Carolina Reaper (HP22B) Community Grow

A few members including myself are growing seeds for this variety ASAP. I and a few others here on THP thought it would be fun to have a "community glog" strictly for this variety, a fun thread about the HP22B and growing this pepper for the first time.

I think we should start a community glog like this anytime there is a new pepper with alot of attention and alot of people growing it, possible world record holder or not. It would be fun, and this should be fun! That's why we all love this hobby is it not?

Therefore, this will be a drama-free, controversy-free, fun glog for all of us growers and others to enjoy. If you grow, please chime in. If you're growing this variety, please post pictures and chime in about your observations.

Again.. This thread is ment to be fun and informative, but mostly fun :)
Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.. lol. Keep it drama-free.
I, and many others would really appreciate this thread to stay that way.

Now lets get to growing!

I went with the paper towel method for this guy just like I have with all my mid-season starts. It is far from my favorite way to germinate seeds but I'm in no hurry this time of year which is why I went this route. I've had the seeds in the paper towel for about a week now on top of my HOT5 lighting closet. The seeds should be showing root tips soon, then they will be visiting some real soil :D

How's it going for everyone else?

For those considering selling seeds from your reapers or any by products, a member here pepper rich, brought up the subject on Facebook, and Ed had his lawyers contact Rich. Apparently any product of the reaper is not for ANY type of resale, just a heads up.
Luckily this is only enforceable in the USA - and we are quite an international community

You all have some beautiful, gnarly plants/pods. I'm glad to see this thread make it so long without getting derailed. My reaper plant started juking out the gate but stalled out the past few weeks. This hot weather has picked it back up from its slump. Hope I can post my own pod porn in a few weeks.
As for Trademarking the name...whatever's clever. I really think he should have stabilized the pepper before he started selling them to the public. (At a dollar a seed no less) instead of leaving it up to us to stabilize it ourselves.

Megh, we're all having fun with it.

Ed had his lawyer contact a member already and a mention was made about genetic testing of any reapers that are sold as a blocking maneuver to the trademarking rule if the pods are 'renamed" by the grower.

they sound pretty serious about it

Is there any proof to this, or is it just hearsay? Seems like there are/were quite a few vendors selling the seed, some of them members here. I would think Ed would have contacted them en masse and put all of them on notice right away. I just find it strange that everyone isn't talking about it.

The conversation occurred on Facebook in a private group many of us are part of and from here. It is factual, Ed may or may not stop by and I do not want to post the information but I did message a few folks as a heads-up.

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess that's the kind of stuff I miss out on by not doing the Facebook thing. What a shame, all the legal nonsense ruins the fun.

Can you grow pods and sell them? Or make sauce?

Yes to both, but it doesn't hurt to ask Pepper Joe first. I specifically asked for and got permission from Pepper Joe to make powders and sauces based exclusively on or including Reapers.

Now I am really confused... Pepper Joe is not the copyright holder, PBPC.LLC is the copyright holder. PepperJoe shouldn't have anything to do with giving permission to use. But, like Joyner's I am not a lawyer and the whole thing might be over my head.

You know what is wrong with our world in 2013?

If they'd spent more time on product development (is the reaper F8?) and less time with the lawyer ... There would be quite a bit more happy customers out there.

But what's that compared to fas' monies, right?

For the very same reason your 1st tv-set lasted 20 years and your next one will last 3-5. The companies just care about their balance sheets and not about customers...

Well they may as well genetically test the primos while they are at it ... ;)

Good luck getting genetics of an unstable hybrid to stand up in court

It is funny I can say something, it may be heresay, but somebody else comes along, and it is true. I do not come on here to lie........just so that is clear.

I do not think he was questioning you but you did not provide a source. Think of it as making a quote without a source for the information. 50% of what I see and 25% of what I hear I believe. ;)

BTW, The Rennie is growing awesome so thanks for that!

Jeez... Some people can be so sensitive. If I had wanted to call anyone a liar I would have.

Armac you just happened to be the first person I saw talking about this. I was honestly just surprised none of my fellow vendors had thrown up red flags. Had Chris or anyone else said it first I would have still asked for confirmation. I truly apologize if I hurt your ego.
