Bodeen's 2013 Grow _-_ Love at First Sting

Not actually starting this yet. Just trying to get my thoughts together on what and how many I will be planting of everything. There is the possibility that there will be no cows here next year and the pastures will be made into corn fields. This would mean the barn lot will be free and empty. It grows some of the best grass on the farm and the barn does have a well and a pump already there. Could it be garden number 3??? Also contemplating enlarging the back garden again.

I will probably have to do that Spice.

Bonnie, haven't really done much herb growing. Just thinking about things I can use fresh and can dry. Basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, and would like to do some mint as I hear it adds nice flavor to a lot of dishes. Haven't dug into the details too much.

You've got to plant Parsley and Summer Savory too! Save yourself a lot of aggravation with the Parsley though, and buy the plants already started... If you eat a lot of Mexican food, you might want to try Epizote as well.

Herbs are easy to grow and you can propagate them with cuttings easily.

Nice selection of varieties, Bo!

The basil will have to be resown each year, very frost sensitive, but the other herbs you mentioned are perennials. Well, I say that, but the rosemary is actually only hardy to about 20 degrees, so it has to be overwintered indoors in your area. I usually kill it before spring. :mope:

With the mints, they are pretty invasive, and it is usually recommended to grow them in a container to keep them from taking over.

Thyme is my absolute favorite herb fresh, or freshly dried. Never thought much of it when I used to buy it at the store. The first time I grew it, I was amazed at the wonderful smell and flavor!

If you decide to grow chives, or garlic chives, be sure to cut the dead flowers off before it goes to seed, or you will have a bazillion chive plants all over the place.

You should consider sage too. It's also a perennial and mine usually doesn't die back before Thanksgiving, so I am able to use it fresh in the dressing.

The best part of an herb bed is it is almost maintenance free, and since space is not an issue, you could grow enough stuff to never have to buy a jar of dried herbs from the grocery store ever again!

Gonna have to wait a week to start my supers. Was going to do them this weekend, but after looking at Bonnie's starts I really liked her setup and I have the plugs ordered for myself now. 19 cents each on Amazon.

Adding another pepper to my list. Aji Dulce #2. These look pretty amazing.

I think I will do one plant of the Aji Limon that I have a pack of and it states that it isn't lemon drop. I'll have to do a side by side testing of these two this year if they both make it.

Can you tell I am getting anxious to get dirt under my nails lol. Awaiting plugs to come in this week and then its GROW TIME!!!!

Homemade small metal grow table is up and functional.

Best of luck with your season ahead bodeen. Looking forward to it and also your herb garden sounds like a great plan.

My plugs came in today. Surprised they came in damp already, unless that is how they come in. The hole still looks deep to me. Are you sure the peppers won't have any trouble coming up from the bottom of the hole?

Got them under the light with the dome on to warm them up a spell before starting the seed planting process.

Hmmm ... the holes on mine were much smaller. I don't think the depth of the hole is an issue though, since you aren't actually filling the hole in. Yep, they come pre-moistened!

Best of luck, Jeff! I'll be watching your progress.

Yeah, I got the wrong stuff. This is the flora plugs and now that I am reading up on them, I think it will be best to return them. I don't need the added stress of trying something new on this large of scale and getting myself way behind schedule if they don't work.

That sucks but if you don't feel good about it, I agree ... you're the boss at dis garden :)

Sent back the Flora generic stuff I wasn't feeling good about and just ordered the Root Riot from Amazon. Signed up for the Amazon Rewards Card and got a $50.00 gift card. So my 200 Root Riot plugs were free and I still have 2 bucks left on my card.

You probably could have topped the bottom of the holes up with some vermiculite or peat before placing the seeds in.
But I know how you feel though, If I'm not comfortable or unsure with the situation I'll make the needed change.

Your seeds will be popping in no time, nice idea setting the seed flats within the warmth of the baseboard vent.

I actually heat the house with wood so the heat vent never runs lol. I usually go with one of two options to germ. Place the flat on top of the green table as the 4 bulbs in the table warm the surface quite well, or I move them near the wood stove. That is how I germ test in paper toweling. Behind the wood stove in a small ziplock bag.

My pots came in for the first transplant of my plants when they're ready. From here their next stop will be in the garden. Trying to eliminate last years mistake of transplanting them into too small of a container and causing another transplant to happen. Probably not great for the plants and more work than I want.

My root riot should be in tomorrow or Saturday, so I am hoping to get some seeds started this weekend. Until then, I will be getting labels made, and perhaps some germ tests done.

180 pots and trays.

And by germ tests, I mean see if I can headstart some seeds before putting them in the plugs....little late for a germ test on seeds I will be planting this weekend lol
