Trent's 2015 Grow Log (potting soil probs solved!)

Well, off to an early start this year.

I'm planting left over seeds from last year, to start, so I'm putting them in a little early just in case some don't pop.

Sorting last year's stash I kept tucked away from Pepperlover

And the first tray of 2015

C3rSEmUh.png

I didn't plant any Nagas this year. Probably won't. Not doing reapers again, have plenty of heat in the brown morugas, brain strains, and barrackpores.

The next tray I do will be the rest of the non-annuums in a couple weeks, plus a replant of anything that hasn't popped by then.

Shooting for about 80 plants in the ground this year.

One full row of annuums, 5 jalapeno plants, 10 cayenne plants (never seem to grow enough of that!). 15

4 1/2 rows of Chinense, 10 per row. 45

1 1/2 rows of mixed pube/fructs/baccatum 15

Rock Garden did surprisingly well last year - so another dozen in there. GREAT big plants in the shade, not a lot of pods, though, and they took their damn sweet time ripening in the shade. So I'll probably put more annuums up there than I did last year (faster growing cycle) 12

Will reuse the 30x 5 gallon cloth pots one more time.. those did pretty good! Smaller plants, smaller pods, but they were all tasty. :)  30

Which brings the total planned grow to 117 peppers.

Fewer than last year, but I'm saving some room to grow some watermelons this year, or die trying!

(Cutting out one full row of peppers; moving the beans up, to clear room for melons.)

Anyway, here's to 2015!

Nice artwork, Trent!

How's the CGN22091 doing?  Sometimes when I get one that looks a
little weird I spray some cal=mag on it and it perks up.
Not always, but sometimes.

Thanks!

That CGN22091 has started greening up a bit. The tips of those first true leaves are still white, but the bodies have filled in green as it's grown. New leaves are coming in green, too.

Don't know why it freaked out like that when all of the others didn't.

It was definitely 100% starved of something; could have been nute locked from something in the starter peat, or maybe got a super dose of something from the potting soil when it was transplanted. (I can't remember now, if it started turning white before or after transplant.. I *think* it was immediately after)

Good to hear it's coming around.  Sometimes I guess they
just sort of catch a cold and have to get over it!

Some pics, it's been a week. Trying to pick the same plants mostly, to track their growth.

Yeah they're turning out pretty good.

Got 110 healthy pepper plants right now.

Thinking about putting another 20 or so annuums in the dirt tomorrow. They grow fast enough.. got time.

Only 110 this year.  You need to double that.  If mine all go well with no more losses going to have probably 100 spares to find homes for.  I tried not to start too many extras, but ended up doing so anyway.

The little 22091def looks better, Trent.

All the plants look great.  Can see you've
taken good care of them!

Looking good, Bolsa de dulce is one my largest plants atm. Now that I fixed the PH issue it's exploding... mostly up.

I had 4 white 7 pots pop out the dirt white/yellow as can be. They never did improve or grow more than the first true leaves. I had one out of all them that was green and actually grew so I just tossed the rest yesterday.

You're welcome to come shoot some of my rabbits. Fencing , dogs and my bb gun arent doing the trick. Mostly because the bbgun doesn't shoot the same direction twice.

Nice sea of green you have growing there, best of luck this season

Thanks! So far, so good. But still a lot can happen between now and harvest. :)

Yeah I'm saving room for some watermelons and sweet corn this year. :)

Well, I took care of them when transplanting, and I give them a couple tablespoons of water each week.

Other than that I just kind of leave them alone so they can do their thing!

That CGN 19198 is my tallest, by far. It's over 2x as high as any other pepper. Going to need to stake the damn thing soon.

(Need to get the reciprocating fan on them for a few hours each day, too!)

Trent, you def have some latent talent, brother.

No wonder your peppers look so good!

You're painting them     :shh:

Your secret is safe with me      :silenced:

Well, one week watering intervals are a bit too long.

I had one pepper plant die, a miniscule Amish Bush. :(

The roots weren't deep enough for the plant to survive the soil drying that much.

All of the other plants are doing fine. Will do some more pics tomorrow.

Well it's definitive.

That saturated bag of potting soil "cooked" the slow release fertilizers. I've got nute problems on my first two trays.

7eaeO9Qh.jpg

The trays on the far left were planted *first* and are 2 weeks older than the big bushy plants on the right.

The later transplants look perfect.

zgIMlUOh.jpg

The earlier two trays of transplants... not so much.

They're stunted a little but I think they'll pull through OK.

2in32XJh.jpg

^ that little dude is still 2x as tall as everything else. :)

Well, I don't think it's fertilizer BURN.. I think that the slow release fertilizer was fully released (dissolved) on that old soil, and then washed out on my first couple of waterings. That would explain why the plants initially showed signs of nitrogen burn (one showed SEVERE nitrogen burn), but then they cleared up, then went the opposite direction and went pale and twisted!

The symptoms of a stunted pale plant with twisted gnarly leaves that curl up along the fringes point to potassium, phosphorous, and nitrogen deficiencies.

I'm going to test the soil from one of the pots, with my kit tomorrow, then figure out if I need to fertilize. I'm going to have to repot two plants to get enough soil for the test - I don't want to use what's left in that bag, as it'd give me a false reading, I need to see what is actually IN the pots as they sit (having been watered for 3 weeks... it could be drastically different)

If the soil shows deficient in all of the NPK tests, the fix is quick and easy - fertilize the little shits!

I'll also get to see what the roots look like. I'd suspect strong root development if they had high NPK initially; if so, they should perk up real fast.
