Carolina Reaper (HP22B) Community Grow

A few members including myself are growing seeds for this variety ASAP. I and a few others here on THP thought it would be fun to have a "community glog" strictly for this variety, a fun thread about the HP22B and growing this pepper for the first time.

I think we should start a community glog like this anytime there is a new pepper with alot of attention and alot of people growing it, possible world record holder or not. It would be fun, and this should be fun! That's why we all love this hobby is it not?

Therefore, this will be a drama-free, controversy-free, fun glog for all of us growers and others to enjoy. If you grow, please chime in. If you're growing this variety, please post pictures and chime in about your observations.

Again.. This thread is ment to be fun and informative, but mostly fun :)
Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.. lol. Keep it drama-free.
I, and many others would really appreciate this thread to stay that way.

Now lets get to growing!

I went with the paper towel method for this guy just like I have with all my mid-season starts. It is far from my favorite way to germinate seeds but I'm in no hurry this time of year which is why I went this route. I've had the seeds in the paper towel for about a week now on top of my HOT5 lighting closet. The seeds should be showing root tips soon, then they will be visiting some real soil :D

How's it going for everyone else?

Dale, awesome looking peppers - as someone who has grown a large number of these are you seeing a lot of pod variation? Were those pods a representative sample of the 250 plants you have or cherry picked as best matching the phenotype?

As i said in the post..they are "examples" of what my plants produced.... NOT hand picked at all! I went out and just picked a few at random. Out of 250+/- plants im growing of these, i had 7 plants that i removed from the group once fruit set. This was due to pod variation was not close enough to "ideal" appearance. They were still nice peppers on these 7 plants, but i only grow plants that grow 100% "true to type" pods :) The "questionable" plants get ripped up and tossed out! :)

So, 7 out of 250+/- plants, IMO is a GREAT ratio. As a grower i can accept that! :)

Thanks for the info.  I agree 7 out of 250 is a fantastic result.  I bought seeds and have been worried they might not be true to type so this is reassuring.  Based on 7 out of 250 even if all the non ideal seeds made it into one packet you would still get 3 ideal plants.  Given the size of Dales sample I wonder if some clever genetics person could have a guestimate at which generation the Reaper is in?

They are some mean looking pods Dale.  Still 7 out of 250 isn't F8 Generation or greater stability figures is it?? more like  f6?? So its still not Stable which I think we all knew anyway.

F6 would be my guess ~96.8% true breeding

Nice! Good to see some good consistency! Are you going to sell any of the seeds yourself? Or are you just growing to sell the pods/plants/dried? Are you growing any for Joe?

Ok guys n gals :)

nice ... fair bit of heat right there!!  So the seeds of those pods will be F7 by my calculations, one more after that and they will be considered stable.

Sounds like Baker's is the place to go for the most stable reapers right now. That is, unless he is growing seeds for PJ, I'm not clear on that yet. He probably didn't see me ask.

Just harvested my first 5 Reapers, and like most superhots I've grown, the first to ripen never got very big. The stingers and the gnarliness are there, but I'll have to wait for the full-sized pods to determine just how true to form they really are. For the newest contender for hottest pepper, these little bastards are downright cute.

Holy Tinkle David!  Now THAT is a plant!
thanks! Doesnt matter how I take the photo, I can't seem to get it to look as big as it does in real life.
Its dwc and the tub is about a foot tall so over all the plant is a touch taller than me and I'm 6,2. I guess it might be closer to 6 foot wide.
Will try more photos with different lighting and angles.
