Trippas Organic story of 2012/2013....things could be worse ...

So far my season has gone like this ... goood ... average ... great ... bad .... things are on the up ... and today .... pretty f&^%king annoyed and frustrated ....so many pests ... and the plants are looking much worse then this time last season (when I had no pests to speak of). I had aphids early on during winter ... they were easy to clear off and didn't bother me too much ...

but I have since been having major issues with thrips and broadmites?? (some sort of mite anyway) tiny little buggers which are about the size of a spec of flour (smaller then two spotted or spider mites). So My plants lurch from looking good to looking really terrible and then they bounce back for a while only to be hammered all over again.

Anyway through all of this I am getting some pods to eat so that is a bonus I suppose.

My grow list is as follows

7 pod/pot "Primo" (Junglerain)
Cili Goronong (Junglerain)
Jalapeno "HTM" (Sourced myself)
Prik Luang (Junglerain)
Fatalii (Pepperlover)
Trinidad Seasoning (Pepperlover)
Kerinting (Pepperlover)
Kerinting (Accidental Hybrid Unknown??) (Pepperlover)
2 x Mystery Superhots (1 maybe Trnindad Scorpion "Sunrise"? From Jungle Rain)
Chocolate Bhut (Bonchi)(THSC)
Yellow 7 pot/pod (THSC)
Super Chilli (THSC)
Explosive Ember (THSC)
Trinidad Scorpion Morouga Blend (Junglerain)
Scotch Bonnet TFM (Bonchi)(Junglerain)
Pimenta De Neyde (Soon to be Bonchi)(Junglerain)
Bhut Jolokia 'Assam' (Junglerain)
Bahamian Goat Pepper (Junglerain)
Habanero Chocolate (Bonchi)(Junglerain)
NTR's (THSC)
Douglah 'Alphanerdz strain' (THSC)
Wild Brazil (Pepperlover)
Birdseye HTM (Sourced myself)
Serrano (THSC)
7 Pot (Large) (Pepperlover)
Naga Morich (Pepperlover)
Bonda Ma Jacques (Original seed from THSC but this seed from saved pods from last season)

All of them are strictly organically grown in soil in containers in the limited space of my apartment balcony ...

I am not much of a wordsmith so I usually like to post plenty of pictures of pods (if I have any in the coming months!!) so come and enjoy/share the frustrations of growing in the most pest ridden area in the world :D ... I will post a few photos I shot today later this evening ...

Also thought I would link to my old glog as well just for posterity and self indulgence :) ;) :D

Well Just finished potting up my bigger plants and they are now getting absolutely battered by a huge storm ... they should pull through all right I hope but it is windy lightning and absolutely teeming down ...eye candy will have to wait ... lightning is getting mighty close!

The bonus is how cool it is after is passes, its been so stinking hot today & the humidity was a nightmare, your going to sleep nice tonight bro, trust me.

Mezo.

Mezo.

Yeah for sure and the fridge is stocked with plenty of food and Guinness so no worries there either. Might be a good night to venture out and watch the new Hobbit movie too ... unless I start drinking ;)

Yep you drew the short straw this time Trips, i see Gassy got a little, i got nothing at all for a change & i see its still going heavy on top of you now, thought it would just pass out to sea but it seems to be hanging over you.

Mezo.

WInds have dropped at least .... but still bucketing down and plenty of lightning around ... don't think I have sustained any damage at least (that I can see at the moment) and the plants needed a good drenching after the pot ups anyway!!

So after and before the storms I have given my plants a late Christmas Present of bigger pots (including a new soil mix through lack of supply of my usual potting mix) and a feed of gogo juice, Searles 5in1 liquid and Fulvic and Kelp. (NTS Stimulate)

I also gave them a mulch of Screened Pine Bark to increase the soil acidity and keep the roots cooler and lessen the watering requirements.

My new soil mix consisted of 45-50% Brunnings cheap ass potting mix (which as gas eluded to earlier is pretty much wood chips with some composed material but it certainly is light and drains well) 10%-15% Searles 5 in 1 Organic Plant Food (Solid) and 40% Sweet Garden SOil Fix (which is an organic compost made from Sugar Cane Mulch)

Into that I also added some Organic Link Slow Release fertiliser to the bottom and top of the pots (I am a little worried some of the potting mix could be a nitrogen hog as it breaks down as the wood seemed quite chippy and uncomposted at times hence the higher nitrogen inputs)

Hey, Trippa, we had a conversation a while back about Wild Brazil peppers, and
that yours and mine looked different. I serched out this thread from a few years back:
http://thehotpepper....praetermissium/

It would appear that the seeds I sent you are the cumari verdadeira Praetermissum
variety - elongated red pods. It is also referred to as Cumari Pollux. The Yellow round
pods are called the cumari do para, which is a c. chinense variety.

Nice investigative work Paul g Holmes!! ;) so that is quite a big difference then ... completely different sub species. Thanks Paul. I will make sure you get some of the chinense variety soon

That would be super, bro! Another source listed it as a c. baccatum var. praetermissum. You choose!

Paul, Tripp...if those Wild Brazils Paul sent were from the ones I grew out...I now believe them to be Bird Aji...can be found on this page along with the pics of the Praetermissum variety...

Here is a flower pic from my Wild Brazil...

