BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

982.jpg

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

Brandon. That really sucks. My stomach is tight

But...
Your skills are high and if there is anyone that can make them rebound fast it is you.

I'm really sorry to hear the bad news Brandon. Don't give up. Back in 2007, I had a disaster where my large super hot plants basically lost all their leaves due to a very poor hardening off situation and surprise weather. They were literally "sticks' in the ground. I thought i was done for. Well, fast forward three months and I had monster plants with more pods then I ever had. :) Never say never. I hope you make a stunning recovery. Best of luck.

Chris

Brandon, my plants basically look like yours now. Have you gotten some new growth yet? I'm about as freaked by the whole situation as I can be.

Hey Brandon, how you and the plants holdin up? Are they going to pull through? Did you get to them fast enough? A lot of us was watching this in agony hoping for some good news. I'm sure your even busier now than before trying to do what you can to aid the plants. Your a skilled grower, I'm sure they'll be ok.
Aaron

WOW!

Talk about a support group! Thank you all so much for the support. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. I've been so busy that I haven't checked out anything but a few pm's since everything went down.. Ha, I was all excited for summer to start growing but I tell you what, I sure miss the extra time I had to spend talking to all of you over the winter, I'm having THP withdrawls lately lol.. Anyway, I checked out my glog this morning for the first time in over a week and saw everybody's support and boy did it put a smile on my face. Thank you all very much once again! I thought to myself, man.. when I get home from work today I need to go outside, haul some plants in and take some indoor pictures and update everyone! It's the least I could do after the support you've all thrown my way! Believe it or not.. I have...

GOOD NEWS! :woohoo:   :D

2 overwintered nagas couldn't seem to shake the problem so I had to put them down.. But! All of the other overwinters, and all 250 1st years have all been making a recovery and throwing out new shoots where the leaves use to be! Yeah Baby! I haven't seen a spot in about a week.. I ended up having to go back over ALL the plants and pick off ALL of the leaves that weren't originally picked because they, a day later, started showing signs of the infection. My cucs, tomatos, pumpkins, zucs, squash, all got tossed and replaced with new. That bacteria spot was nuts.. Took over everything at my work, we had to replace EVERYTHING. We got credit for everything but still.. Alot of unhappy customers piled in with tomato plants for a week or so..

I sprayed with that bonide solution once a week since we've had dry and sunny weather for a week and half. The rain showed up once again a few days ago but I think that week of sunshine and 70degree days really helped the recovery process and definitely slowed the infection and gave me a chance to beat back the problem, I feel like I'm finally playing offense which is a really really REALLY good feeling.

In other plant news..
Yes.. More problems have happened. lol.

I noticed that one of my perrenial flowers was abso-f'n-lutely infested with aphids. I've been paying so much attention to the chile issue that I turned a blind eye to the healthy plants and MAN did those aphids take advantage of my blind eye. I have NEVER seen aphids as big as the ones on this plant some were literally the size of tic-tacs! So nasty! After cursing at them while I mixed some more bonide spray I lit them up from all sides for a good 10 minutes, by the time I was done I had hundreds of big ass dead aphids on my arms. It was pretty freaking disgusting to say the least.

A 1/4 of my gooseberry bush looked like it went through a paper shredder the other day and I'm thinking really?! what now.. A closer look, tons of tiny catapillar lookin bugs that I have never seen in my 25 years living here.. Same deal.. Cursed at em.. Loaded myself up with some more bonide spray and lit them up as well.

We live next to a forest.. You damn bugs really can't find something in there to chew on?! Does it reallllllly have to be my garden?! lol.. Bastards.

Alright alright. I'll shut up now. Picture time.
So at night, taking pictures indoors with my camera isn't a great idea but after seeing all the support, updating all of you seemed alot more important than quality pictures

Keep in mind.. A week and a half ago every plant in my yard was completely leaf-less. Zip, none, notta, nothin.

Thanks again for all the great support you've all thrown my way!
I REALLY hope this is the last big problem that is thrown my way. I think when the universe heard me say " I want a challenge this year " They took me wayyyyy too seriously lol.

