BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

982.jpg

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

Great harvest brother soon you will need buckets. I am going to do LED for my outdoor winter setup.

I hope so buddy! "outdoor winter setup" Phhhhht. Whatever man. lol, kidding. You know I'm jealous. Looking forward to seeing that!

Great pod pics Brandon. The dice in the pics was a perfect idea. I have quite a few small pods too. They can really light you up just like the big boys.

Hey Richard! Thanks buddy. I kept thinking about what to use for size comparison and one day I saw dice in our "junk" box and walaa! lol.. Your right about the smaller ones, can't let the size fool you, I've made that mistake before making soup.. I added a good 12 small pods thinking they'd be less heat because of size. I could barly eat the soup lol. Thanks for stopping by man!

Great pics! That "7 Orange" - is that a medium heat? Like below habanero, but good flavor? It just looks very similar to something I grew that was supposed to be scotch bonnets, but ended up being those and grew about a million of them per plant. Just wondering if its the same thing and what that pepper really is.

Hey buddy! Thank you. That 7 Orange is a bit above orange habanero heat. Probably equal to the hotter red varieties I've tried. Very fruity, citrusy, and pungent. As for what the pepper really is, they do look like the 7pod oranges going around on Judy and Grants website just smaller. It's unstable for sure, I have another plant from the same seed pack that has the texture of a brain strain, and looks alot more like superhot 7 should look. I really hope they ripen to orange, I always invision 7pods being bumpy and blow your face off hot so IMO that would be a much better candidate to be called a 7Pod Orange.. We'll see!

Glad to see you getting a few pulls! Great pics by the way...Can't wait to see the 2 car tanning bed!

Thanks Shane! You have no idea how much each little harvest makes me smile lol. Been a long time coming. lol, I'll hopefully have some pictures of the tanning bed soon. I just wish I left room for a lawn chair! Maybe I'll hang a hammock from the ceiling. Ha!

Sadly, this is more true than most would think. Dont go to the fema camps.

I had to look that up to see what you were talking about. I wish I hadn't, that's some crazy crap going on. Hope all is well with you Rich.

Brandon, empty your message box and send me your addy, bud!

Really Paul...... There ya were circling my house in a blackhawk planning your chile heist and you forget to write down my address? Come on man.. You gotta plan these things!

I like the harvest photos, they're not dicey at all. Cool shot of the ballasts with the light hood in the reflection. It will be interesting to see some full grown plants under those 1000w'ers......a jungle waiting to happen.

Hey Greg! Hows things? I got around to checking out your OW process, very cool! No freaking wonder you don't have any bug problems! lol.

That jungle will be in full swing by the end of the day today  My Wife's gonna love me making 150 trips through the house with full grown plants lol. Hope all is well with you bud.

UPDATE.

Today's the day. Time to bring the plants in! We don't have any freezing temps forcasted yet but we are dipping into the high 30s some nights. The garage without the heater or lights running is staying at a good 60 at night so I figured I might as well go ahead and pull the plug, besides, pods don't like to ripen when its 50 during the day and 35-40 at night lol.

To prep for the move today, I spent some time yesterday going around to each plant, picking off any old leaves, leaves with possible bac spot, and ripe pods.

A few pics from the last outdoor harvest

I've been excited about this plant all year. The pods are pretty freaking cool if you ask me.
I left this pod on the plant for a good week and a half and it was held the 2-tone black and red color, freaking cool right?? I'm gonna leave the pod on my counter for another week to be sure it won't turn completely red.

These are also pretty cool. I've looked up Yellow Bhut pictures to compare they do look similar but also different IMO.. Any input would be appreciated. They're not as big as yellow bhuts and the heat/flavor is different. This guy and the Yellow Butch T are by far the 2 hottest yellow superhots I've tried. One of the pods ripening that gets full sun(still on the plant) is almost completely Orange, the largest pod in the picture never saw any sunshine for comparison. Pretty neat.

Hey guy! Hope your move is successful. 150 plants?
Good Lord, man. Your wife is an angel!

Nice late (early?) harvest there, my friend. That should
leave you enough heat until your indoor plants start cranking along.
They should thrive in your garage for awhile even w/o being heated.

I notice that the number up on the die matches the number of pods
sometimes, and sometimes not. What gives? Let's try for a little
consistency, OK?

Paul! It was successful, just finished as a matter of fact. As I was moving in the last 20 plants lightning hit the back field and the loudest thunder I've ever heard shook our house followed by pouring down rain. Brought em in at a good time! :) I have the lights on now and it's 72 in there, 48 outside, no heater. I'd like to hold off as long as I can before I add even more watts to our electric bill lol. Paul, you're right. I need to stop slackin. Next harvest all the dice will match the number of pods, even if I need more dice! You have my word!

UPDATE.

I finally got around to some garage-grow pictures. I still have some stuff to finish up but for the most part, it was ready for the move. Little bit of insulating left, little bit for flooring left and then it should be fully operational. It's nothing professional, but I hope it will do the job. I have a plan A B C D and F for this operation incase anything goes wrong lol..

