BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

982.jpg

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

Hey Brandon,
I am with you just switched two weeks ago to organic so hopefully that help a few of the stubborn brats change focus to helping each other out and plus save me some money. How old is your grafted cherry tree did you do the grafting or purchase that way. I am also growing lettuce for the first time I got the burpee salad mix hopefully the leaves look awesome like yours. That Gooseberry look amazing going to need to pick one up at the local nursery how productive are they especially if they are first year plants? Everything looks great and hopefully maintain on track with great success for you.

Organics FTW! Hey, that overwintering project sounds awesome. Good for you man! Gonna be funny when the 5-0 bust in to find a million pepper plants NOT stinking up the whole place...lol! Just kidding but still, it would make for funny movie material. " Breaking news this evening out of WA. Feds raided a chili head grow operation yet again. Officials report that upon breaching the compound, chili addicts were scrambling to flush their Brainstrain powders and some were even injecting their hot sauce directly into their veins. Total net worth of crop estimated at 100 bucks".... :) But seriously, your gonna need to cut back a little when ya bring em in. The lights just cant compare to the sun and you may get some leaf drop as a result of not cutting back. Maybe not but more than likely. Just something to keep in mind. Glad your plants are rebounding dude!

Wow, I didn't know you were growing so much non-peppers. I really missed the boat on that this season. I went 100% peppers, and although I am super stoked with my list, I think that I should have diversified (at least the wife would have liked it more). Next time I am gonna go for it. I also decided to make the switch to Organic after seeing Rich's GLog and the results. I fed mine with tea last week and they already are showing a ton of growth and happiness. Although I would like to believe you, you know the deal. No pictures=never happened.

Hey Fernando! Yea between the results I've seen (Gurus) and the amount of money I was spending on non-organic feeding ways, organic just seemed right to me. I'm always up for trying out new ways to grow so I figured.. Why not! :) The grafted cherry tree I'm guessing is 3-4 years old? I bought it like that last year, ha, it fit in my trunk when I brought it home.. It's a good 5 feet taller than it was a year ago. Pretty cool tree. Thanks for the lettuce compliment, I've never grown lettuce until this year either, I had bad memories as a kid seeing lettuce and cabbage plants in my moms garden COVERED in slugs. So I tried container lettuce.. the slugs have yet to notice em! That gooseberry is a pretty cool plant, it grows and looks just like a japanese maple, I got mine from a nursery last year and it produced a good 500+ berries, very productive plant for sure. Thanks for the good words my friend, I hope all is well with you and your grow!

Hey Rich! Thanks man, I'm really stoked about it. I hope it works! hahaha. I'd love to see the cops show up lol, smoke these buddy, I dare ya! I'll actually be amazed if they don't pay me a visit this winter, between a buncha MHs goin and my 16HOT5s, it'll a good story to share with all of you lol. I'm going to try my best to avoid the leaf drop issue, I won't be cutting anything back to start, see how they do, and go from there. Even the floor will be insulted and reflective, smoke alarms, propane heaters incase the power goes out, fans, etc. It should be quite the op, I'd love an indoor jungle to walk through in the cold winter months. Best part? If I have an aphid problem like I did last year once they came inside, it's the garage so.... Bag-o-ladybugs. Walaa. :) I figure if people can have weed ops goin year round.. why not peppers right? I hope all is good with you dude. BTW Organic tea? Money. I can see a difference in 24hrs.

Great update on the nons! Looking forward to the update on the non...nons!

Won't be long and your best looking start is going to need a bigger trellis!

lol! That wonderful start of mine seems to be outgrowing everything I put here in!
Thanks Shane! non nons update.. Tomorrow baby!
Hope all is well with you buddy!

Hey Matt! Good to hear from ya buddy,I was actually getting on THP to send you a pm about your growtent ha. I tell you what man, if you can grow these superhots.. You can grow absolutely anything. If your just "okay" at growing supers.. You'll be a freaking expert at everything else. I've grown alot of stuff in my day and supers are by far the most difficult. So with that said and knowing that you've become quite the informed and skilled grower, if you do decide to grow a variety of veggies and fruits, you'll be amazed at how easy it is! I do know the deal.. I got a chile update tomorrow for yall :D I hope all is well with you and the family buddy, I saw your last update.. Your plants are looking great man! That tea looked great too! Glad your plants still goin strong with all the crazy weather you've been having lately.

Great to see the comeback is well underway bro. Long may the Organic Gods smile on your plants ....

Wow, things are looking great man! If anything you'll only have to start a few dozen seeds next year with the room you have to overwinter!

