Stetto's First Winter Grow ('16-'17)

Well, here we gro, October 14 and the setup has begun.

My heat mat is unregulated, no thermostat, but measures (without sunlight) @ 87.5F. As can be seen, the 20+ inch deep mat is folded up at the window sill, which should help in deflecting any winter chill getting through the glass. This window will one day be a garden window extending around 9 inches out from the house, to facilitate all manner of horticultural misdeeds...But that's another story...

The lil' ziplock box in the photo is the start of my winter experiment, some Trinidad Moruga Scorpion seed obtained through the good graces of Jeff Contonio. My other seed is in transit from Australia:

Aji Amarillo

Jalapeno Tormenta

Bert the Chilli

I've been trying to grow Aji Amarillo for some years but have never been able to get seed to germinate. I've blamed the seed (innocuous Amazon purchases) up till now, but I have a lot more faith this time around since finding a reputable vendor. Note that only one superhot is being planted----For now.

After germination I intend on sowing into Solo cups (I've heard a wive's tale that you use the red ones for more than just the song), and eventually into 1.5 gallon pots. Even though I brag about the growing strength of the local soil (primordial ooze), I think I'll either hybrid it with non-soil potting mix or not use dirt from the garden at all.

I expect to do quite a bit of pruning, hopefully to encourage bushyness and to promote production in smaller accomodations. I'm sure I can find plety of input on that subject in these pages...

This is my first inside grow, let's see what happens. Any advice/pointers/warnings/pokes/prods/words of encouragement are welcome....But ya doesn't has to call me Johnson....

did i miss a post somewhere? i didnt see what happened to that mutant looking seedling... then again, im just now having my tea so still half asleep...

That depends on which mutant you mean... ;)

I found yet another aji Amarillo this morning that had been topped and has decided to spend it's energy flowering. Is it light quality or duration changes that trigger this? Nutrient inconsistencies? I know you guys say to cull the flowers til dirt day, but I'm pro-life....

Virtually all my plants, with the exception of most of the PaulG Peruvians, have purple veining in all but the newest growth. I have GOT to get a soil test kit...

I was thinking this one...

As for why they are flowering, most peppers are not effected by hours of light unless its an extreme lack there of which can cause death... they are not like most marijuana that will fruit based on light cycles... peppers will flower for 2 reasons, extremely happy, or detection of end of life possibilities... ie, lack of light to the point of death, or most common in containers, realizing its out of space... once a plant knows it has no place left to grow, it knows its time to reproduce... no point in continuing to grow up or out as it wont have the root space to support anymore foliage... time to fruit cause if thats all the space it has, its time to reproduce or lose its gentic code forever...

probably the main thing with peppers though is that they have an age where they are mature... if its not a imminent death call, its simply a teenager with crazy hormones sexxing itself up...

im just learning the non superhots so i dont know the maturity age of your aji's, so it would either the small container signaling time to fruit, or its just old enough to do so...

Flowering is just a sign that the plants are happy and healthy.  Tweaking the nutes to promote or retard flowering doesn't seem nearly as effective as with 'other' popular grow-room crops.

I like to pinch some of the buds, and leave some to fruit.  While this may (?) retard the plant's growth to some degree, I do get early pods to munch... :)

And given that Amarillos take freaking forever to ripen, I'd suggest you let some get started.

I am sorry to report that I clipped that one and replanted it with this one.

Still a PaulG seed, but from a different lot; this one is not F5, rather a Peruvian immigrant.

But hey, my Trinidad Moruga Scorps have weathered their spotting issues and beginning to like me again!!

Nevermind the leaves on the bottom, that's old growth I haven't plucked yet.

Hey.  I was looking into Bat Crap and found a quite reasonable price on the stuff.  5 pounds would get you well into the season, and the stuff is lighting-in-a-bottle for the plants.  It has lots of N, 'enough' P and K, and gobs of micro-nutes that many other fertilizers don't.
If you're still fretting over fert issues, you could, IMO, do far worse than spending ~$30 on a bucket of this:

All this bat poop talk makes me want to visit a spot we found 32 years ago. A hole in the ground, a low spot with small mountains all around. A natural drain. Down the hole is a cave structure, just loaded with bat guano. It feels like you're walking on a sponge down there...

The support I'm getting here is making the entire endeavor!
Wow, just Wow!

I stress out for space when I start seed at the beginning of March and you started this thread in October, in Minnesota?  Wow!  Great job, healthy looking plants.  I would have to top them all to 12" and give a good trim at this point or I would not be able to keep them until plant out time.  My plant out date for peppers is usually the 1st week of June, sometimes mid-June and 12 weeks of container life just stresses me to the max, good job!

Eeesh!  That is kinda gross..

A friend of mine (who turned me on to my first aji Amarillo) in Mesa AZ used to tell of guano hunts up in the caves of the Superstition Mts. I thought, good luck with that. Rattlesnakes are thick as turds in a litter box out there...

Aw Greg, yer gonna be Unca!

This was just "tossed in" to a unproductive pellet on Feb 1, the root coming up backwards (uh-huh... :drunk: ), so I went ahead and sunk him an 8th inch or so to right himself.

Didn't come out of the pack you sent either, just plucked a seed from one of the pods.

Ain't backwoods farmin' the best?!?

Hey, if it don't bite, stab, sting, poke, impale, perforate, or otherwise attempt to kill you, it don't live in the desert!   :)
Most of the critters around here are not exactly the warm cuddly type.

That said, this fellow was amazingly mellow.  I was about 2 feet away and probably could have picked him up without issue if I'd wanted.

A couple of my Scorpions did the same thing, Eric.
the new growth seems to be looking better.

Looks like you are having a good time, brother!

Inspired by Dennish: an "experiment"...

and after

Kindly note that I said inspired by, and my mama din't raise no foo....I left a couple "parachute" leaves at the top. If and when I see development to my satisfaction I'll take him Full Monty.

This is also not an aji lemon drop. I have but one of those. 13 aji amarillos give me plenty of confidence to try this...

Besides, the nodes are already popping pretty well.

Oh, what fun!  An Ex-per-i-ment!

Why did I instantly think of this dude?   ;)

:(  Those big, beautiful, wildly photosynthetic monster leaves will cost the plant a LOT of resources to replace.  Hey, at least you left a few...  ;)

We will see....

If it doesn't survive, I'll only have 12 left! What will I do......