When I overwintered 15 plants last year in my south facing window... I learned alot of things.. One thing that stood out that I will never forget. YOU WILL SEE APHIDS. You can go all year without seeing a single one and for some reason, the second you bring your plants inside, they show. According to a few sources, they lay eggs in the soil. Expect them, prepare for them, and kill em. It took me 2 months to finally be aphid free last year with those 15 plants I mentioned. So with 150, I know I'm asking for a battle. I ordered 2 bags of 1500 lady bugs that should be here in a week or so. Aphids don't show up until the week 1 week 2 mark. I'm actually planning on letting the aphids hatch and thrive for a few days. No sense in letting lady bugs that have been sitting in a bag for awhile crawl around with nothing to eat.

Along with many other bugs, I know I brought in quite a few spiders that I will also be over-wintering. Lucky spiders for sure lol. They will take care of any fungus gnats or other pests of the sorts I'm hoping. If I see any spiders outside in the next 2 weeks before the frost, I plan on bringing them in. My own little chile eco system. lol.

The worst outcome in my eyes will be the green pods will ripen and I'll have to cut back all of the plants and roots and re-pot into 2 gal containers for next years grow. Only way that's going to happen is insect problems, bac problems, anything of that sort. No matter what I'm not letting these plants die, and I'll have quite the OW'd army.

So to start... I have to fit 150 plants...

DAMN Cedar! You have got an awesome setup. I love your go big or go home approach. I will remember what you said and keep an eye out for them der dang aphids. I'm planning on bringing a few in myself....but I don't know if I'm going to be able to keep any of the leaves anyway...since you kidnapped the sun and all.

You've got some really cool pods, I really like the first one TSX....umm the other pepper that I can't remember. It's the small, yellow, pointed one. I really like it.

I hope your overwinter project is a smashing success!

Brandon, your garage is too awesome, but you didn't leave
room for any of my plants  Awesome that the downpour
waited until you were almost done; now that's cooperation!

Way to go bud, you will be the only PNWer continuing with a
glog throug the late fall and winter! Can't wait for your updates
while I'm staring at empty pots and seeds in baggies/jars! I will
have the plants in the greenhouse gimping along for a while, but
am not sure how this will turn out. First time I've put pepps in the
greenhouse to try to extend their season. I need to upgrade my
germination set-up for next January. It was a bummer having my
workbench out of commission for three months!

Are you going to sleep in there every night? Where's the other
lounge chair for your honey?? I'll bet you can smell the peppers
in there!

I'll be back to check out your progress, my friend! Have a good
week!

LMFAOOOO. If you keep napping in there your going to turn as dark as me

................... :D .....................

Brandon like I said in the pm......................clever update!

I forgot to mention, you can grow some wicked leaf lettuce and herbs under HPS...

Thanks man! My go big or go home approach is my approach with everything in life, it can be a good thing, and sometimes a bad thing lol. lmao, I'll be glad to SFRB some sunshine your way if you need it ;) I took off all of my leaves last year and the bastiges still showed up. If only they we beneficial right? lol. Thanks for the pod compliments. Still many more to photograph before the years over! Thanks for the good words dude. I appreicate it.

Hope things are good with you!

Hey Paul! First off, THANK YOU for the care package my friend!! My Wife called me today at work and told me a package showed up from you and for the rest of the day I couldn't wait to go home and check out the goods! I think one of the first convos we ever had was along the lines of sending each other some not so hots for superhots, that has become a reality buddy! I have a few packages heading out this Monday :D

Man I tell you what, the weather really did seem like it was waiting for me. Quite the blessing, since the bring-in it was has been pouring, windy, and thunderstorms. I woke up this morning, looked outside and thought to myself "man, I really did bring them in at the right time, down to the minute!" I'm the only one continuing to grow in the PNW eh? Well I can promise you I'll keep it interesting for everyone :D I can't take a break, gotta keep myself on my toes for next years grow lol. Now the trick is to not start my seeds for 3 months.. That's gonna be tough with the space I have now lol. I look forward to checking in on your greenhouse grow, my neighbor keeps cacti and other very sensitive to cold plants in hers and they do great every year, you should be set like cement!

My very pasty Wife wanted me to tell you that there's no lawn chair for her because she would look like an overcooked lobster tail if she stayed in there longer than 10 minutes lol. The space does have a pepper odor. It's a rainforest/superhot aroma for sure. I went in there after work today for 10 minutes and was dripping sweat. Crazy warm in there. Can't wait to try the pods buddy, I'll keep you posted. Thank you again :)

Awesome, Brandon! I had to show your pictures to my wife to let her see I'm not that silly when putting all my plants on the attic Great job!

Thanks buddy! That's what I'm here for! When everyone's significant others start to think you might be taking it a little too far.. Maybe going a little too crazy? Show them my glog. They'll lighten up I'm sure. lol. Hope all is well with you brother.

Hey Brandon, now that the rains have started, you could charge for sessions in the sun room. What is the hottest the temp in there so far?