Thanks for watching everyone. I hope all is well with everybody! Now that all my problems are hopefully fixed I hope to get some time to catch up on all the glogs:)

"Oh man Brandon, that awful Everything was looking great, then this comes your way. At least you had the know how to to get it under control, and awesome that Guru got to help you figure out what to do.
Hope they come thru man"

Thanks for the support Aaron. I really appreciate it. Guru's tip with that bonide spray last season has helped me through alot of problems, along with the man himself hah. I hope everythings going well for you dude!

PIC 1
"Sorry to see that Brandon, you had no way to prevent that since the tomatoes looked healthy.
It does spread like wildfire. It could have originally started from some infected soil that was used when the nursery potted up. I'm surprised it moved through the containers . It would make more sense if they were bedded or in the ground.
That's the main reason I don't start planting in the raised beds to early even though the day temps are warm............its the consistant moist cooler soil temp thats susceptible to blights and viruses.
I hope to see your plants regain growth..............they may be set back for awile though , but like you said its only May and there's along growing season ahead.
Keeping my fingers crossed for a full plant recovery
Greg"

Hey Greg! Man it feels like forever since weve talked.. I hope everything is going well for you buddy. Thank you for the support. I think your right.. It has and will set me back for now but once the new growth is mature enough to pump out flowers.. It's gonna be pod city! (hopefully) :) Thanks again man.

coheed196
"That sucks big time, i hope everything works out for you."

Thanks for the support coheed. I needed it trust me!

PaulG
"Oh, man, I felt like crying when I saw the news; I can't imagine
how you must have felt. You are a real zen master to maintain
a positive attitude through that. Here's all the positive energy I
can muster for a speedy and overwhelming recovery for your
plants (and you!)
If there is any way i can help, let me know. Fortunately, they have
healthy root systems, so should be able to rebound - those that
come back will do so with a vengeance, I'm sure!

Good luck, Brandon..."

Paul! Man it feels like forever since I've talked to you as well. First off thank you and thank you again for the care and support you sent my way. That positive attitude took everything I had trust me, along with not crying about it.. It was definitely an emotionally draining week for me. The plant problem felt like a shot in the foot and a financial deal came up a day later that also felt like taking another shot to the foot.. but here a week and a half later, it's easy to be happy :) That's why I've taught myself to stay positive.. chances are.. are week from now things will be good once again! Thanks again for the replies buddy. I hope all is well with you.

Sethsquatch
"Sorry to see that Brandon. I'm rooting for a full recovery (ha). You've come to far for them to quit on you now."

Thanks Seth! you have no idea how much I appreciate the support. This is why THP is the only social networking site I'm a member of! lol..

chileaddict
"Hang tough Brandon. You will find out what it takes to get a decent harvest, and those little devils will taste even better. I found one leaf on one plant this morning that looked like b. leaf spot and immediately removed it. Keep up the hard work and excellent documentation buddy. "

Thank you very very much for the support Richard. I hope all is well with you buddy. I decided that I might just try to overwinter all 250 of em this year lol. So either way, as long as their alive.. They're part of the family now! haha. How are all your plants doing? Any pics? I'd love to see em man! Hope your family and the new addition are all doing well. My wife's overdue for baby pics if you have any. haha :)

Just mind your watering, keep pruning, keep watching those nodes and keep that surface ph low with sulphur. You'll be a bush master soon enough

I know I've thanked you 15 times atleast. but! thanks again buddy!

Man, sorry to hear about that... If you need any seeds, let me know and I can send you some... I don't have 2000+ of anything of course, but what I have I'll share.

Hey jsschrstrcks! Thank you so much for the seed offer, I freaking love this community. You couldn't pay me to be a member of Facebook after knowing the group of guys n gals here on THP! I will keep you in mind for seeds if something once again happens to me and I lose everything lol.. If I don't though.. Please keep me in mind if I get a harvest. I'd love to send seeds your way man. Thanks for the support.

If there is anyone that I know that can come back from this, it is you. Im rootin for ya, but you wont need it. Everything will be back before ya know it!

