CaneDog 2020

2020 is underway, so it's time to start the new season's glog!  Odd times though, as I'm still harvesting stragglers from last season while the earliest of my 2020 starts are already up.  Grow areas are a bit disorganized as a result

This season's grow should be a little more balanced than last season, though I'll still have a ridiculous number of rocotos - many OW's plus a bunch of new varieties - and quite a few carry-over OW wilds, too.

A big "thanks" to all who shared seeds with me for this season.  I'm appreciative and excited to have lots of cool varieties in the mix, many of which I got to watch you grow last season and can now try myself.  I think I'm current with everyone, but if by any chance you were expecting seeds from me that may have slipped through the cracks just shoot me a PM.

As I mentioned, things aren't super organized right now, but here's a few pics anyway.

I planted a few seeds early, just because I couldn't hold off the extra few weeks without planting something.

Amarillo de Arequipa Rocoto just popped- Thanks CTB!

Ecuador Sweet Rocoto twins - and a big shout out to the two peeps who sent me seeds for these. Both sources germinated and I'm really happy to have them growing.  Disclaimer: they may look overly wet, but these just got sprayed (to avoid HH's) and it's a very porous medium.

Put another few rocotos in to soak today.

This is a galapagoense that popped a few days back, exactly 100 days after sowing.

And this pod contains Jalapeno Zapotec x Purple Jalapeno F1, one of a couple F1 JZ crosses I'll be growing out this season. The other is Tekne Dolmasi x JZ.

Finally, I got a solid recommendation on a new media mix I'll be trying out this season in a few variations. The mix is heavy in partially composted bark fines, a fir/hemlock mix as pine's hard to get locally. It's proving to be a veritable mycelium factory.  Bodes well for good symbiosis with the appropriate fungal species this year.

Heck, they're even fruiting out the drainage holes...  :)

That's it for now.  Good luck to all in 2020!

I moved all the rocoto starts into an extra closet in a spare room so they could have their own grow space.  It's cooler and I set them up under a 48" T5HO with two 55w bulbs running on a long cycle so their light is less intense, but will accumulate.  Forgot to take a picture, of that, but I took some update shots.

Galapagoense.  First time growing these and they seem to really dislike wet feet.  It seems to be getting easier to keep it happy now as it's root are beginning to fill out in the bag.

The T-Spaz definitely want to get bushy

The 2 OW Tovarii have been growing at every possible node - and then some!  These were among the Round II OW's that were kept cool and on a very short photoperiod under an HLG100 for the last few months.  That setup seemed to do very well for keeping OW peppers healthy and bushy without getting tall or stretchy.  I just upped the photoperiod considerably and I'm hoping the growth starts to take off with the extra light and warmth.

Unfortunately, I just saw the new beginnings of aphids on these, which I haven't seen in my grow since a round of plant showers a good while back.  I'll try to get the plants in this tent sprayed off again, which should keep the aphids down until they go outside.  Don't know why, but the local aphids seem easier to deal with than the ones I'm seeing other people have to deal with in colder climates.

Tov #1 - I put a mini Ecuador red rocoto into the container with it a couple weeks back and now it's rooted in through the drain holes.

Nice dark green color on those plants CD.  Mine aren't that dark green so I'm curious what you are feeding them?

Hey Tybo.  They've greened up nicely since going from the bark into the current soil mix.  They're not getting any liquid nutrients.  The mix is approximately 8 parts Stone Organics Edna's Best Potting Soil; 1 part perlite; 1 part worm castings, and about a tablespoon each of Leonardite and and biochar per 3g's of mix.  The mix seems to be working equally well in plastic containers as in the nursery bags and I expect them to do just fine though the next pot-up without additional nutrients.

You can see the BOC still shows a little deficiency in the established leaves - it was transplanted into this mix more recently - but it's starting to come around with the new growth as the others have done.  I think the newest set of leaves that have a yellow tint in the above picture will be that same green though as soon as they've had a few more days to establish.

Once they're in their final homes for the season I'll typicality use a small addition of Hendrikus granules into the container or planting hole and Fish with Kelp periodically if I think they'd benefit from a liquid boost, but I haven't had a need to do anything like that with the current group.  At least not yet.

