Stetto's First Winter Grow ('16-'17)

Well, here we gro, October 14 and the setup has begun.

My heat mat is unregulated, no thermostat, but measures (without sunlight) @ 87.5F. As can be seen, the 20+ inch deep mat is folded up at the window sill, which should help in deflecting any winter chill getting through the glass. This window will one day be a garden window extending around 9 inches out from the house, to facilitate all manner of horticultural misdeeds...But that's another story...

The lil' ziplock box in the photo is the start of my winter experiment, some Trinidad Moruga Scorpion seed obtained through the good graces of Jeff Contonio. My other seed is in transit from Australia:

Aji Amarillo

Jalapeno Tormenta

Bert the Chilli

I've been trying to grow Aji Amarillo for some years but have never been able to get seed to germinate. I've blamed the seed (innocuous Amazon purchases) up till now, but I have a lot more faith this time around since finding a reputable vendor. Note that only one superhot is being planted----For now.

After germination I intend on sowing into Solo cups (I've heard a wive's tale that you use the red ones for more than just the song), and eventually into 1.5 gallon pots. Even though I brag about the growing strength of the local soil (primordial ooze), I think I'll either hybrid it with non-soil potting mix or not use dirt from the garden at all.

I expect to do quite a bit of pruning, hopefully to encourage bushyness and to promote production in smaller accomodations. I'm sure I can find plety of input on that subject in these pages...

This is my first inside grow, let's see what happens. Any advice/pointers/warnings/pokes/prods/words of encouragement are welcome....But ya doesn't has to call me Johnson....

Hey Greg,

In the same boat here with if it's alive around here it will sting, bite, or stick you.

This one was rather upset, or should I say pissed back in October. That's the step outside the back door I had just come out of a few minutes before. I played "Queen of Hearts" on this one.

I'm a hard core tree snake hugger.  I caught one for the neighbors a while back and relocated the fellow to the desert outside town.  Relocation is hard on them, but many do survive.

About the only critter that worries me are the Giant Freaking Spider Wasps from Hell.  If one of them got inside the car, I think I'd immediately 'EJECT!,' and it would make little difference if I was was driving 7 or 70 MPH !  :)

I'll have to share the tale of getting rattlesnake bit back in 2002. It's amazing how cruel hospital staff can be in some cases....

This ought to be good!   :D

(Was alcohol involved?  Rattlesnakes just HATE alcohol and testosterone! ;) )

I've got some aji pacay seeds in a soak, anticipating a L-o-o-o-o-o-ng season for them, and since the nerd de la geo has sent me another mess of seeds, my grow list is going to be re-evaluated yet again.

And my little "accidental" aji mango should be producing right after dirt day...

I think I'll save the rattlesnake story for another time, and yes, alcohol may have been involved....

I've saved 3 this last year, and another 2 weeks ago, that the dogs were after, as I know their roll in the scheme of things. But this last one, so close to the house had 3 dogs I was trying to keep from getting bitten, and of course myself.

Well hell, I know you guys recommend that flowering shouldn't be allowed, but I couldn't heppit. These are the experimental sun-exposed plants, and all are doing this virtually simultaneously...

It was so mesmerizing to watch. They practically open before your eyes.

Same flower a half hour later.

Pretty-pretty! And no, I have no delusions that these will pod up, if one does I'd like to see how it develops in the short-day sun of the subarctic....

Very nice Baccatum flower! I had an OW Black Naga pod up inside just in the windowsill. I hope it sets!

Thanks Adam, I'm trying my hand at hand pollination, using a Q-tip and a pulsing breath from a foot or two away. They're getting sunlight, about 10 hrs/day this time of year.

It just might set fruit....
Pods by April?   ;)

Let's hope, Greg! There are 6 total flower buds opening, and when I go back to my original post I kinda basically let it be known that part of my early planting was to see if I could get fruit from an indoor grow.

And if aphids attack, I have a guard dog...

Hey Eric, don't worry about the plant you cut back, once it
get's going again, it will grow like gangbusters.  In the past,
I've had a few get topped for one reason or another, and be
just as tall as their siblings, but much bushier.  Usually they
won't be as tall, but it can happen.

Also, your flowering plant will produce a pod when it is ready
and 'knows' it has the resources to carry it off.  In the indoor
period of my grow, most of the flowers just drop off, but last
year, I did have a Scorpion pod and some Padron pods before
May plantout!

I'm getting ready to start the rest of my chiles this week, if the flippin' medico's will quit calling for blood samples and random guinea pigging tests...

In the meantime I was advised to plant some aji pacay seeds as soon as I got them, as they apparently take their sweet time producing.

I proudly announce hook #1...
