And not sure this tiny little thing is even gonna have any seeds in it - let alone whether they will even be viable or not! But it's a Jimmy Nardello x Scotch Bonnet parent pod (is that what you call them?):

REALLY hoping I will get a chance to grow out my first F1 hybrid!

Micca, we have a few of these mag things kicking around work as a promotional give away. They are meant for checking the wear on carbide tips.

Nice to see you are underway Fubar. Excellent growlist too

Mmmmm a couple of Bhuts in a Vindaloo, now were talkin!!!

Micca

Yeah, Vindaloo from my authentic cooking cook, marinated, slow cooked pork. Add some fresh bhuts with all the tomato and garlic. Can't wait, my friends won't be able to take it hhahaha.....

Not if you keep the pellets moist. They can dry out pretty quick though so be careful about that.

Yeah I've made some adjustments, now sitting at 31 degrees. hopefully it stays that way, the temperature at the top of the jiffy should be slightly lower than that of the top.

Did ya bury the Jiffy's?

Not to worry, just dig 'em up! ;)

Yeah, after reading your suggestion and some rethinking, I have started over using the pellets and nothing else.

Hahaha i want to know about the jiffies too! Yeah fubar if you allow as much air in as needed to cool and keep the pellets moist you will be just dandy. :P

Excellent, I have got it sustained to 31 degrees without the roof, one would assume it would be slightly cooler at the top, especially in a garage. Will measure later, but if I persist in keeping the moisture up, everything should be very exciting for me very soon! How long can seeds take to sprout? I have read 8 weeks, but I would have thought 3 weeks would be the most.

Chinense can take a while normally. Average person with heat mat about 12 days would be my guess but they can take up to four weeks and beyond.

Those little babies are coming along excellent there Gas. Nice work!

Well just got my Thermostats through today :woohoo:

Now i'll see if I can get a more constant temp and get some of those trickier little buggers to sprout.

SWEET you got them nice work. You'll have to let us know how they go. I hope they work out for you!!

What in everyone's opinions have been their most challenging seeds to germinate and what (apart from the obvious easy ones like Super Chillis etc) have been the easiest (out of the harder seeds to germinate ie Chinenses)?

I always thought (after learning a bit on here) that the Bonda Ma Jacques were a little tougher to germinate but I have been having good luck with them so far (2 out of 3 so far) and the Aji Lemons were very easy (IS this normal?) Little too early and too many mistakes made to say what was/is the most difficult, but it appears the Scotch Bonnetts/Dorset Nagas (albeit old seed) are tough as are Yellow 7 pot/pod and Hot Cherry's. (so far 0 out of 15 of those 4 varieties have sprouted although to be fair they haven't had the easiest of times/temperatures)

Cheers for the link Trippa, will let you know how they go.

My hardest to germ has been Wild Cumari Bolinha and the easiest or quickest so far has been Dorset Naga(4 days I think).
Had some Nagas that took 6 weeks to germ too that were pain in the......

Hi,
Great thread here, some good ideas.
Can't really take part as I planted some seeds back in March and took advantage of our hot April. Got a red hab, a SB, a jalapeno and cayenne from that lot, though they are no bigger than what I'm seeing here from all your efforts of seeds planted two months later!

I'm using all this as a practice run with what ever is laying about my house. I found this forum when checking out THSC, and I'm just stuffing about testing everything before I buy seeds from there.

I have loved chillies for a long time, I usually buy a couple of plants every chilli festival (some plants are 3 years old and still going). About 18 months ago I tried my hand a germinating by buying a heap of seeds from the chilli seed bank, but never had a lot of success. I gave up and just bought plants from wildfire or burning taste buds last summer, but I really want to grow from seed.
So last summer I also tried to grow from my own seeds from my existing plants too and only had a 20% success rate but that was just for an experiment. But that's why I have a red hab, a SB, a jalapeno and cayenne I planted in March.