Did some necessary transplanting this weekend, which served to remind me how much I over-planted - and with the main annuum planting still to happen   Currently scheduled for next weekend.

Took some pictures along the way.  Thanks to those who made growing these possible.

A couple wild-collected Brazilian Cumari from Leo72.  No names for these, so I ID them as dark (left) and light (right) based on the relative hue of the seeds.

An update on a few of the pubenscens that were moved into the new grow space.

A couple Montufar.  I wasn't really planning to grow both, but now I'll have to unwind roots and transplant.
20200308 Montufar2.jpg

4 of 5 Hyperpube-X (yellow) F2's I'm growing out.  I like the lighter green hue and fuzziness of these, which is a trait they show in common, but for perhaps the lower right plant.  The difference is subtle, but slightly more noticeable in person.
20200308 Hyper-X4.jpg

The 5th and biggest Hyper-X. It developed a lean in the nursery bag, so I pulled the bottom two leaves and angled the exposed stem to the lights.  It seems to be developing the low laterals as a result.

Beautifully sunny day in my neck of the PNW woods!  It feels like spring if you ignore that it dropped to 31 last night.  The back deck crew is loving the sun!

Some of the Round 2 overwintered plants soaking up rays.

Mostly Round 1 OW's that have been living on the deck, coming in only when the overnight temps are at their lowest.
20200309 Round1Crew.jpg

I forgot about this Gelbe Riesen I'd for some reason set in backyard (off the deck and out of sight).  It's been out through a couple recent freezing (though just barely) overnights, but appears unphased.  Not even to the newest growth seems to have been affected.
20200309 GelbeRiesen.jpg

This Aji Amarillo has been through a lot. It got yanked out of a shared Grodan cube, resuscitated in a mini Kratky vial, then planted into soil in the hot/humid tent that's home to the Chinense and Annuum.  Just the other day I moved it into the Rocoto grow room and it seems very appreciative.
20200309 AjiAmarilloPG.jpg

Finally, this guy just got topped and put on an intensive lat development program.  I have it elevated close to a light tube and lying on its side angled so the nodes nearest the base get the strongest light and the higher up ones, progressively less intense.  The leaves re-oriented quickly and I'm expecting killer lats to develop soon.  This is 1 of my 2 CAP 1491 Eximium x USDA Cardenasii F1 crosses. It just kept growing straight up and quickly, with no lateral branches, so it got dealt with.  It was showing some deficient on the lowest leaves, as is evident in the pic, but it will be all-good now.
20200309 1491xUSDALatsProgram.jpg

OK, OK.  No more complaining about 31° from the 'dog.  :)

A few update pics.

Hyperpube-X F2 #1 is starting to bud.  I'm curious what will come of these.
20200314 Hyper-X1.jpg

The Montufar separated from their shared nursery bag are doing well after the procedure.
20200314 Mon24.jpg

And the Eximium 1491 x USDA Cardenasii F1 responded reasonable well to its lat program and is transplanted back into an upright mode.

That's great, bookers.  I'm hoping they show some phenotypical variance, but of course they all look pretty much the same right now.

Your spare room grow just keeps gaining more and more momentum.  You may soon be a victim of your own success keeping all those guys happy until plant out!  :)

CaneDog we in the same boat, I'm struggling for space now and waiting for warmer weather to move them outside!! Plants are looking awesome!!

Thanks TBF - and you've sure got that right!   Glad things are going well for you!   We're scheduled for a week of bright sun here, but chilly overnight temperature.  I just moved the last of the Round 2 OW's out onto the deck to create room, but they'll need to come in every night the temps aren't >= 40°F.  That opens up a 4x2 tent with an HLG100; space already in high demand  :)

Up-potted a bunch of plants into Nursery 1's today.  They should benefit from the new soil and extra leg room.

The F1 Jalapeno Zapotec x Purple Jalapeno are flowering - and showing the incomplete dominance of A in the flower. The F2 grow on these could be interesting, but in the meantime...
