And BOOM goes the gas tank!

Well this was not how we planned on spending the day when we got up this mornining, but as life happens, that's how things go.  And right off the bat, we are all OK, just the truck was lost.  It was an old truck, but still worth a couple bucks.

Evan tinkered around with an '84 Ford truck that'd been sitting in the yard for 2 years.  Plan was to get it running, sell it, and split the money.

We loaded it up with 4 plastic trash cans and a whole bunch more crap for the dump, headed up the back road and......

...started smelling something like hot plastic, then the gages blanked out, steering stopped, no brakes....dead in the road...and that's when the smoke started curling out from the engine compartment.

Oh $#IT!  and then I could see a few flames in the engine compartment.

This truck had not been on the road for 2+ years, so it didn't have any supplies.

Old man riding a lawn mower right next to the road, Evan and I are running at him yelling "HELP!  DO YOU HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER?"  He called his daughter up at the house.  She and another neighbor caming running with extingushers but we couldn't get the hood up.

Called 911 at about 10:07am and moved back-

10:12- flaming blobs dripping out of the engine compartment, moving into the cab

I think all of our carbon footprints have been used up for the next 5 years

crews on scene, getting ready to soak it-  I'd called John and he was coming over, watching the black tower of smoke, and then he saw white smoke/steam and knew the fire crews were on scene.  Another neighbor had been driving up valley on the other side of the river and could see the vehicle and smoke.

Think it'll buff out?

That 35 minutes added about 16% more grey hairs than I already had.  Neighbors helped, people helped with traffic.  Man, what a mess.  Thankfully we are fine, just wish I hadn't grabbed the mail (aka bills) out of the truck.  Maybe they would of just... gone away?

OK, maybe not~

Evan didn't have his fire gear so he couldn't help with the fire equipment, but his training was definitely helpful with composure, traffic, guiding the tow truck in. He's a rock.

I'm pretty sure it was an electrical short.  The truck had been sitting, prolly had mice or rats chewing on the wires, something sparked and off it went.

"pre-stripped, just needs primer..."

Thanks, guys, we are fine.  Nothing that a stiff drink won't take care of.

In picture #3 you can see a smoke column next to the truck.  Evan had been standing to the right of the truck and said he could see a flame vortex.  Just gives a person pause to see the incredible intense heat.  After it was put out (but not cooled down), we were picking up chunks of stuff off the pavement and pulling up chunks of the asphalt.  It was so hot it melted the road.

yep, but that was only AFTER calling 911, and husband....

Funny thing is, several of the cars that went by the wreck after the fire was out were taking pics.   It's not even their vehicle!  Whatever~

After I got off the phone with 911, I called husband.

Me- Hey Honey...
Him- Let me guess, I gotta come get you.
Me- Yea...but I didn't exactly 'break down'...it kind a caught fire.
Him- WHAT!
Me- yea, the truck caught fire.  It's pretty much fully engulfed.  Just got off the phone with 911, Fire has been toned out, just waiting on Twisp Fire to get here.
Him- Alright.  I'll be right there...

My husband is so cool!

Thanks, geeme!  I really hope that also!

Holy butts

I had a battery explode on me one time, I thought I was a goner just from the sheer decibal level of the noise.  Glad everyone's ok.

Unrelated, not even an hour ago I noticed an electrical plug dangling near one of the rear tires on my truck, never seen it before.  Turns out it was my trailer hitch light connector, which I thought I had completely gutted a few years ago.  Good thing something more serious didn't happen...

First off let me say I'm glad no one was hurt and sorry you lost out on some cash. Now for the humor.

Yes. I think it will buff out. Wet sand, rubbing compound, then polish.

Slightly used with normal wear and tear on Craigslist will do.

Bill's? What bill's? They work great for firing up the grill.

Damn lookie Lou's. Move on. Nothing to see here.

Again glad you guys are alright.

It's mostly cosmetic damage.
 OCD~

with a bit of interior water damage.  Nothing a whole new interior won't fix.

 truck can be replaced .

That's exactly right.  While it was all going down, all I was thinking about was---- Please No Wind, Keep away from the power lines.....thank God we didn't pull off the road into the driveway, right next to 2 large bushes and a huge dead tree.  That would of been sooooooo bad!
thanks, musky~
