I was checking on my garden at night for pest when I saw this crawling on my shoe. Coulda been a bad bite

I saw a fly disguised as a bee, but the camera startup sound spooked him.

Pretty Scarlet King. If I saw the color combo in my periferal vision, it would definitely startle me for a second. No "red next to yellow" though, and no black head. Safe.Geonerd said:Back to the critters!
Spotted yesterday in Bonita Canyon, Chiricahua National Park, Az.
The snake was kinda wired (as Kingsnakes tend to be, it seems), and I gotta say, the (mostly) black head had me going for a few moments until I remembered that the Sonoran Coral 'never' gets remotely this large.

We were hoping to spot some of Chiricahua's exotic vipers, the Twin Spotted or Rock Rattlesnakes. Unfortunately, none were encountered.

It looks like the Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake, alright. Looked up the two rattlers - both are really beautiful snakes. Too bad you didn't spot any. Been to Chiricahua a couple of times but never with enough time to really explore. Hope to some day, though.Geonerd said:

Duuuuuuuude so yea always on the look out now since I saw this thread. Even before I would always take pics of odd insects. As a kid I caught nearly every kind there was in the state of texas. In high school I would mount them in resin and make key chains and necklaces, but today!....... Oh man today I found the largest bug I've ever seen in texas in person. In all the years of being on the look out for bugs I've never seen one of these.
First a cool pic I was going to post I took of this mantis and a fly.
Then this Cottonwood Borer Longhorn Beetle showed up at my house today. Did the research and found out it is one of the largest insects in North america. Really friendly and doesn't make a horibble smell when handled!! Lol

I ran into this guy when I was out picking berries today. I turned the branch over to get a shot of him. But the way he's holding those two legs is the perfect camouflage for him when he's on the underside of a twig. Those two legs look just like a leaf petiole or axil. Pretty neat trick.
Here he is just chillin' I see these guys all the time, just never seen one try to hide like that. They're almost impossible to see if you're not looking for them.
