Dead black flies on dill flowers

I have tons of little dead black flies all over my plants. I believe they hatched out of the derth of manuer I liberally applied in my garden this year. They hatch, buzz about for a time, rest under a leaf at night or in rain, then they die. I note no harm to those plants from the experience.

Hand pollinating with tools or no?

    There are a 'few' differences.

seeds When to prick out seedlings?

With that many I'd do it right now, leave a few where they are to then slay all but the strongest. If you leave them too long, their roots will mingle and make the process more difficult and trying on the seedlings. Seedlings that have just started tend to have a longer single root that is easy...

water using lake water to water pepper plants

If the system is fairly open, a weeks worth of exposure to air and sunlight (mostly sunlight) will degrade chloramines. Otherwise, lake water would likely be fine, depending on how your store it. Though you might bring in a few more mosquitos than you'd like.

If you fill your water barrels, and leave them be for a bit, the chlorine will work its way out in a few days anyway.

soil Thoughts on VERY Basic Soilless Grow Mix

http://www.mysquarefootgarden.net/mels-mix/ Mel's mix is a fine soiless mix. Though I modify mine by using a bit more manuer and less peat moss. I don't much care for peat moss or perilite. I've got some tomatoes growing in my mix now and its doing just dandy fine. For peppers you can mix in a...

    Wasps and Yellow Jackets

I was out in my garden the other day and saw a wasp jumping from plant to plant, exploring each one. I just stood there and watched it for awhile, when it came up near me, landed on a shelf and commenced eating a plump green grub of some kind. It ate the whole thing, I decided then and there...

Any hope for my Tabasco? :(

I seem to have misunderstood. I though he had tried planting the broken off stem!

Any hope for my Tabasco? :(

Since that plant has no corresponding roots to aid all that greenery up top, I expect it to die. If you're actually interested in saving the plant I would cut of most of the top growth, no roots cant support all that stuff up there without great care, a humidity dome, and foliar feeding.

    seeds Satrting from Seeds

    1. If I purchase seeds now will they be ok for say November planting? If you start seeds that early make sure you use a larger sized pot, I use a .3 gal air-pot for my early starts. If they grow well and you use a standard pot, they may become greviously root bound. The seeds themselves...

No way to ask this in a single entendre...

Hell, I had a few of my sprouts come up with no cotyledon. Just a green stem, somewhat bizzare.

seeds Can I start seeds year round?

You can bring your outdoor plants in http://www.fatalii.net/growing/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=95&Itemid=105 You can be pretty brutal about knocking the dirt away. Watch closely for pests for a time. If you plan on growing under lights, feel free to plant away at any time, so...

    Smart Pot Problem

You don't have a problem. As others have pointed out there was simply more humidity in areas where roots grew out of the pot. This statement however " I was told that the roots would grow better as the walls redirect them to grow inside" Covers a standard plastic type pot. You want the air pot...

No way to ask this in a single entendre...

I've had the limp thing happen before, to my plants. Time healed the issue, all I did was let it go along and the stem eventually straightened out and became normal. I didnt change any habits or light distance or anything else since other sprouts had no issues. I would suggest in future growing...

pests Flat pests all over my Pequin

I had insects that look like that all over my stevia plant. I also had a bunch of other stuff. My solution was to: Crush 2 cloves of garlic in a medium glass of water and leave it for 2-3 days pour that mix into a spray bottle with a dab of dish soap (I use organic env. friendly(er) stuff)...
