smokers THE AUSSIE BUILD A UGLY DRUM SMOKER SMACK DOWN! MOYBOYvsCHILLIMAN!

Good one boutros! But he may be sleeping in it.

I think the shipping would be outrageous though. Especially if the postal service comes to pick up the drum with Moyboy still inside!

Cost of 55 gallon drum. $50
Cost of UDS parts. $30
Shipping cost from Australia. $350
The look on moyboy's face as he sees the UDS assembled in one day by boutros. Pricless.

Just write "for Boutros in San Diego" on er, seal it up, and put her out to sea!

Seriously though- I'm the same way with some DIY stuff Moyboy... I'm already considering an IDS of my own!

A IDS is the best type....not hassle and no mess to clean up.....and it gives every other bugger around here hours of laughs having a go at you about it....:D

This has become like a soap opera. I have to tune in once in a while, just to see that the same story is going on. C'mon Moyboy! You can do it!!!!

moyboy's Passions are UDS smokers but he must live in Another World, because As The World Turns he knows that he will end up in the General Hospital if he tries to make a UDS like they do in Dallas.

Booo. Nova get the meter out for that one. Sorry THP too cliche. C'mon Moyboy, as the great Larry the Cable Guy would say: Git 'R Done!!!

Yes I know the cable guy.....and yes I plan to Git 'R done...

I need to get it done so THP can change his avatar and signature....

I just had a though.....

Not sure if it would work but I can't see why not....

I have a drum with a removable lid and a clamp seal, so I could use that as my base and cut the fixed end out as I am planning on welding the lip of the webber base to the top of the drum so a webber lid sits on top and seals well.....

This way, when I want to clean out the ash I can simple undo the clamp and lift the drum off the base giving simple access to the ash and the basket......also this takes away the need for an ash tray........

I'll wait and see what Bams thinks of the idea.....I'm sure there is a reason why more people don't do it....:)

Good idea on the base Moyboy! Damn good idea! I'm still kinda kinda wanting a door though if I did one. Just in case. I always tend to underestimate the amounts of charcoal I should use and like the idea of being able to have side access while its goin.

very good idea, have seen a couple done this exact way

the reason most people dont do it is, that if you can find a drum that already has a lid, there is no need to do any drilling for exhaust and the flat lids generally give u a better seal than the weber lids

the advantage of the weber lid is that u get a second rack out of the deal.

i highly recommend not building it with a door in the side. u can seal for leaks but the idea is to have a convection oven sort of deal. you are never going to get the door to fit perfectly.

here is an idea for everybody questioning different kinds of builds. use the KISS(keep it simple stupid) theory. build one the regular way. play with it until you get to know it. then build another one and do your modifications.

why mess with a proven way of building something?

you also dont want to keep opening the lid or door on a UDS because you either get heat spikes or you get heat loss. if you build the charcoal basket the way as shown, you can put approx. 10lbs of charcoal in it. the average cook will not take anywhere close to that, trust me on this. i filled my charcoal half full of wood, lump and briquettes the other day, cooked for 6 hours and tomorrow i will take pix to see how much is left