Now THAT.. is a money making idea. lol. So far, today was the first day the lights were on all day, after work I checked out the temps (9pm) 48 outside... 86 in the garage. Freaking smokin! I thought I'd have problems keeping the garage warm.. Ha, I went out and bought a nice heater and everything. Seeing that I've yet to open the box, I'm wondering if I'm even going to need it now! Those lights put out some serious heat. I wouldn't be able to run them indoors without some sort of cooling. Thanks for stopping by buddy.

LMFAOOOO. If you keep napping in there your going to turn as dark as me

Lmao. I'm sure I'll be giving you a run for your money in the coming months Sanarda! It's gonna be a bit patchy though. lol.

Brandon like I said in the pm......................clever update!

I forgot to mention, you can grow some wicked leaf lettuce and herbs under HPS...

Greg!
:shh: !!!
My Wife might read this.. Lettuce=less room for pepper starts. Not in my book!

Wow you always create awesome setups from germination room to indoor grow nothing but the best. In no time you will have a jungle with some great poddage.

Thanks Fernando! I appreciate the compliment man, I really have no experience with any of the building/growroom aspect of this hobby. I just do alot of research, wing it, and hope it works out for the best lol. This method does work though.. ha! They've only been in there for a day 1/2 and pods are ripening, and fast. My first big harvest should be soon I think. I appreciate you always stopping by brother, thank you! Hope all is well with you man.

Great job Brandon! Will be watching this! Thinking about a smaller version of this vice a GH setup for my starts next season. That way I don't have to put them out with nasties until they're a little more mature. Will be taking notes off here as you learn lessons for me!!!

Shane - "smaller version of this vice"

Yes, growing peppers inside easily borders on that

Glad the pods arrived; hope they are in good shape!
If the labels fell off, let me know and I can help you i.d. the pods.

That's awesome that you are getting such fast results in the grow room!
Now you will be really busy! Looking forward to some great pod shots. bro.

That is one cool damn garage! :) Love it. Love the Trinidad Purple x Naga Viper too. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts concerning taste/heat. :)

I could picture a few law enforcement authorities visiting that place for sure. lol.

Chris

Man that's crazy... and awesome! Well done. I love going all the way on the ladybug army too. Now for some sort of water misting set up and an mp3 player on a loop playing tropical rain forest sounds and I think you're all set.

Thanks Shane! That's my goal with this whole set up too, I hope to have bigger plants come hardening off time. We'll see how it goes! I hope the lessons I learn for you to take notes on aren't too extreme lol. Hope all is well buddy.

Really busy indeed brother! I'm all sorts of excited about it. They've been in the garage for 3 days and there's soooo many ripe pods out there already, crazy what some warm temps will do. At this rate I'm going to be done harvesting in 2-3 weeks lol.

Hey Chris! Thanks buddy. I didn't want to try it just yet and wanted to see if it turned all red, so far it remains 2 toned. Very cool. If any enforcement folks do show, you know I'll be sure to take some pictures :D lol.

Man that's crazy... and awesome! Well done. I love going all the way on the ladybug army too. Now for some sort of water misting set up and an mp3 player on a loop playing tropical rain forest sounds and I think you're all set.

Thanks man! Your watermisting/mp3 loop comment had me considering it... lol. Thanks for stopping by buddy, I hope all is well with you and the fam. :)

Holy cow! I think I can hear your electric meter spinning from here! You definitely took it to another level Brandon, too cool buddy.

lmao, I hope it's not spinning that fast! I'll be comparing the bills to last year, I hope it isn't too intense. I was running 1800 watts last year and didn't see a difference in the bill so we shall see. I'm hoping if anything, it's minor. The heater is 1200 watts so I'm going to hold off as long as I can before runnin that bad bay. I noticed already that it does keep our house warmer, even with the door shut, hopefully it helps out more than it does bill damage lol. Thanks for stopping by buddy. Good to hear from you!

Now were talkin!
Update...

I probably started the earliest, and I'm definitely harvesting last lol.. What A season it has been for me. A learning experience for sure, lots of ups, lots of downs. As Aaron said it, my season has definitely been the soap opera of glogs. lol. I gotta say, now that I'm toppin things off this season, I learned more this year than I did in my entire highschool career lol. The ups, the downs, were all worth it. This grow kept me busy to say the least, and I love that. That's why I OW, I can't NOT have something to do outside of my day job lol.. I can't wait to take on next year with the knowledge/experience I have now. It should be interesting, with the setbacks I had this year, I'm planning on coming back with a vengeance :hell:

One more thing... NOOOOO Tomato plants next year! I don't think I'll ever look at a tomato start the same way ever again. lol.. Unless I start them myself :)

With the plants in 80+ temps, I honestly have not been able to keep up with the harvesting. I literally have been picking pods every day for atleast 1-2hrs a day. The tight cluster of plants in the garage doesn't make it easy. Fine with me though, every pod I pick brings a smile to my face trust me lol.

So.. here's my kitchen table as of today...

Untitled-23.jpg

I also have a few care packages heading out today :D
And they are PACKED full. I had trouble closing them lol.
IMG_3700.jpg

I'll post some detailed pod pics later today.
Hope all is well with everyone!