Pretty soon everything will be back on track and taking off!

FErtilizer!? We don't need no stinkin fertilizer! Hahaha....aint no more yellow on them babies anymore Brandon! Yes! Good stuff. Now get some fish and get hydrolyzating those bitches! :) Those plants are gonna blow your mind the way they branch out now after seeing the new structures. All those akward branch locations...mmm. Love it. Grow on!

Thanks Matt! That's the big plan really, kinda doin what guru does with his just on a larger scale. Anything I'm growing this year gets overwintered for years to come and I only start new varieties each winter which will also get OWed so basically, 5 years down the road, I want to have 1-2 plants of every variety out there that's hotter than habaneros. Pretty cool in theory.. I just need to make it happen :) What really gave me the idea was my bac spot setback. That put the "bringing them in idea" in my head since I have a very very strong feeling I'm gonna be sitting with lots of green pods come fall frost.. Then it blossomed into "Hell, why don't I just keep these SOBs growin!" Our garage was just a storage place for a buncha crap anyway. Might as well get some use out it! :)

Lol! They did green up nicely :) Unfortunately it's raining a bit much once again so looks like I'll be brewing some more tea here this week or next.. The rain taking all the nutes out of the soil is really starting to annoy me lol.. Funny though, there's a few plants that I decided simply just like being yellow. No matter how much fert I use they're like "Nope.. Not havin it. Yellows my color dude common now!" haha. Anyway, thanks again for the advice. I'm excited for our summer to finally show up so those new shoots turn into branches. Should be cool! Hope all is well with you, the fam, and the plants buddy!

Lookin great man! You really deserve some great weather, so I'll ask for some for you! No guarantees, but it can't hurt! Had a little something move through my garden over the past week too. 10 plants affected, tossed 8 giving the other 2 a shot at climbing out of it. Looks as though I either caught it in time, or the others are resistant. Fingers crossed! Been giving mine tea for about 3 weeks, and I can really tell a difference!

Really excited to watch your comeback brother, as well as the extreme makeover garage grow room edition! Keep them going Brandon!

Shane

Plants look good,Brandon; this weather just makes them look a
little less than perfect. But, you know, when the sun comes,
we're going to be rock and roll here in PacNW! I love your OW
idea. I think I might be able to eke out room for 3-4 plants some-
where in the house. Wait! You have room! I'll be bringing up 20
or so OWs to Chilefest so we can load up your garage

I'm edging closer to tea time, I just don't have the stuff yet. The fish
and mor bloom I use is organic, I guess. But the tea is probably
cheaper in the long run. When I start, I'll probably use fish emulsion,
kelp, some dry molasses in a sock, and ? What are you using, Brandon?

Okay, bro, have a good weekend. I suppose you have a similar forecast
to ours here. Mostly and partly cloudy fpr the next 10 days, but less rain
and more moderate temps. I'll take it if it actually comes to pass and the
forecast doesn't turn into November in June!

Keep up the good work, my friend; hope work, family, and all is
going well for you!

Update Time!

I'm on vaca for the next 7 days  nice to have some THP time for once! The little free time I have had I've been spending researching organic teas, soil recipes, lighting for the garage, worm castings/worm bins, etc. I could ramble some more but the pictures will tell the story better!

First ripe pod of the season.. It's a serrano but still. It was exciting! Theres atleast 100 flowers on this plant. Can't wait to see how it does with some real summer weather here in a few weeks
IMG_2208.jpg

(same plant featured in the last update) You can see the new growth is really compact, lots of mini branches at each node. Theres lots of potential with these plants we just need some freaking sunshine. Weve only had 2 days in the 70s since the last update. Most days are in the low 60s and cloudy. Not exactly explosive growth weather! lol.

First super flower since the bac spot apocalypse. It's lookin like it's gonna pod up hopefully. I'd say a good 90% of the former twigs are now full of buds like this plant :)

OW Garage coming along slowly but surely. I grew up with my mom so I have zip, zero, nooo building experience at all. I know it isn't rocket science but I'm pretty happy with it so far!

I Gotta insulate the other half of the floor, then the garage door itself. After that I'll be moving onto the expensive part of the project.. The MH HPS fixtures, heaters, smoke alarms, hang the fans, and WALAA! Should be fully operational :)

I'll post some more pics soon!
Thanks for checking this out.
Hope all is well with everyone!

Hey Shane! Thank you my friend. We do need some nice weather.. I think western WA takes the cake for the worst place to grow these plants lol. Atleast the NE gets a pretty hot summer. Weve had maybe a week and a half of weather above 70 degrees in the last 3 months, it's killin me lol.. How are the 2 plants doing that you kept goin? Thanks for good words my friend. I've been working my ass off with the garage, and the comeback, I can only hope it all pays off :) I hope all is well with you and your family buddy.