But I just found an old peltier fridge that works well to keep seeds warm, so I'm going to give this another go. I've put in all the seeds I still have from the chilliseed bank and a few of my own.
Maybe they won't germinate, especially the CSB ones as they are quite old, but it's just to test the suitability of trying the peltier and also let me know of how much of an eye to keep on it in regards to soil drying out and whether I should use potting mix or spring for jiffys.

Also the other experiment is lighting. Right now I found a fluoro work light (small 30cm long ones to use when working under cars, seems the right colour spectrum though, very 'blue'). I'm going to use that over the red hab, a SB, a jalapeno and cayenne I have to see if that make a huge difference alone, or if not, maybe they they need warmth too.
So I'm going to waste this month waiting on old seeds, getting my stuff together and making some lights and have a proper crack at it in August with some new seeds from THSC.

Been reading this thread all last night while waiting for the registration to go through. Getting excited that i may be able to have a multiples of plants if I can grow from seed, rather than just the one if I buy the seedling.

Yeah Gas your plants are looking beautiful ... so healthy ... makes mine look pathetic so far with their stingy dad only giving them sunlight and average conditions :(

Welcome aboard Pablo.
Only missed 1 year at the Chilli fest, it's always a great weekend and was even better when it was up Araluuen.
Nice to see you getting into it, theres lots good info on this forum.

:welcome: Pablo

I have had good seeds from the Chilli Seed Bank but there are plenty around to try if you don't like one company.

Fubar if I read it right you said your heat mat runs at a set temp. The dome on top is to keep humidity in there so the seeds stay moist. So rather than take it off and risk the seeds drying out perhaps you could put some sort of insulation between the heat mat and the germination tray. Something like thick ply cardboard or styrofoam. You could even just chock it up on each corner with something like a matchbox and let air circulate underneath the germ box.

Micca I looked at those thermostats on ebay and they look good if they do what they claim. Are you going to plug some heating pads into them? Can you see if they could work by turning ON when a high temp is reached and turn OFF when a low temp is reached?

Trippa I got a packet of Hot Cherry from THSC last year and have gotten zero so far with lots of different methods. I just soaked some and planted them on 6/6 - 3 plus weeks - and I'm still waiting. Might just be a bum lot.

Thanks all.

Nothing against chilli seed bank, some germinated and then I put them outside all day and they died. My own chilli seeds had a low germination when they shouldn't, so the problem is me not them. I only mentioned them because that was my first seed buying activity, and I'm now trying to germinate some old seeds from that lot right now.

No problems with the link I just hope they work out well for you.
So your quickest have been the Dorset Naga ? I hope I get some luck with some of my Chinense Var. other then the Bonda's!

Yeah I got my Hot Cherry seeds from THSC a few weeks ago and planted some on the 5th June and some on the 12th June some with soaking some without.

So far Zilch but then again I have not started any straight in the propagator as yet so it may not be a seed problem for my ones maybe more operator error! I will give them another shot with my next round of Germination's in a week or so because they were one variety I was really looking forward to having as a pizza topping variety, and for the fact they have a nice compact growth habit.

Iv'e had the Thermo working all night on my hydrafarms heatmat and seems to be going very well. You set the temp, say 30Deg and when it goes 1Deg above or below it will turn on or off accordingly. It has been sitting on a constant 29 Deg.C all night, but will have to see when it warms up a bit if it will stay at 30Deg.

Hey Pablo remember to try Candice at Wildfire too for seeds. She has some real nice hot ones!

Good to hear the thermostat is working as it should do Micca lets hope it continues.

Has anyone used the Root Riot cubes for starting seeds before?? And if so what are they like in comparison to Jiffy Pellets?

Root Riot Cubes

Also does anyone know if chilli focus is 100% organic and/or certified organic?

Sorry for the mounting number of questions but I only ask what I can't seem to find out my self.

I read everything on the bottle and it makes no mention of organic. It does say "manufactured" and "exacting formula" so I'm guessing its not organic. It's usually something they make a big deal of telling you if it is.

Mega, it has "organic" on the front of the bottle. I vote for it being not organic in the purest sense of the word though.
