Hendrix1326's Glog for 2012, yay!

Okay, so I have been incognito here on the forums for the last couple of months. Been distracted by video games, working on house projects, etc. Anyway, I decided last week that once I laid the vinyl flooring in my laundry room that I would start germinating my seeds! I have settled on 20 varieties for this year, with (as many as) 50 plants, some of which I will keep at my mother's house, since she has a big garden space that won't all be used this year. I have the following varieties planted in Jiffy pellets in a "Germination Station" heating mat. I represented the "Big 5" species (Chinense, Annuum, Baccatum, Pubescens, Frutescens) with at least one variety, and also have a couple wilds (C.Lanceolatum, and one called "Tio") to round it out. Here is the list, with how many of each one I am growing in bold parentheses at the end:

Chinense:
01-Yellow Bullet Habanero (similar to Peruvian White, but with a distinct canary yellow color) (2)
02-Jamaican Hot Chocolate Habanero (2)
03-Red Biquinho Iracena (3)
04-CGN-21500 (2)
05-Red Aribibi Gusano (F1) (2)
06-White Bhut Jolokia (3)
07-Red 7-Pot (2)
08-Turtle's Claw (Aribibi Gusano) (2)
09-Zavory (3)

Annuum:
10-Red Pimiento (3)
11-Monkey Face (3)
12-Chicken Heart (2)
13-Purple UFO (2)
14-Hungarian Wax Cross (Unknown F1) (1, only got one seed!)

Baccatum:
15-Hot Lemon Drop (Aji Lemon) (3)
16-Bishop's Crown (3)

Pubescens:
17-Red Rocoto (3)

Frutescens:
18-CGN-22184 (3)

Lanceolatum:
19-Lanceolatum (Unknown Designation) (3)

Unknown Species:
20-Tio (3)

Here are the initial pictures of my embryonic grow rig, which will be overhauled by the time the seeds sprout:

By the time the seeds are seedlings, I plan on having all of the rest of my supplies, which includes nursery pots, convertible heat lamps, thermostat, heater, oscillating fans, pulleys, reflective materials, the whole shebangabang.

I also wanted to thank the following THP members for either trading, SASBE-ing, or giving me seeds which are among the ones I am growing this year:

cmpman1974 (Biquinho, Purple UFO)
2gods (Aribibi Red, CGN21500)
paulmtonkin (Red 7, Monkey Face, Turtle's Claw)
Pulpiteer (Hot Lemon Drop)
ZanderSpice (Rocoto, CGN22184)
DudeThtsBad (Tio)
aropupu (Lanceolatum)
S.S. Tupperware (Bishop's Crown)
dshlogg (White Bhut)
melissa77754 (Chicken Heart)

Also, thanks to whomever sent me the Zavory, I couldn't remember or find any trace of who it might be, but I know it was one of the fine folks here on The Hot Pepper. Also, thanks to HH Farm on eBay, who was one of the shining beacons of hope for Chili-Heads on that abyss, and provided me with delicious peppers of all kinds, and to whom I owe thanks for the Jamaican Hot Chocolate Habs, as well as the Yellow Bullet Habs, among others.

Stay tuned, everyone, I will have dynamic updates over the course of the year on this thread, right up until final harvests and overwintering processes in probably October. Thanks for checking this thread out!

Yes, I am looking forward to the Bishop's Crown for sure. I first heard about them a couple of years ago when Neil from The Hippy Seed Company did a review, and then I saw paulmtonkin try one, as well. The shape caught my eye so much that when it came time to choose, that was one I didn't really want to eliminate from planting, so I threw a few into the mix and off they go!

