vigorous growers by far, hopefully production to match!

I doubt your DQ'd from the growdown unless you started early??? Still plenty of time to post pics. Jamie and Kevin are kickass folks and real easy going...and its all about fun. The post your pics rule is about the only rule they have...and that's just to keep someone from not posting updates and then faking the finish photo.

As far as the Chaco goes...my seeds came from John (Pr0digal_son) and he's another wild guru...maybe just two different variants...there'll be no shortage of update photos from me on all of them...really excited about them all.

Hardening time here too! Can't wait to get them off the shelf and in the dirt. I need to go get some compost!

Plants are looking great Shane! Amazing "small" grow.
Good luck with your hardening brotha! The grow is small by my standards for sure...and tiny compared to most on here.

I shouldn't need too much room in the freezer this season...and I am slowly working my way through last years pods. I am a ways out from any harvests, and with the Jals and Green Chiles gifting them to folks and using a bunch should handle it. I will try to stockpile some roasted and peeled chiles for next winter. The wilds all have tiny pods that I can just throw in a bowl on the counter to dry...so no worries! No danger of pots lining the pool this year...that isn't a boundary I am going to test...breaking a little new ground on the other hand........

Thanks Jeff...I have been trying to step my photo game up the past couple seasons, but the masters like John (Pr0digal_son) and Greg (Pic1) continue to amaze me with their skills. John posted some closeups the other day that made me feel like an ant in a forrest of pepper fuzz.

I like the alphanumeric names! No fuzz or frills...just a number and a few letters as reference.

Thank you Scott! You da poo! Mama says the plants are still kicking outside under the latticework porch...I will try to give them a few hours of direct light on Friday and cycle them in and out on Saturday if I can (we also have a flag football game for my son and a college tour with my oldest daughter) and they'll go in the ground on Sunday if the forecast still looks good.

Brotha Jamie Said :Don't ever trust the 10 day forecast. 10 out of 9 times they are usually wrong . And I only counted 9 pictures
Haha...you made me go back and count...TWICE!!! There are 10! I know all about trusting the weather man...especially out here Southern Ca where 350 days of the year you can predict Warm with morning clouds clearing by noon with low temps in the high 40s to low 50s and be right about 350 days of the year. The highs vary a bit more, but in the winter they predict 70, summer 90 and spring and fall they just guess...

I will be short of 10 this time...I only got 5 plants here in the Barracks!
B5iOVo7.jpg

Here is my little setup in my room...and they're loving it. They smaller ones are getting a little leggy trying to compete with the Bubblegum and Jalafuego which are showing their dominance...so I added the small fan. I actually grabbed two of them at wally world the other day and they are just the ticket! I may actually buy a few more to hit the grow shelf from different angles back at the house.  They seem to be getting plenty of light (usually much closer to the tops just move up for the pic).

AblAshG.jpg

Here is the top down group shot...

lcHsHdH.jpg

The Joe E. Parker is the smallest of the bunch...

Lt8KBBE.jpg

Followed by the Mucho Nacho but they're both gaining ground...I think once they occupy a little more of the canopy of the group they'll beef up a bit....

pbm722L.jpg

Next is the Big Jim which is really gaining some steam...

rGIkmqA.jpg

This is the Jalafuego...which is actually the tallest plant here. It's stem is nice and sturdy too. The smaller ones are still struggling to stay upright with the fan on them...I so have to move it or rotate the plants to give them a break.

aXMWglG.jpg

The big daddy is the Bubblegum 7 pot...

BpIrpyK.jpg

and the top down shot...growth tips everywhere, its going to be a shrub.

Well maybe I can still squeeze out 10 gonna go snap a couple more pics...
1wkViby.jpg

Lookie lookie...most nodes on the BBG are starting to bud up.  :woohoo:

cWCbrvu.jpg

Oh...and how 'bout the Jalafuego not to be out done!!! First fork and buds forming! I imagine by next week's update they'll all be following suit!

Oh...and an update on the Aphid situation up here. None to be found!!! The first treatment last monday was effective, but I found a few survivors. That time I dunked each plant in a sink full of very soapy water but I only let them sit for about a minute while I refilled the sink with clean water and then rinse them off for fear of burning the plants. I used a paper towel stuffed around the base of the plant to prevent dumping out the soil. The second treatment everything the same...but I let them sit for a full 15 minutes with the soap on before rinsing...no more aphids. Rest in pieces you little @#%^^'s!!!

I also had a mild case of fungus gnats which hitched a ride with the BBG plant that spent most of the winter outside...for them I top dressed each container with coffee grounds...no more gnats either!!!

On a last side note...My first look at my potential next set of orders is tomorrow. I have enjoyed my shore duty, but it's time to go back to sea! If available I will be choosing orders to Bahrain for a year...unaccompanied. :mope: Which will give me choice of orders leaving there...which I hope will be back in San Diego...to RETIRE!!!  So close but still so far away...gonna be one helluva party!!! Fingers crossed I get what I am looking for y'all!!!

Hope your weeks are moving quickly toward the weekend!
Shane