Definitely Baccatum to me...Love this plant!!! Grew huge and hundreds of pods weekly. I snack on them every time I walk by. Small leaves, pods and flowers will make it a great Bonchi candidate for you as well. I plan to grow one to one gallon this season along with some Cumari, Tepin and pequins to Bonchi. All my Bonchis were knocked out along with everything else last season :mope: Oh well...another excuse to grow a few extras this season! :woohoo:

Still reading through your grow...this thing is moving at lightening speed! May top 100 pages by seasons end!

Hey Doc yeah no doubt it probably is time for a few gratuitous pod porn shots ... will try to get around to it today. Its a bit tough trying to keep my photos fresh this season with such a limited number of plants. I will need to devise some new poses ;) :D

Hey Shane thanks for stopping in!

So a Baccatum ay? That's interestiing. Any baccatum I have grown has always been one of the most productive plants in my garden so it makes sense to me that this variety is productive. Aji Lemon, Bishops Crown , Dedo de Moca and Blondie ( I think Blondie is a baccatum however I may be mistaken) however they also seem to be the first plants effected by mites but strangely they stay productive albeit in reduced capacity.

Paul actually sent me some of the seeds so I will have to give it a whirl next season.
My wild Brazil is supposed to be a Chinense variety and certainly has that Chinense taste and slower ripening characteristics and a great burn albeit short lived.

I can see myself ending up with quite a few bonchis I think simply so I can have a wide variety of plants without taking over the balcony !

I don't think I will top you or PaulG in posts and page count somehow :D. I just don't do enough experiments or interesting posts!! Plus once I am back at work my ability to post is severely reduced so I tend to spend less time on here . Not only that but I simply don't have the shear amount of loyal followers you two have !! I notice you are on your second page already !! ;) :D

Thanks for clarifying, Shane. I looked at
the page; is it possible this is the one? The
pods sure look right.
Capsicum chacoense, a wild species from Argentina
9 pages, Trippa! Dude, I haven't even started yet!
Nice glog, my friend, great watching your grow!
Your bonchi plan sounds great. I have a mind to try
a couple as well.
Guess it's back to the drawing board for the Wild Brazil!

Don't wanna hijack Tripp's thread, but if it will push him closer to 80 some-odd pages what the heck!!!
Think this is the one Paul...

Either way Tripp...was one of my favorite plants. Picked several pound of these little pods off two plants...and they're still loaded with pods and flowers through the frost!

Did yah get out to see The Hobbit yet? Loved it almost as much as the book! What I don't love is waiting a full year to see the second part!!!!!!

Yeah sure did!! Saw it in Standard 24FPS 3D and loved it ... now really want to go back and see it how it was supposed to be seen in 48FPS! Loved the way it ended and the Gollum scene is brilliant to pick out a couple of scenes ... loved it though not sure what the critics are on but meh ...

Thanks Shane .... tempted to throw a couple of seeds in there now .... but I must resist ... I have only just got a handle on my plants as it is :)

Will try to get some photos today of my newly tended plants .... they are looking ok at the moment (the epson salts seems to be working well) considering the broad mite issue is still quite prevelant. Going to have to whack them with a half strength lime sulphur still even though I don't want to kill the good bugs it simply is the lesser of two evils at this point in time it would seem. I have been putting it off as I have seen (what I am fairly certain) are some naturally occuring predatory mites out and about (much faster then normal mites and certainly bigger) but the thrips are also still around the place and they will not be affected by them.

OK On with some shots .. not many today but here they are (Quite a few of the same pods because I liked the pods :D)

Yellow%25207%2520Pot-pod%2520Freak.JPG

Check out the Freak Yellow 7 Pot/pod I have here!! I will be saving seeds from this pod it is simply outstanding I think and quite large (although not as large as another one of my yellow 7pot/pods current pods)

I Have a couple more photos to come ....

Impressive pod pics! Love the brainy yellow 7.

You're getting some great pods considering.... if I remember right you are growing on a balcony only??

.. and the alphanerdz douglahs are the same that THSC sells?

Good lookin' pods there, Trippa! How was the taste and heat of the Goronong? I know it's not a super, but the one that I'm growing has a pleasant heat and nice flavor.

Very nice shots Trip, you are getting some nasty pod shapes. I saw The Hobbit in 48FPS... it is almost too much IMO. I agree the gollum scene was intense. I know it's all fairytale but I was feeling sorry for the fellow. Hate to wish my life away but I can't wait till the next one. Smaug is going to be epic!

Thanks Mega!!

Yeah a covered Balcony is my growing platform. Extremely limiting but I just make do. I think the high humidity on it makes it a hot bed for pests and plant health issues.

Yeah the "Alphanerdz" is THSC strain they sell. From one of the members here originally I believe but I haven't seen them around for quite a while.

Trippa, nice pics! I like the Douglah and last shot of Yellow 7 Pot/pod best :)

Thanks walk good!!
Yeah they are nice pods ... will be interesting to see if the heat matches the looks when it comes time to try them

Thanks doc!! Interestingly enough I haven't eaten one yet. That is only the second ripe pod from the plant so far and I haven't eaten either yet. I will taste one tonight and let you know what I think. They certainly look great!!

Yeah looks like I am in for some pain in the near future if those pods live up to their looks.
So was the 48fps worth it or not in your mind?? Oh exactly that scene had every emotion in it. Just brilliant IMO.
Yeah its going to be an epic 2nd installment I think.

Currently on the way to work on the train.... how depressing ... I need more time off dammit :D

By the way when people use mulch on there container plants how do they usually measure/tell when the plants are due for a water?? I am used to using time and visual indicators of the soil itself but the mulch makes that impossible. I guess pot weight could work?? Anyone else have any other methods which work well (apart from wilting leaves :D )