Hey Paul! Your right about the weather. I can't wait for July. Which seems to be when our summer starts around here. Thanks for the good words with my OW idea.. Honestly if I end up with room I wouldn't mind OW plants for you and anyone else at all :) From what I have watched, and researched.. Morbloom and Fish can be converted into tea and end up being more beneficial. I've spent alot of time researching teas, fish definitely being a go-to for alot of tea brewers. As for what I'm using? A bit of everything really.. Wormcastings being the base. Bone, kelp, fish, blood, and raw honey. Kinda funny really, we were out of molasses at work so I decided to go with raw honey.. I tried molasses later and I didn't see near the amount of bubbles(micro activity) as I did with raw local honey. Thanks for the good words my friend! Works good, Fams good, and everything else is good to. The weather is the only complaint I have! lol. Hope all is well with you and your family as well buddy.

Your garage looks great so far!! Can you do us all a favour? If the cops ever turn up at your house, can you please take a photo/video of their expression when they see a room of chilli peppers. Now that would be priceless.

   :hot: Apocalypse to poddage!!! Way to make them grow Brandon! Hope your weather cooperates with you from here on out. The two I am assuming you are asking about are the Fatalii and Wild Brazil...The WB is fine, and I don't think the leaf drop was related to whatever hit the Fatalii. I think its container was just getting too hot in the spot it was in. As for the Fatalii I transplanted it into a 2# container and cut it way back, it dropped all its leaves, but is starting to put out some pretty good new growth. I decided to try grafting a few supers onto the stumps...we'll see how that works out. Garage is coming along! I am trying to decide on my overwinter plan too...Stays warm enough here that I could get by with a greenhouse and a small heater/lights on the few cold nights we get. Throw in some auto vents for the warm days and I think I'll be solid. Should put out pods like Jamie all winter...I hope!

Instead of buying another air pump, air stones, tubing etc.. I remembered a buddy of mine gave me an old fish tank that was tucked way in the back of the shed.. Found an air pump from the 80's by the looks of it, still works! Found some tubing.. needed a way to get them to sink to the bottom..
Rocks.. Vines.. Waala! Looks like all the episodes of man vs wild I use to watch are paying off! lol.

As for the tea bags themselves? Old string and some left over landscape material works great!
IMG_2278.jpg

I wanted to make something that I could use to seperate the actual wormcastings from the worms and partially composted material. Going through mini piles of compost while seperating worms didn't sound very time efficient at all. So..

I started eyeballin an old bird feeder with fine mesh at the base.. Hmmm...
IMG_2229.jpg

I had some left over wood from the fence I put up, some left over reflective insulation, some old screws, and taada! Jerry rigged as all hell but it works! nothin but fine wormcastings come out the bottom. Worms, and partially composted material goes back into the worm bin :)

Brandon,
Your plants are coming back with an attitude!..............a good, badass attitude. New growth all over the place...............
I have some similar hail damaged plants trying to make a showing.

Hey, ...tea anyone???..........I can't wait to hear about the progress when that tea compost .hits the soil

The new indoor grow area is starting to take shape. You'll be pleased with the results coming from the added reflected material. I know, it does the trick

300 plants .....wow, that's nothin to sneeze at..........................ahhh.......chew,............... excuse me I have a chile-head-cold
Man that's quite a few plants........I may be hitting you up for some rare seeds.........

Have fun with your garden, another fine update!

Greg

Hey Brandon. Good to see you are fighting the good fight. I have been away for a long time being a caregiver to my father in El Paso. I see June has not been kind to us in the NW with the rains and cool weather. My plants looked the same as when I left them almost a month ago. They really want to bust out now when the warm weather comes. Once again, thank God for the greenhouse. That is where most of our pods will be ripening, I think. Glad to see you come on board with the worm farm. The tea and castings are the best things you can give the plants I believe. Combine that with the sun in July and these babies are going to EXPLODE with growth. Your perseverance is an inspiration to us fellow frustrated chile growers in Western Washington.

Been using the tea for about 3 weeks...and it make a HUGE difference, especially on the newly transplanted or recovering ones. The ingrounds exploded within about 3 days of the first dose. I mix mine down to about half strength then add some 1/2 strength nutes to top it off. Hit my containers with it the first time this weekend, hopefully I will see big results in short order...you've been super busy! Keep it up man. All this time off your plants are gonna really start to kick in!