All right, the good news just keeps rollin'! Checked my heat mats today, and I have 29 new arrivals! Both of my Yellow Bullet Habs sprouted, all 3 Biquinho Iracenas, the other 2 Red Pimientos, both Red Aribibi Gusanos, the other 2 Monkey Faces, all 3 Zavorys, the other Purple UFO, all 3 Red Rocoto, 2 of 3 C.Frutescens CGN 22184, the other Orange Cheyenne, the other C.Frutescens Bird's Eye, both Peruvian Purples, both C.Species TC 07246, both Aji Citos, and the Kori Sitakame. We'll see what tomorrow will bring, this is so exciting! Next week, I will begin buying some more supplies, just have to decide which ones I will need first, and may even be able to get most or all of my stuff at once. Either way, some new gear my way comes!

Yay, another update! This morning, I checked in on the little ones, and lo! there were a few more sprouts. Both CGN21500 Chinense sprouted, (1) Red 7-Pot, (1) Peach Bhut Jolokia, the final Hot Lemon Drop, both Jamaican Hot Chocolate Habs (!), and (2) out of 3 White Bhuts. So, some more development today! I started transplanting my seedlings into Solo cups. My soil mix was from outside, under snow, and I thawed it out with buckets of hot water, so it's too wet, and I have to strain water out of it to use.

Anyway, I got six seedlings transplanted this evening, including (2) Hot Lemon Drops, (1) Bishop's Crown, and all (3) Red Rocoto.

In addition, I also have two new sprouts! 1 out of 3 Aji Crystal, and 1 out of 3 Orange Manzano have poked through, and the cotyledons are looking pretty! That brings my total to (50) sprouts/seedlings! Halfway through my seeds, all right!

Here is the running total of each:

Thanks for the encouragement, Andy!

All righty, so things just keep gathering momentum for my growing adventure this year! I checked on the little ones as soon as I got home from work this evening, and have a bunch of new sprouts! My second Red 7 has emerged, as well as one Purple Cayenne, both C.Eximium C01225s, Baker's Unknown #1, Trinidad Scorpion Morouga, one Yellow Cantina, both White Fatali, and both NagaBon!

In addition to this new development, I transplanted (11) more seedlings today into Solo cups. These included one Red Aribibi Gusano, all 3 Red Pimiento and all 3 Monkey Face, both Purple UFO, and 2 out of 3 Tios.

nice buddy! you should have a very nice summer :)

!!!
:fireball: :hot: :hotsauce:

mine were not very hot (jalapeno heat range) but man that taste is great!

would need to hybrid one with a super hot to have a "7 crown" or bishopion ;)

Hey, David!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to all the hard work to produce heaps of pods. I'm actually on Amazon.com right now, getting my plant foods (mostly organic, too!), and possibly some other supplies. Just got my Mylar reflective blankets in the mail today, and will pick up some cereal boxes from work tomorrow, tape those on, and enclose my plants. I also need to stop by the hardware store and obtain my lighting fixtures, bulbs, thermometers, oscillating fans, and possibly another heater, although maybe not. I also need to transplant a few more seedlings to Solo cups tomorrow, and package some seeds up to send for a trade with another THP member, and a SASE for another kind of seeds for 2013!

I just checked out your grow log, too, man already a Peach Bhut pod! Your plants look very happy and liking their environment. Great work, I look forward to seeing more coolness in that front for months to come. They Orange Cheyenne seedlings are doing well, the cotyledons are fanning out nicely, and the stalks are healthy. I have the Ring Of Fire and Apache seeds you gave me on my grow list for next year already, since I have so many varieties that I couldn't grow this year. Thanks again, and good luck as the season moves forward!

Okay, after a day incognito thanks to the Norwalk virus taking me out, I have some good news! Five more sprouts emerged today, and they are:

That's 34 out of 45 varieties represented now, cool stuff! These heating mats really did the trick! I will have more pics tomorrow or Tuesday, depending on how I feel tomorrow, and whether I get more transplanting done, which I really should do before legginess sets in any more (especially Aji Cito #2! & Lemon Drop #3!)

