2018 Southern Hemisphere Grow Down-Under

Hi All

It's getting to that stage where we need to plan the next growdown.

I can supply the Aji Cito seeds, but will need to get them posted pretty quick so get voting

I also have no issue if we go with something else, but will need to order in good time as it takes ages to get to NZ

If you vote 'Something Else' post a suggested variety

Poll closes Friday 27th April

General Rules
  • GROWDOWN BEGINS 21st JUNE
  • Seeds to be started on or after start date

  • All grow styles and techniques welcome

  • Nominate your growdown plant at first weigh in
  • Weigh each harvest, and post picture of pods on scales here
  • Heaviest total weight of pods in one year from start will be the winner
  • Honour system - If you cheat the Aphid Gods will know

Another 10 pods for 26g.

2 have definite FF stings, 2 have a small dot on them which may be stings, but 6 are unstung.

I am starting to leave them on the plant to ripen now that the FF seem to be under a bit of control. I haven't seen one for a while now.

Can anyone help identify these peppers? They were sent to me labeled "Viper or Reaper" by @KAOS.

The main feature of two of the three is the red line down the stem of the plant.

That happens to a lot of my chilis. And red streaks
on the stems.  I take it as a sign of vigorous good
health as long as the color is red, not black or brown.

Not sure Tim. Mighty big leaves on some of those photos.

Don't remember having anything viper in the collection if that helps

I think it said "lucky dip" but can't really remember what of. I think they were pretty hot though. I guess I'll find out if they flower and fruit.

I'm picking a few a day as they ripen at the moment, and about 10 jalapeno per day. I'll check in occasionally.

Harvest time. My pods are getting a lot smaller again due to the heat . I can't wait for march and April weather! It's quite a PITA to harvest so many small pods without breaking branches , so I cut them off with scissors and then pick the up from the ground.

Average pod weight 1.5 grams!!

105 pods for 150 grams

Total :386 pods for   650  grams.

Looking good there. I have clipped all my pods off for years, I use one of these: Fiskars 399211-1001 6" Micro-Tip Pruner, Non-Stick Blades Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU8CP1W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_hbwzCb2B1DKSK

I have much the same scissors. My pods are 3 - 5g, but I'm getting fewer ripening than others, only 1 - 3 per day. The jalapenos have exploded though, they get more sun.

What is everyone doing with these? I freezing them to put them into a chipotle sauce to make it more spicy for some friends who like spicy sauce. I'm also going to try smoking some directly, and seeing if I can make a fairly hot yellow smoked sauce. I smoke peppers for 6 hours, they're just about dripping smoke by the time I'm done.

Here is what I do with Jalapenos about every other day from mid season on to freeze up. Load em up and eat em!

All my Citos are in the freezer, will dry and powder them later.
