Thankyou sir! I was getting perlite/vermiculite mixed up, i bought vermiculite from bunning not perlite. Found vermiculite on ebay for about $50 per 100 litres.

Me thinks that they made a little mistake with their temps!

Stage Light Lighting Time Dark Time Hanging Height Best Temperature
First 2-4wks (Recovery Stage) MH 18hrs 6hrs Infinity to 18in. 72-76 degree Celsius
Last 8-9wks HPS 12hrs 12hrs 18in. 72-76 degree Celsius

Isn't perlite better though in terms of not breaking down/being crushed as easily??

Ha hadn't noticed the temps thing ... thats one warm grow chamber ....

I don't know really as this is the first time using vermiculite for myself i just mix some into my dirt mix. I have used perlite in the past by itself to grow mexican tomatos though so i know what you mean. Maybe i will start using perlite instead, it's cheaper too!

Yeah the 5L richgro bags of perlite or vermiculite at bunnings are a rip off.

Perlite I use in large pots with mature plants in them to improve drainage and air.

Vermiculite is mainly for it's water retention, it's very soft and breaks down easy, but I use it in seedling mix to hold moisture and liquid ferts for young plants.

I would use washed pumice over either if it was more readily available here. Thats what I used to use in New Zealand as it is completely natural and was heaps cheaper (probably due to the fact that it simply has to be washed and packaged and it is ready to go. It is very common on beaches etc)

You can get fine & coarse pumice pretty easily in Vic, I have often used it for cacti.

I was going to say, check cacti suppliers and sellers. That's where I've heard of pumice used the most.
Edit: Probably won't be cheap here though like it is in NZ, probably cost more than perlite.
Maybe try asking http://www.australianperlite.com/contact-us.htm

Really ... I haven't seen it up here at all. Well maybe I should continue to look. Its great stuff.

I get it at a garden supplies centre in rural Vic, It's actually quite cheap as they deal in huge quantities. You basically grab a bag and a shovel and they make up a price lol.

i'm finding a lot of people that grow chillies also grow cacti. Cacti were my first thing into gardening. They are pretty neglected now that i spend all my time on chillies though.
I went to the dept of agriculture yesterday and took in my seedlings to confirm what it was. He agreed that it was bacterial leaf spot but then later when ii was looking through one of their books i realised it is more than likely target spot which has the rings in the middle like my first lot of plants. The officer then said it could be that too but cant be 100% without expensive tests. Either way vthe book said that they can both be carried on with seed. I asked him about sulfur and he agreed that you can use it but like i thought it can control but not cure the disease. So I've chucked all the plants except for the seedlings not affected which i will keep quarantined. I have doused the hothouse with chlorine and left for almost 24hrs as well as run that through one of the systems.
New seeds planted and will be placed back in there tonight.

Same Candice, it's because they're both rad... :D I finally repotted all my cacti yesterday (they really needed it), I felt pretty proud lol.
I lost a few of them to orange rot... salvaged what I could.

It's scary that both are/can be seed born.

:woohoo: Billy Biker hook showed up today. Been looking forward to this one thanks Gassy!
Are they thicker walled, larger or hotter than a norm jal?
I've got hooks and seedlings from at least one of each from everything in my grow list I've planted so far, except congo blacks and choc bhuts and yellow 7 pots.
Now to keep them alive and not stuff them up like I did my June/July seedlings

I was gonna say cos they are both evil :hell:
It sounds like teh aids of chilli plants. Booooooooo
mm it does, thats no good. I stuck most of mine in the front garden when i bought a house, so not much repotting

Candice didn't you post much earlier in this thread about a rural supplies place in WA to get cheap perlite. I was going to go and get some but I still have half a bag and I'm not at the stage of needing it just yet. Getting close though.
