TheGreenChileMonster's 2016 Grow

Well, I finally decided to start a Glog.  I have quite a few plants that ore OW from last year, and some new ones that I started this January.  Here is the list, lots of pics to follow, I'm still in the process of planting out.  Most everything is going into root pouches, and pots, but I do have 9 total rocoto plants in the ground as well.

Definitely glad to see another Virginia grower on the forum for sure! I would imagine that you will probably have a longer growing season than I will by a week or two. NOVA got absolutely drenched last night, at least the flooding wasn't too bad. There are a lot of holes in the leaves of all of my plants, and some leaves are torn off, or in half, but from what I can tell I didn't lose any plants completely. I'll double check this evening when I get off of work. I'm sure they'll bounce right back stronger than ever though. Good luck on your grow there Vicious Vex!

Yeah that is generally the case, unfortunately this year we had a frost in April! and two soft frosts since then.    I am on the edge of that rain band that has been hammering you.  I'm very lucky that I have a well drained medium to grow in this year.  Even so, I am seeing yellowing in leaves from the constant rain.  I'm put the plants on grates and have a fan blowing on them to help with evaporation.

Well...this Glog may end up turning into a eulogy for my plants. Hopefully not, but they are getting DP'd with spider mites, and these little green fockers. I've never had an issue with bugs in my years of gardening, but I guess this season is my time. I've resorted to completely topping the worst effected plants, and pruning/defoliating the others. The neem oil didn't do anything at all, in fact the spider mite population seems to have increased after using it, lol! I've been using the BA Natria mite control, which is actually working. I of course won't give up, and it's still early enough in the season for me to get plenty of pods, but is definiteltya huge PITA, especially since the plants were perfectly healthy, til I began hardening them off outside next to a mite ridden chocolate bhutlah. Damn that chocolate bhutlah! JK, It's not the plants fault it's mine, for not noticing the signs of mite damage sooner. Oh well, I'm sure everything will work out well for my crop.

Attached are pics of the jerks attacking my plants. Also, the only thing I could do today, to save these 3 plants.

Try growing eggplants next to them, their supposed to be good companion plants to help peppers. I know locally in the greenhouses they have been used to deal with pests.
Too bad about your peppers :(

Thanks man, I will try that! Thankfully two of the varieties I grow and eat the most are still growing well, the Aji Amarillo and Aji Limo. My 5 Ecuadorian sweet rocoto that are in the ground got hit hard, but after treating and defoliating, are beginning to put out a ton of new shoots. My 4 in the ground Peru Bitdumi may not recover, however. The Peru Bitdumi aside from the mite damage, have also not taken 3 weeks of rain almost every day too well either. Maybe the plants were stressed from too much rain, and became more vulnerable to the mites. I still have hope though, because there still are a couple of nodes of new green growth per plant.
 
I figure I should post something positive, since my past couple of posts haven't been... so here is a pic of a couple of my aji amarillo, putting off some fat pods already. I can't wait til the sun finally comes out this summer, so these plants can get huge! It has rained every day since the 26th of April, setting an all time record for consecutive days of rain in the DC/Northern VA area. We finally should get a break in the rain on Sunday and Monday, but then It's supposed to rain for another week in a row.

My mini rocoto is about to flower, I can see the purple ring on the middle of the buds. Most of my rocoto plants are starting to recover well from the mites. I did lose a few plants though. The mites are still attacking,but now that the weather is better,the natural mite predators are starting to do their job.

I started my Bitdumi last fall, with the intention of planting them outside this year. I won't have pods for a few months. This is my first time growing the Bitdumi. Thankfully, all 4 of my Bitdumi plants are now exploding with growth, after getting nearly killed by mites.

My Bitdumi started last fall  just started to flower .
 
I haven't posted an update in a while,so here are a couple of pics. I lost some plants to mites, but the rest are doing very well. I plan on doing a full update as soon as I can figure out how to post pictures taken in portrait mode from my Galaxy S7 so that they don't show up sideways. Any tips in that respect would be helpful.

These aji Largo and Rocoto Rojo Arequipeño are starting to flower now.

Plants looking good Dale. I don't know about the Galaxy, but my iPhone will post them sideways, unless I turn the phone sideways. Like this. Beautiful flowers.