Thanks Matt! I really appreciate it bud. Hah.. Weve both been through so many obstacles this year already. It's not even freaking summer yet! I just hope you and I have a good harvest. We both deserve it man! I hope things are going well for you and your family. Thanks for the support dude.

Brandon...I almost cried when I saw this. Literally. Stay positive and keep us posted brother. Wish there was something I could do.

Shane.. Your message almost made me cry! It's so nice to be surrounded by such a great group of people.. It's rare to find people that care about anything that doesn't have to do with them these days. To see people post the "almost cried" comments really hit home for me. I picked the right forum to be a member of :) If I ever go to cali, or you to WA, we definitely have to hang out and have a few beers together. I hope all is well with you and your family bud.

Here I was thinking my season has been pretty bad, what happened to your plants suck big time

Hey Slash. Thanks for the reply man. I just hope that I can make a good recovery, get a harvest, and show everyone else that might end up being in the situation I'm in that there is hope, not to give up, and push through. Thanks for the support.

Brandon. That really sucks. My stomach is tight

But...
Your skills are high and if there is anyone that can make them rebound fast it is you.

Jamie! Man other than the PMs I've replied to, I did catch up on your glog... your videos!? dude. your plants are freaking amazing!! I can only hope to have plants like that someday! beautiful! Your daughter is super cute too, glad she got her grape juice lol. Thank you very much for the support, it really helped me through all this. I hope all is well with you and family buddy.

I'm really sorry to hear the bad news Brandon. Don't give up. Back in 2007, I had a disaster where my large super hot plants basically lost all their leaves due to a very poor hardening off situation and surprise weather. I hope you make a stunning recovery. Best of luck.

Chris

Hey Chris! Man I gotta tell ya, it was sure nice to read about your 2007 disaster. Even though I'm feeling good about my plants as they are now.. hearing that story coming from you made me feel even better. Honestly, I would obviously love pods and seeds etc.. But I would be fine with living plants.. I just don't wanna kill anything. If worse comes to worse atleast I have plants overwintered for next year ya know? The trinidad viper X purple bhut is coming back strong, along with all the others I got from ya :) Thank you very very much for the good luck and kind words. Means alot my friend. I hope all is well with you my friend.

Brandon, my plants basically look like yours now. Have you gotten some new growth yet? I'm about as freaked by the whole situation as I can be.

Seth! I hope my updated pictures gave you some relief buddy. I was absolutely freaking out a week 1/2 ago.. I'm feeling good now.. Keep in mind.. You have better growing conditions for these plants than I do! I'm sure your plants will recover like mine. Stay postive buddy, as hard as it is. Please keep me posted as well if you have the time.. I don't know what your using as an "aid" to the problem, if it's working or not, but if you haven't heard about it.. Bonides citrus fruit and nut orchard spray will fix the problem.. Trust me. It's like an all in one spray. Fungus, bugs, you name it. Hope all is well man. I did get a chance to see your raised beds and veggie garden.. They look beautiful man! Keep up the great work!

Aaron

Hey Aaron. Thanks for the message buddy, yours really hit home too. Thank you for caring and wondering. Really nice to know people care :) Looking like everything is going to pull through just fine. When it comes to a harvest I think the late-spring and summer weather are going to decide that. According to our local farmers the summer is supposed to be HOT so if that's the case I think I'll be alright. Thanks for the hopes of good news. I hope I delievered! As for being busy, yes, It's our rock-n-roll time of year at work and it's my rock-n-roll time of year in the garden so it's a one two punch on time for me but I wouldn't change a thing. I live for this time of year! I just miss all of you on THP! I hope all is going well for you and the rest of the family. Thanks again for the support my friend.

Just more good vibes, my friend.

Thank you my friend, I need em!

Brandon that is awesome recovering man hopefully everything continues to improve Good Luck through the rest of the season and no more issues arise  , but it provided me with a learning experience as well others in the forum. Thank you
Fernando

Hey BigC, how long did it take to post that? GREAT NEWS FROM YOU! AWESOME! :woohoo:   Parts of your post was touching, parts were sad (putting down the Nagas), and some was funny. It was like a soap for chileheads! :).

