Stefan_W's Great Big Beefy Pepper Adventure: Grow List

Looks great, Stefan. Do you have any measurements for that sauce? Wanna try it myself since I still got a lot of pods left in the freezer, it's time to make some sauce

I didn't measure, but you can see the main ingredients in the photo. The garlic from the garden is huge, and it has a very strong flavour. The booze and vinegar are about a cup each. Thanks for taking a look, and yes it is definitely sauce making time!

Looks awesome, man. Great idea on the strawberries!

Thank you very much! The strawberries definitely added some extra freshness to it.

For one thing, I didn't put anything red in the sauce... just mangoes, orange habs, sweet white onion, ginger, dried spices (including turmeric), honey, cider vinegar and sherry. The fresh orange habs were plenty bright in color. I got the mangoes at the supermarket when they were still hard. I had to soften them in a paper bag on the windowsill. Even then they were more yellow than the orange-salmon color of tree ripened fruit, and lastly the turmeric powder... turmeric is what makes yellow mustard that particular shade of yellow, so that's the biggest culprit I suspect.

It totally makes sense when I think of it. I am going to try adding some tumeric next time I make some sauce and see how it goes. The only pods I have on hand are red, but I have plenty of powders to work with. Thanks for the tip!

My wife got into the act this afternoon and decided to make the candied almonds she always makes during the holidays, only this time she made a batch with each of the powders I bought recently. The Smoked Fire turned out awesome! It was kind of funny, because she really wanted to bring on the heat and was disappointed in the batches where she did not add enough powder. I think this is going to become a new holiday staple for us.

The best part? When she was done I got to eat the leftovers off of the wooden spoon. This was NOT like the stuff I licked off of spoons when I was a kid!

LOL at Stickman! Too funny.

Those hot candied almonds look like the shiznit. Purely awesome.

They really were all really tasty. We found that you really have to up the heat level for it to register once they are cadied. Next time she'll have to use 1.5 or 2 times the amount of powder she used this time around. The only ones that were really hot this time around were the ones with the trinidad scorpion/maruga mix. So if you ever decide to make this, be sure to use double the powder that you think you need!

I have a quick question for my friends and people passing through. I was going through my grow list for next year and I came to the conclusion that I need more yellow. The only yellow I have so far are aji lemon drops. The heat level is not a factor because I have a great selection of hot and superhots already, so I am going by flavour alone.

The options I have in mind are yellow brain strain and yellow bhut. Which one would you pick? Feel free to add in a different variety of yellow pepper if you want.

Just a note, I don't like the flavour of fataliis so don't suggest that one or anything that has a similar flavour.

I asked the same question earlier this year, and the unanimous consensus was yellow Trinidad Scorpion or TS 7-pot yellow. I've also heard good things of the yellow-orange Aji Criolla Sella, and it has the advantage of doing well in relatively cool growing temperatures. I'll be growing both next season.

Yellow Brains. Very hot, but not as hot as the red variety. Very tasty, but not like a Fatalii. Any yellow 7 would probably be similar, but the Brains look cool. ;)

id go for yellow BS......hope the biker billys i sent you comes thru

Yeah, I'm hoping they make it through too! Canada Post can be pretty slow, especially at this time of year.

Thanks, this got me thinking that maybe I should go for the yellow Trinidad Scorpion.

And this got me thinking about the yellow 7s again. I could go with the yellow 7 pod gigantic and replace the red 7 pod gigantic already on my list. That would open up a slot for something else, which is really handy.

I went through my seeds, and I already have the yellow 7 pod so that is what I am going to run with. I also have a yellow brain in case I change my mind. If I had to be honest, I will probably change my mind a few times before seed planting time.

Thanks for all of your help!

Stefan I am kinda late to voice my opinion, but people have added some great varieties to chose from. It depends what your looking for especially since you said any heat, but I would go with the TS yellow from the ones I have tasted. I grew the 7 pod yellow an amazing and productive plant, which variety are you growing 7 pod yellow or 7 pod yellow XL. There are so many yellow that I constantly has me adding varieties. Good luck with your decision and your grow

Entertaining glog !

Hope your daughters ok. One of my sons has severe autism, you love them all the same.

I have the seed collecting problem too. Pepperlover has some great stuff and she gives good freebies. Just finished sowing for this year and I have about 90 varieties growing. About half of what I have in stock. I could grow as many types next year and have completely different varieties without buying anymore.... of course that's not what will happen ;)

Thanks for the input Fernando! I have yellow 7 pod gigantic and others already, but after reading your reply and others as well I am thinking of ordering and growing the yellow TS instead of the red. I have no shortage of superhots, so if I can up the flavour a bit I think it is worth doing. Thanks a lot for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

Thank you very much! Yes, we always love them just the same even when they have challenges in life. The hardest part about brain tumours is that it completely changes them. I had my daughter for 6 years, and then when the tumour effects took over it was like I had a stranger in my house. The love was still there, but I had to adapt. But when I finally adapted she had the other trauma in mid August that caused her personality to change again and it was like having a stranger in my house again. Over the last year I have had the old Sofia, the new Sofia, and now the new new Sofia, and it is emotionally brutal. But then things like the school shooting happen and it reminds me that at least I get to kiss her each night before bed and tell her I love her over and over every day, which is something many parents would give anything to have.

Wow, your garden is amazing. I'm glad you found your way over here, because it helped me to find your glog!
