Theory On Tailed or Stingered Pods

I like AJ's theory about the "annular rings" but could it also be some sort of external defense mechanism? Sort of like how a cactus or prickly pear have spines. The capsaicin might be enough to ward off certain mammals and herbivores but a visible "stinger" may be interpreted as some type of...

    Feferoni

Feferoni are the most common type of hot pepper in Balkan countries such as Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia. They are usually pickled green and are a staple in most homes. The heat is cayenne type and is usually hot enough for most people.

Worm and insect juice secret to record ButchT?

I just did a little research on CHITIN which is the exoskeleton of insects and various marine crustaceans like shrimp, crab, and lobster. It appears that there is use for it in agriculture since it triggers a plants natural defense mechanisms, thereby in theory should produce hotter peppers. I...

    Very Basic Question

I've found that once the plants are hardened off, especially with the narrower and hardier foliage the plant starts to grow when brought outside, then it can withstand extremely hot temperatures in direct sunlight. However, I've also noticed considerable flower drop in these hot temperatures...

I bought a Black Czech plant.

I've grown the Black Czech before and it looks beautiful in the garden. The ripening process is neat to observe. I found that I liked to eat them straight off the plant, cut up into a salad which really livened it up. However, they were not very good to cook with, for example fried in an...

    Yellow Burkina

I bought the Burkinas from Tradewind's Fruit a couple of years ago and they were fantastic. Amazing flavor and a little milder than something like a Fatali but definitely a C. Chinense.

    preservation VInegar / Pepper ratio?

I'm making just a basic hot sauce that I plan on pressure canning into a few jam jars so my batch could last me a couple of months. I would then refridgerate the opened jars. The recipe I intend to use goes something like this: 4 cups of mixed peppers (Orange habs, Fatali, Cayenne, etc.) 3-4...

    Space needed for Manzanos?

Manzanos take up a hell of a lot of room. They grew wider a bushier than any other pepper I've ever grown. Also last summer was extremely hot which manzanos don't like as was evident by constant flower drop. The result was low yield. I heard similar results from other growers.

    Red Savina

What about Hippy's red savina. I'm growing some this year. Anybody grow it before and is it the real deal?

    Cold Stratification

I've been reading up on this method of refrigerating certain types of seeds to break their dormancy, which essentially tries to mimic a winter to spring season change. But I'm wondering if this works with pepper seeds. Every year I end up with one or two seed packs where I get 0% germination no...

    Naga Morich vs. Dorset Naga

I know that these two are the same pepper and how the Dorset Naga came to be. But now that the dust has settled, are there essentially any differences, such as fruit size, abundance, or even heat. I would expect the Dorset then to be a superior Naga Morich. What are some of your experiences...

Wonder Where That Pepper Joe Went?

His sales most likely go to newbies who haven't yet experienced the wisdom provided by The Hot Pepper forum. :)

Wonder Where That Pepper Joe Went?

A couple years ago I grew a tabasco and a couple of charleston hots from Pepper Joe. Those plants looked like hell. Very pale and shrivelled foliage with mediocre fruit set. A stark contrast to the 40 other lush and bountiful pepper plants from other suppliers. Then I tried some of his orange...

What about the Dorset Naga? How would it compare with the Bhuts, Scorpions and 7 Pods?

    indoor Indoor Tepin and Jolokia

Don't get too anxious with the tepins. They take months to ripen. I've had green pods form in July and they didn't turn red until December.

    seeds Freezing seeds?

You should be more worried about the postal processing equipment. A letter goes through an unbelievable amount of machinery which can crush the seeds. How do I know? I see this process everyday. It's better to send the seeds in bubble envelopes.

chinense So I give a guy I know one of my Scorpions to try.

He didn't eat it. I've had this happen many times. I've given peppers such as Fatali or Bih to people and then they claim that they inhaled it no problem (in their own house with nobody else to witness it). These same people then eat a cayenne or serrano at my place and are then screaming in...

Do you prefer your super hots over your others?

Potawie, can you elaborate on this? I've heard that capsaicin can be used to deter certain pests but not sure which critters and also method of application (spray or powdered). I too always end up with more superhots than I know what to do with so finding alternate uses would be nice.