But in all seriousness, the plants in the picture have MAD leaves popping from the nodes! I'm getting excited for you bro. That's awesome! Deserving of giving up one of my likes (long story, there's a thread Seth started and it pilled into the burger thread) can't wait for your next update, keep working hard bro!
:)
Aaron

Man Brandon. I am so happy for you right now. I've been using some copper spray mix but I will definitely be checking into the bonide. I am leaving town for almost a week tomorrow so I can stop being so "attentive and loving" and let them do their thing. Scovie said I was like Lenny from Mice and Men. So true. Loving them to death.

But on a side note, your post is what made me take action and probably saved my plants. So thanks. Hopefully I'll get an update done this morning... Lots of stuff to do today. But, on a positive note, I am actually going to get to hang out with the man, the myth, the legend, Guru on Thursday. So my plants will probably just heal themselves from sheer Guru energy. :onfire:

Thanks again for the update. You made my day!

Well hopefully nothing bad happens, but my offer stands! I'm with ya, this is a great place to be a part of. Came for the pepper-lore, stayed for the people :).

A little motivation for you...I had several plants that looked like this...

of my problem childred all but this Chocolate Habanero went to new homes...

This is the same plant after just a couple weeks...
P1010198.jpg

Its been almost a month since this pic...and it is in the ground covered in flowers! Will post a pic once I get back home on Friday.

Won't be long and you'll be cooking with gas again! Glad they are recovering brother...you had me pretty bummed out. I think your glog was the very first one I read on this site. With the closet door propped open but tied closed. You were largely responsible for me sticking around on here. Spicy Chicken was another and his glog turned into a disaster around the same time as yours. Can't wait to see you get all your plants looking up to your high standards and throwing out pods. I know how much time, effort and love went into your plants, not to mention the $$$...You're well on your way back brother!

Keep us posted!
Shane

Brandon, so how much fungus, bacterial and viral literature have you been reading since this happened? Lol first time it got me I literally became sick to my stomach and I almost ripped all the stalks out of the ground. Still want to do that this year between the aphids, spot, caterpillars, and ph issues early on, but that's the thing. If you push through and work even harder, the pepper gods will reward you :)

Holy stinking cow Brandon! I haven't looked at your glog since you did your video update and I must say your video was beautiful!!!! Then I keep reading on and all hell breaks loose I literally cried. Then I got to seeing that things are getting better. So relieved for you. Super impressed with the fact that a western Washington grower is having so much success! KUDOS MAN KUDOS!!!!!! Which nursery/produce place do you work for? I am glad you seemed to figure out how to grow in our screwed up Washington climate. Hope your family is well. :)

Best news I've heard all week, Brandon! The fact that you had
healthy robust plants saved the farm. The re-growth looks just
fabulous! Now we can all breath easier and look forward to some
over the top updates from your neck of the woods real soon!

Good luck and good growing, my friend!

One can never use enough motivation (this is also gonna get posted in Seth's GLog).

I was doin my morning ritual this morning, you know, coffee, oatmeal, and THP, and came across a thread that made me think of you two guys. Mitch in OZ had an aphid problem, but that is neither here nor there. I am sure you will see something very familiar with this first 2 photos.

Chile news..
Plants are doin just fine and coming back nicely. Even with the lack of sunshine.
I started a compost pile in hopes to make some compost tea for my plants.
I brewed my first batch of homemade tea and I can already see the difference

Remember when I said... "I'm going to try my luck at the biggest overwinter op in chile history"
Well now that my plants are on "auto pilot" for now I took the time free to start the process.. 75% of my entire garage is covered in reflective insulation.

I'll post pics soon. I plan on insulating the garage door, putting heaters in, MH Bulbs.. The works. I'd like to keep them growing all year long.. Kinda like Jamie :)

My hopes is to have 5-9ft tall plants come plant out next year. Wish me luck!

Brandon that is awesome recovering man hopefully everything continues to improve Good Luck through the rest of the season and no more issues arise , but it provided me with a learning experience as well others in the forum. Thank you
Fernando

Hey Fernando! Thanks for the good words man. I'll be amazed if I don't have another issue this season, I'll be ready for it though trust me lol. No need to thank me dude, I'm just happy it was a learning experience for you and others. I hope all is good with you my friend, I saw your glog the other day.. I try to stay away from it though cause it just makes me jealous! lol. Everythings lookin great man!

