Variegated Jalapeno Grow Log

So a couple years back when I was working on a commercial grow for a greenhouse I spotted this guy when I was sorting through a few dozen of our Jalapenos in 512 cell trays.  It wasn't likely to be a cross, as the seeds came from isolated seed stock from a company that only sells to nurseries. None of the other plants we had ended up looking like this. I was keeping a close eye on them.  We didn't offer any variegated peppers there at the time, so I had a hunch it was something special.  I took it home with me and tossed it in a SOLO cup.

A bit later on that season I snapped a few more pics of the plant.

I waited for the pods to ripen and saved seeds, hoping for good things.   They took a long time to ripen and were quite corked.  Unfortunate that I didn't think to take better photos at the time:

Shortly afterwards I started some of those seeds and these guys turned up:

This is about as far as I managed with them, as I moved three hours away and started a new job.  Many of my plants were severely neglected for a span of a few months and all but one of them kicked the bucket.  I'm happy that I sent out seeds for these to several folks (who did have success with them!) and I am starting to grow some more thanks to Paul G and Chris Phillips.

That's where I am right now!  Hopefully Canedog, Paul and Chris will chime in with their experience growing them.

Cheers.

Its been nearly 15d since my last VJ update so here it is.
Now that the plants have more leaves they seem to finally have better uptake of water (like most do but these guys were always behind).

I know I said thanks already but this has been really nice to do to contrast with the ongoings outdoors right now. Looking forward to sharing what comes off these plants with all of you.

Plants look good, for a plant full of virus

Yours are progressing nicely, PM. Mine
are in quarts, and I'm going to put them
in #1 cans soon. I'm debating on whether
to put them out or grow them indoors.

A look at some of the flower buds...

This will definitely be a variegated pod!:

Notice the little knobby calyx teeth
on the pods in all the pix.

Nice flower nestled in the white foliage.
The bushy growth tips of the white branches
are typical for this variety:

Looks like a pod setting on the plant
from the white pod seed. I have been
pollinating with a soft brush. Pollen
forming on most of the plants:

If these flowers all set pods, there will
be a rainbow of variegated fruit:

They're growing fast, Paul!  The pedicel streaking looks cool, as do the chunky teeth, and it seems you're getting some purple blush on the closed flowers.  Even a fair amount on the one.  I haven't seen noticeable purple in an open flower of these, before.  Have you?
I have not, CD, at least that I can remember

The variety of pod coloration should be very
interesting. I think the fact that the pod coloration
matches the leaf coloration at the pod’s node is
super cool.

First pepper harvested today from a non-variegated jalapeño. Seeds are saved to grow out to see if there’s any variegation in the offspring.
Allright, first pod of 2021!

As a bonus, it’s a tasty jalapeño! Sweet and milder heat.

That's good news, Patrick! Glad to hear
they should make good poppers! They look
to be smaller. I don't really use the grande
jalapeños much, but love the popper sized
ones.

My all white with anthocyanin continues to look healthy, but it's growing slower than the rest.  The only green so far was on the cotyledons and even they were variegated.  Hoping it can hang in there.

That is a beautiful plant, CD.
I hope it finally takes off for you.

Would be cool to see a little flower!

More variegated pods coming soon.

I'm going to group plant three each of the green
variegated and ivory variegated plants in large tubs.

Ivory variegated seed plants:

Green variegated seed plants:

An ivory variegated plant in a #3 (2.25 gals.) nursery
pot. This one has the most interesting foliage:

The lone plant from the white pod seed, in
a #2 short pot:

Looking forward to seeing what else is going
on in the Variegated Jalapeño world.

Looks like they're all growing well for you.

Not only great-looking foliage, but I see some of the purple and white in the branches too.

I hope these guys can be stabilized into something similar to this.

Thanks, CD, if they grew this well every year, I could
start on March 1 instead of Feb. 1    Chili gods
have been kind so far   ;)

I agree. I really like the colors. They all have a good start,
so we will see what the Summer brings.

I notice the plants in the first two pics all have
grown out a long green branch with little variegation,
and one of the ivory variegated has grown out two. I
wonder if the plant in the third pic will do that? Will be
interesting to see how all that green foliage affects
the growth of the variegated parts of the plants.
