Anyone Else Like Fresh Boiled Crawfish?

When are you coming to Houston lost?....

Houston is only about 100 miles from where the best crawfish are grown in southern Louisiana...

Ahhhhh, blue crabs.........don't I feel stupid!

Just had a load of snow crab, my out and out favorite.

Blue crab is wonderful....if someone else picks it for you. I wouldn't turn it away, but for all of the trouble, not much meat.

King crab is OK, but honestly I like snow crab texture better.

I believe in May/June. 100 miles = 1 hour car ride? Maybe 2 with traffic? Might be worth taking an extra day or two and seeing a bit of Texas.

May will be good....June is getting late season for crawfish...

Houston is a very large city with lots of crime...kinda like New York City...if you decide to take a couple of extra days, I definitely would recommend going to San Antonio and touring the Alamo...definitely a piece of US history...and while you are in San Antonio, you could run up the road about an hour and go to Luckenbach...if you like Texas/Country music...there is always someone sitting under the trees in back of the store picking music and drinking beer...

CH, I could say the same to you about crawfish but I just let it lay the first time...but came back later to take that stink bait...

1st I never said I didnt like the taste of them just I didnt like them in general, ok taste like shrimp. just too much work for so little meat & the slime from the head, no thanks.

I don't know why everything I say is considered "stink bait" to you ? while others say basically the same things or sling mud 1st but theirs is not considered stink bait

you'd be in heaven if you went to a casino around here, they have seafood night & its a buffet :drooling:
king crab, snow crab, shrimp, calamari, prime rib, plus all sorts of other items. its huge! drop a $20 & pig out on seafood, you'll get your moneys worth no problem.
they keep'em full of crabs & people walk away with platefulls of crabs! many people walk away with 2 platefulls!
now I want to go back there for seafood night

Crawdads are OK, and I stick to the tails only, no head wheezing here.

I was stationed up in the Aleutian Islands many years ago and there are some prime King Crab hunting grounds around there. We had one of the boats stop by and use the services of our doc. On their way back they dropped off over 550lbs of fresh alive Alaskan King Crab as a show of appreciation. The Colonel closed the base and we had a party. We were using 50 gallon drums cut in half and open fires to cook them in. Guys were walking around with whole cooked crabs hanging off of their head, the legs extending to their waste. I've never ate like that in my life. Chunks of crab meat the size of the cardboard tubes paper towels are wrapped around.

I've never seen anything close to the size of those here in the states.

CH...my wife won't even go with me when I eat crawfish...she says it is very gross watching me eat them.... just kidding with you about the stink bait bro...

Absolutely!!! Born and raised in New Orleans, we'd have crawfish all the time. Now that I'm in VA I'm limited to 1 or 2 times a year. I usually do a big boil getting 6 sacks sent up here and boiling them for my friends. Not anyone can boil six sacks though...I have 3 100qt pots (for the crawfish), 2 30qt pots (for the trimmings), and 5 large propane tanks.

For anyone outside the normal crawfish eating area, I recommend http://www.lacrawfish.com/. They are usually the cheapest and offer two methods for delivery. I personally don't use their boil. I only use Zatarains, but I'm also working on my own mixture.

your cajun heat spice is great as an "additive" to crawfish I buy...the employees laugh when I bring my own spice...

I too use it as an "additive", but I hope to have a seasoning specifically for boiling seafood. You should see the looks I get in restaurants when my g/f pulls bottles of hot sauce and spice from her purse. We use my sauce a lot at TGIFridays mixed with their spinach and artichoke dip.

Well, the day I have been waiting for here in north Texas has arrived. I had my first boiled crawfish last night at a local cajun place...

They were absolutely excellent.

The cayenne burn was fantastic...after my first 2 pounds, the corners of my mouth were stinging...mouth was hot, nose was running, sweat pouring...then I had to eat another 2 pounds...then another 2 pounds...

Gotta admit, I love fresh boiled crawfish and they were decent size for first of the season...

Awesome stuff. I love mudbugs.

I went to the casino last night for dinner. I ate several platefulls of king crab, shrimp, & calamari. I was stuffed!!
I asked a chef there how many pounds of crab they go through for dinner on seafood night, he said about 1500 pounds. dinner is only for 6 hours.

thats a lot of crab....

I had my crawfish again Wednesday...they are still high as a cats back...7.25 a pound...only ate 4 pds... :(

I will be glad when they get down to 3 a pound...

15 pounds so far this year...

How do you sit down and scarf six pounds of crawdaddy's AJ? What's the food to waste ratio? That's a lot of food!

Me and my youngest two kids sat down last night and ate a few pounds of AK King Crab legs along with some garlic bread and we were stuffed.

Here's a quick pic of one of the "bones". The paper plate is 8.5" across.