How long did that take to post? TOO long! Just like this post! My glog has become the chile soap opera.. That's some funny stuff lol. Thanks for the good words buddy! I hope yours are making a comeback and all is well with the family

Hey Seth! Dude, checked out your glog before work today.. Things are lookin good man! Love your 2 garden spaces. Your plants didn't get hit as bad as mine either.. You'll be good to go in no time! I started using the copper mix as well as the sulphur stuff.. I noticed a small few were getting the bac spot once again on the newer leaves. Figured it wouldn't hurt. Ha, that lenny and mice deal cracked me up! I'm glad my post helped you and others out.. We all live and learn! Sounds like you and Guru had some fun. So tell me.. did you find out what kind of synthetic herion he feeds his plants? ;) Keep me posted buddy on your garden. I hope all is well with you and your family!

Well hopefully nothing bad happens, but my offer stands! I'm with ya, this is a great place to be a part of. Came for the pepper-lore, stayed for the people.

Thanks man. I really really appreciate it. Speaking of offers.. If I can get these things to produce.. Scratch that.. I've been saying that all year and look at what has happened.. Time for confidence! WHEN, I get these plants to produce, I'd love to send you a care package if you'd like :) Hope all is good with you buddy.

A little motivation for you...I had several plants that looked like this...
of my problem childred all but this Chocolate Habanero went to new homes...
This is the same plant after just a couple weeks...
Shane

Thanks for the "MO" and good words Shane! I appreciate it man! Largely responsible for sticking around? WOW. Talk about flattering! Thank you thank you :) I'm glad you stuck around man, what would THP be without you?? Haha I remember that lovely closet door prop picture.. Feels like ages ago yet it's only been a few months. Crazy how time flies. I heard about spicy chickens deal.. I wish I didn't. A perfect example of why I don't do this for a living, I couldn't imagine this being my only income and having something horrible happen. I hope all is well with you buddy. Thanks for always being there to check up on things, the support, and all that good stuff! Trust me, it doesn't go unnoticed! BTW, I hope you had a good weekend buddy, just thought I'd say thank you for your service, our family appreciates it :)

If you push through and work even harder, the pepper gods will reward you

Rich, as you already know, I've spent way too much time reading up on that stuff lol. I'm glad you got all your issues worked out. Not that I doubted you wouldn't or anything ha. I'm hoping the pepper gods keep me in mind this summer. Hope all is good with you bro and your trees, I mean.. your pepper plants.. and your family of course :)

Well long time no talk! Glad you stopped by, sorry I made you cry, and I'm happy you were relieved in the end haha :) There should be a disclaimer when it comes to growing supers in western wa.. Letting you know that this hobby WILL make you hate the climate, wish you lived elsewhere, and hate all the rain even more. lol.. It's KILLIN me lately. Now I'm battling nute issues because the rain has drained all the nutes out of the soil, It's hard to feed your plants when the soil is wet all the damn time! Thanks for the kind words. Oh btw.. I work at H&L Produce in Lakewood. I hope you and the fam are all doing well!

Best news I've heard all week, Brandon! The fact that you had
healthy robust plants saved the farm. The re-growth looks just
fabulous! Now we can all breath easier and look forward to some
over the top updates from your neck of the woods real soon!
Good luck and good growing, my friend!

Hey Paul! Thanks for the good words dude, I'm just happy they didn't all die. I would have been devastated. Unfortunately the weather has been pretty overcast lately.. No sun=no over the tops updates from brandon for awhile lol.. Junes knockin on the door though, Hoping for a hot summer! for the both of us! I hope all is well with you my friend. Thanks again for checkin up on things!

I am sure you will see something very familiar with this first 2 photos.
cut back fatali
cut back butch t
And now for the big finish!
recovered butch t (left) and fatalia (right)
Here's his log. Got a few cool observations from his season in OZ. http://thehotpepper....-pics-included/
Happy Growing!