Okay, a bit of new work has gone into my pepper-grow-mania the past couple of days, since I've started to feel more energetic after the stomach bug kicked my boo-tay. Today, I got a bunch (35 to be exact) seedlings transplanted from the Jiffy pellets into Solo cups, making a grand total of 52 seedlings in their transitional home before potting up (hopefully) only once more before I put them outside. If I have to pot up again, so be it. Here is the updated tally list, with transplanted seedlings marked off at the beginning with an appropriate number of asterisks (*, **, etc...) denoting how many of the total number of seeds/sprouts has been transplanted. I have also some new sprouts since my last update, making my grand total of sprouted seeds 69 out of 100! About 1/3 are C.Chinense, and another 1/3 are wild species, so about what I figured for the suspects to be tough to germinate.

I also replanted several seeds the other day that I exhumed and found to be mushy/split open/dead, including #1 Bishop's Crown, all 3 C.Lanceolatum, both Chicken Heart, and #1 Peach Bhut Jolokia. I have a few more that I'm checking on tomorrow and will replant if they haven't sprouted yet, or are rotted, etc. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

In addition, I also took the time and consolidated my germination station into one heating mat & tray. I have only 48 peat pellets left, several of which will be transplanted tomorrow, so I reshuffled my operation a little bit more today.

Okay, so here is the running totals of sprouts, etc. I have so far:

ALL SPROUTED:

*White Bhut Jolokia - 3 of 3 (1 transplanted)

I will have some updated pictures again tomorrow with my transplanted seedlings, as well. Stay tuned!

Hey Karl, save me AJI Cristal seeds from the harvest in fall! looking forward for that variety!

i plant to grow AJI BLANCO Cristal which is not the same thing i think.... i heard that the crital (not the blanco one) is great!
so that's why im looking to grow that next year!

this year is Super hot and diversity (to test as much as i can)
next year will probably some super hot and much of the best i have tasted so far...

All right, so I have uploaded some new pics of my transplants, and a few choice seedlings. Great news, too, on the rigging! I went to Menard's yesterday and purchased (8) 200W daylight CFL bulbs, (2) vanity bar lights to put them in, as well as an oscillating tower fan, thermometer w/humidity sensor, and light timer. I got all of that out of the packages last night, but I didn't have time before my son needed to sleep to get more done, so I will get as much as possible done before I go to sleep tonight! More pictures will be forthcoming as my operation progresses. I just need to get some empty cereal boxes from work to tape the Mylar blankets to, and some chain and pulleys for hanging the lights, and I will be good to go!

Yes, the Aji Crystal is really good. Similar look to a Jalapeno, but it definitely has a more unique flavor, I guess the "Baccatum" flavor. Tasted similar in many ways to a ripe Annuum, such as Poblano/Serrano/Jalapeno, but with the Baccatum tone to it, as well. Really juicy, sweet, and tangy with a low-end burn right around Jalapeno. Apple and grape flavor notes, as well, and I really dug it overall.

I still have well over 100 seeds from just 4 months ago, so I could even send you those if you like. Either way, you will definitely be receiving some Aji Crystal seeds. Yeah, the Aji Blanco Crystal is different, but I'm not sure what it looks like, exactly.

Thanks Carl, keep me some seed on the side will have plenty of new stuff to trade this fall!

you should see my peach bhut plant! my god plenty of pod so far and the season has not even started yet ;) whatch out when this will be outside!

And i have some of your Red fresno seeds that popped up nicely i already have a plant that is 2 feet tall approx and with 5 pods!
cant wait to stuff them with feta !

