annuum What Jalapeno should I grow?

Interesting comments...my own experience growing (and eating) both Jalapeno and Fresno's goes counter to some of the posts here. In three seasons of growing both types, I had more trouble with my Jalapeno's than the Fresnos - the 'peno's seem to be far more sensitive to watering, produce less...

    Picklese...You Have To Try This!!!

As long as you use enough vinegar - the pickling liquid used in picklese iis 100% vinegar (2% to 5% is typical in store bought vinegars), and keep it refrigerated, it's fine. No need to heat or boil. Enjoy!

    Picklese...You Have To Try This!!!

Wade - I would not try Scotch Bonnets, as most are hotter than grocery store Habs. You might try cutting down on the quantity of Habs, or try using the Serranos or Jalapenos - though I think the citrus-y flavor of Habs goes very well with the picklese. You could also leave the Habs whole (less...

    Picklese...You Have To Try This!!!

Actually, I have a beach cottage and house in MA....may be moving back soon (not by preference, though). Went to the Topsfield Fair last October, was surprised at the number of superhot peppers entered in the vegetable categories....some good looking Bhuts and Vipers. Wouldn't have thought it...

    Picklese...You Have To Try This!!!

OK, I'll give you that...but a SD native, Ralph Rubio (we know the Rubio family) did bring them to the US. ;) I've been draining the picklese on paper towels, otherwise the vinegar taste can be overwhelming. At any rate, between all the jars of pickled peppers, hot carrots and pickles, and now...

    Picklese...You Have To Try This!!!

I did try the fish tacos - I mixed the Picklese with sour cream and mayo and used it as the dressing along with a squeeze of lime. Tasted great - different from the usual white cabbage dressing, but not sure I liked it better. The vinegar taste seemed out of place, but maybe that's because we...

    Picklese...You Have To Try This!!!

Major props to the original poster - I made a batch a couple days ago, but seeing as how it sounded like a great condiment, I rough shredded the onions and carrots and chopped the thinly sliced cabbage into 1" lengths. I finely diced up six medium sized (1 1/4") orange Habs I had frozen from...

vendor Cross Country Nurseries...Now with Video Review by MGOLD

Didn't know they were known by another name! Looks like the threads have been merged already. All of my plants from CCN/chileplants.com are doing awesome....the Hirts plants, not so much. Criolla bella doing OK, the Datils look to be on the edge of death. I'm posting pics every few weeks or so...

vendor Cross Country Nurseries...Now with Video Review by MGOLD

Found this nursery doing a Google search for lemon drops back in mid-March, and found that they had an extensive selection of plants available. Ordered a small number of 7-Pots, Fatalis, Lemon Drops, and Chocolate Habs on March 18th, with the understanding that they would not ship untill the...

hot-sauce Looking for a certain west indian-style hot sauce

I have a Trini buddy who owns a local restaurant, called him to see if he was aware of anything with a label like that. It's probable that it was a locally-produced sauce and not exported. The most common Trinidadian sauce (and best West Indian pepper sauce that I've yet tried) is Matouk's, but...

Any "Game of Thrones" fans here?

Been reading the series for years, the TV version has done an excellent job of keeping to the story line, IMHO. Just watched the 2nd season premiere - looks good. People who have not read the books are in for a few (more) surprises, as fans already know, the good guys don't always (rarely!)...

Too many plants, garden too small, need cheap plastic pots

Try a local nursery or garden supply store - they recycle and/or give away pots from unsold or dead/destroyed plants. I have picked up 100's of containers, from seedling size to 5 gallon (more like 3 gallon!) plastic pots for free, and they are happy to see someone re-use them. You'll need to...

Are these looking ok or not?

They are starting to look a bit leggy to me...flourescent lighting is probably the cause. Can you move the light source closer? Agree that it is time to pot up. I use 2 tablespoons of epsom salts to a gallon of water and spray using a squirt bottle. Maybe cut this down a touch as they are still...

indoor indoor douglah is healthy but flower buds drying up very small

Any full blossoms yet? Just a thought - in an indoor setting, there aren't (usually!) any pollinating insects and very little air movement. Might be possible that the flowers aren't getting pollinated....you might try doing a little "self satisfaction" using a Q-tip. : ) Barry

    recipe-help Chile Infused Honey - and recipes/techniques?

For Christmas last year, I was given a pint bottle of "chile pepper infused" honey (no pepper types mentioned in the ingedients list) that my sister bought at a craft fair near her home in Chatanooga, TN. I have used it several times now and enjoy the sweet/hot flavor on cornbread, muffins, and...

    Hello from San Diego

Hey Jeff - Yes, I learned that by experience last year! I try to keep my pickling jars filled with just the same types now, but occasionally there will be a few strays/leftovers of mixed types that go into a single jar - no superhots, though. I think the jar in the pic is one of those -...

    Damn... sensory overload?

For years, I've always thought I was pretty much a badass when it came to eating hot stuff - but that was before I discovered the real superhots, i.e. something other than grocery store habs, serranos, and jalapenos. Lately I've started to develop (for me) an odd reaction to levels of heat...
