Carolina Reaper (HP22B) Community Grow

A few members including myself are growing seeds for this variety ASAP. I and a few others here on THP thought it would be fun to have a "community glog" strictly for this variety, a fun thread about the HP22B and growing this pepper for the first time.

I think we should start a community glog like this anytime there is a new pepper with alot of attention and alot of people growing it, possible world record holder or not. It would be fun, and this should be fun! That's why we all love this hobby is it not?

Therefore, this will be a drama-free, controversy-free, fun glog for all of us growers and others to enjoy. If you grow, please chime in. If you're growing this variety, please post pictures and chime in about your observations.

Again.. This thread is ment to be fun and informative, but mostly fun :)
Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.. lol. Keep it drama-free.
I, and many others would really appreciate this thread to stay that way.

Now lets get to growing!

I went with the paper towel method for this guy just like I have with all my mid-season starts. It is far from my favorite way to germinate seeds but I'm in no hurry this time of year which is why I went this route. I've had the seeds in the paper towel for about a week now on top of my HOT5 lighting closet. The seeds should be showing root tips soon, then they will be visiting some real soil :D

How's it going for everyone else?

Greetings from Africa! Just a check in on the glog iro the Caroline Reaper. Mine germinated like a dream. I lost a few along the way due to my own doing. The african sun did most of the damage frying 4 out of the 6 I planted. I can however report that the remaining two are doing well and busy producing lots of flowers and pods. It's still early days, but here are some pics.

Looks pretty evil :D

Easily getting the Primos to pop and 1/3 on the Reapers. I soaked 4 more Reaper seeds last night and planted them in a 50/50 mix of Jiffy seed starting mix and Happy Frog and also threw some MYKOS in there as well . So we'll see what happens.

None of my Primos popped this year...but I got one Reaper up and running. So I may have to compare this years Reapers to last year's Primo pics. I have last year's Primos powdered up, and will do the same with some Reapers and see how they stack up.

Nice pod there Peri!

Let me tell you about Lowe's and lights. I went one day to get an inexpesive set up. I found one that was 12 1/2 ". Lowe's doesn't carry that size bulb so I figure what the hell and went for 18" but no bulbs in 6500k. I went back and forth 3 or four times, this one is hardwired but I want a plug, right size not a T5, and finally just got CFLs and the quick plug in light sockets. Really frustrating day.

Wow Reapers in South Africa....Lourens that sure is one mean looking pod. It may change shape as it gets bigger.
Keep us posted on that one.
I've got 4 of 6 seeds to pop.......maybe two more yet, who knows...

Isn't it crazy... if we all just stop and stand still for a mo and think about what is happening to chillies around the globe... never before in the history of chillies has there been as rapid global transit of chilli seeds. These seeds are going to all corners of the world and without a doubt... there will be forced hybradisation of indigenous species (I think) - just athought. Not sure if this is good or bad... feels good right now though :D

So, apparently what I thought were reapers were actually my Butch T's. I can't read my own labels, I guess. My reapers are the only seeds of my first planting wave that haven't popped yet, even the Bhut's are starting true leaves. I have one seed that has a tiny little green hook, but it has been languishing for a while and probably won't make it. Kinda disappointing, hopefully they get themselves going soon.