Okay, so I've been hard at work trying to get my lighting/growing room done. I moved this morning and evening, with work in the middle, and got my second set of lights hung. This evening, I also hung the rest of my Mylar and got the thermometer/humidity sensor installed, too. Tomorrow, I have 17 seedlings to transplant:

Elephant's Trunk (1)
Tio (1)
Bishop's Crown (1)
C01225 (1)
C04392 (2)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate (1)
Zavory (1)
Purple Cayenne (1)
White Fatali (2)
NagaBon (2)
CGN22184 (1)
White Bhut Jolokia (2)
Trinidad Scorpion Morouga (1)

I have uploaded one picture, which is obsolete now as far as appearance of my room, from two nights ago. Lights are Vanity Bar Light fixtures from Menard's, rigged up to extension cords, hung from chains which are rigged to eye screws for a pretty cool pulley system. I used dog leash clips for the other end of the chain, which clip to eye screws in the lefthand wall. All in all, it shall work swimmingly. I just need to add more length to the chain as I pot up the plants into buckets, so I can put them on the floor in a more spread out pattern.

All right, I have the most recent pics of my growing operation posted on PhotoBucket now! I took several of the overall operation, and a few closeups of the transplanted seedlings, which now total 68! This afternoon, I transplanted (16) seedlings, and replanted (23) that hadn't sprouted, and when I dug them up, most were mush or moldy. In addition, I also lowered my lights a bit by adding more chain, and added more reflective barrier around the entire operation. One end is around 76 degrees, and the other is 83ish. Here is the totals for each variety, both for germination (X of X...), transplantation (marked with asterisks *), etc. Here is the list, and to note RED=all sprouted, DARK ORANGE=mostly sprouted, PLUM=some sprouted, BLACK=none sprouted, and BOLD/UNDERLINE/ITALICS=replanted:

I had to click the pictures just to check out your grow rig - well done! I like the suspension system, it looks like you gave yourself plenty of room for upward growth. And the mylar looks nice and shiny
Looks like things are progressing nicely for you up there in the arctic regions of our state!

Thanks, Andy! I felt that it would be easier in the long run to simply rig pulleys up in my room than have to worry about what to do when I needed to move them down the line. Yes, I also followed your suggestion regarding the Mylar, I just taped it to the ceiling and around the bottom of the table I have the setup on, and it's working great! I couldn't find the 400W-equivalent CFLs, so I just used 200W x 4 in each barlight, and the plants love the daylight simulation. I also got a ceramic blower heater in there now, aimed at the oscillating fan so the atmosphere is nice and balmy, hovering between 78-98 degrees, depending on how long I leave the heater going, which also has a timer for 4, 8, or 12 hours. I am still working on what will work best, since I don't want it to get too warm. I am also considering getting a small humidifier, too, so that doesn't become a concern when using the heater.

All in all, things are looking good, and a few plants are getting their 2nd set of true leaves, and have halted being leggy in favor of adding more foliage. I am now using my Botanicare plant foods, which are ProGrow Soil Formula, Cal-Mag, and Liquid Karma. ProGrow Soil is made from kelp, guano, and other organic byproducts, Liquid Karma has bioactive enzymes to promote healthy soil bacteria for optimal root growth, and Cal-Mag is what I decided upon instead of Epsom Salt. Once they are bigger, the plants will receive ProBloom, and I am considering picking up Botanicare ProSoil food, for later on this season, but I am still not entirely sure that I will use it or not.

Thanks for ducking in again, hope yours are doing well still!
Karl

Hey, Karl! You have a super grow log going here. I'm digging the careful
and thorough data recording almost as much as your perseverance in
germinating the seeds a second time! Haven't visited your pics yet cuz
I didn't want to leave the grow log! Will try to do that soon. Good luck
going forward with the grow.

i still beleive that shoplights with 2 t8 (one 4100K and one 6500K in the fixture) is the cheapest and easiyest setup to use!

and some guys use PVC tubing(and pvc joint) to make a structure which is very light and strong enoug to fix the reflective stuff

still nice setup Karl but looks painfull to set UP ;)

as long as it grows! that's ok!

Thanks, Paul!

Yeah, David, it was faintly tricky taping up the Mylar, and the pulleys were a bit tricky, as well, but now that it's all up, it's worth it. I considered some extra lighting in the 2700-4100K range, as well, but I just never bothered. I still may pick those up, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for ducking in, guys! I'll have to catch your glog, Paul!
