beer Begin! : May TD: Golden Stout

Batch aborted =(

One problem after the next ...

I've poured a boo-boo calming KBS, and I'll post up the problem for science once I gotten the cleaning regiment started ...

After I shower, the post-mortem =)

I thought I'd go ahead and clean everything up, so the was ready to re-brew this week (and so I wouldn't be leaving myself any impediments to have to deal with at the front of the next brew session), but the element is shot ...

Even after cleaning it up a bunch, it's tripping the GFCI outlet at as little as 5% power, now ...

To not fuck up other shit, the ccontroller, or worse - my house - I'm going to call it quits until I've replaced the element (the one thing that came pre-installed in the kettle, of course) ...

Pics in a few ... have some doozies from the mash, LOL ...

So, I learned from fucking up sparge water long ago, hence keeping track ...

So I start mashing in the base malt, little by little ...

Does the kettle not work on the stove?
Cascading issues, as you'll see ;)

Mash pH looks good ...

Adding heat increases volume ... ffuuu ...

Bah ...

Cut the mash ...

Still rising ...

The recirc version of a stuck sparge is worst than a stuck sparge!

Okay, no biggie, remove some grains ...

9946b9e4f5b72f026da3a0983042bd06.jpg

But there's more ...

It's so milky? ...

Then it occurs to me - I didn't sift the grains from the powder/starch =( ...

Okay, keep going ...

Then It just refuses to drain through the grain bed ...

And worst, there's grain going through the pump ...

Now I'm wondering if the bazooka is installed ...

I yank the basket, and place it in the bucket ...

Okay, we're done now =( ... right? ...

GFCI trips ...

Game over.

Maybe I'll use the range, but nah, aceto risk ... ffuuuu ...

Took the kettle outside to clean ...

Mad starch.

Elements got flour burnt on, but the bazooka WAS in place, so I think I might need to increase my mill gap a bit - although that shit shouldn't be down there in all honesty ...

Clean up, take kettle in to PBW ...

Despite PBW and scrubbing, still trips the GFCI!

So, looks like I'll have to replace the element to use the indoor system again in the future ...

The bugs in the liquor was it for me, I had considered the stove, but nah ;)

Emailed Brau Supply, but I might just do small batch on the stove, and big batch outside w/ the big system ...

We'll see ...

I might scale something (out of golden promise and maris otter makes wort darker) down and get something done on the stove this week, but we'll see ...

Best part ...

f6b826dda2ff818aa38722330c2ff392.jpg

Worst part ...

Fairly bad contact dermatitis and burn from strong/hot PBW cleaning element ...

It's been an hour since I took 1200mg Ibuprofen and slathered my ham hocks with Tobradex ointment (steroid/antibiotic), but still half-fucked ...

Going to salvage Saturday w/ a pair of kobe burgers and a second KBS ...

if you ever get any chemicals on you, just use the opposite chemical to neutralize it

star san works and iodophor against PBW/caustic

heavy acids like nitric, phosphoric, can be neutralized with room temp caustic really quickly and then washdown

def a good tip. i thought it was just the water temp ... until it didn't fade, lol ...

a replacement element for my kettle is only like $70, so that's good ...

i've always shaken the flour from the grains in the BIAB bag before brewing, but it didn't occur to me to do something similar with the freshly MM'd grains ...

Does anyone mind if the latest postmark date for BD#2 is a few days later, 6/4?

I'm considering trying to rebrew tomorrow, but the existing ship date falls during the Memorial Day BBQ Contest as it exists presently ...

If it would throw anyone's timeline off, leave it be and I'll rejoin for the IPA this Summer ...
