CMPMAN1974 - 2012 Grow Log - Started 2/26/12

Well, after a long awaited time, I finally got some seeds in dirt this evening. Wow, it took a long time as some of these names of these varieties are long. :) My theme this year...Pequins/Tepins - rare ones & AFRICA. Also, I think some rare Brazilian varieties will be planted too along with some Pubescens in the next few days. I have no idea how germination will be on some of these African varieties, but it should be fun. I enjoy market varieties and odd stuff found off the beaten path.

Here's what I've got sowed to date. Wish me luck!

Chris

My neighbors don't seem to come out too much. lol. Maybe they reached over and nibbled on a few too many Trinidad Scorpions before. Maybe I should have a neighbor hood U-Pick pepper patch around September/October like cider mills do. :)

Looking great Chris :)
Do you hand water them all or is there an irrigation system burried in the ground?
Thanks again for those Huge chocolate twisted habanero seeds that you sent me they have grown much faster then my other plants. Thick stems and big leaves It looks like they are going to be monster plants.

That's a real bummer the plant was destroyed. :( It's happened to me in the past too. Somrtimes you can't win them all. I find that Chocolate Habalokia and White Bullet Habanero had a tendancy to do just that.

Happened 2 days before I had decided to stake everything, plant was looking great too, nice purple color to everything. So be it, live and learn I guess. Keep up the awesome work Chris.

Haha, or you could sell the extra pods in a farmers market. What do you do with all those pods? The AISPES plant looks nice. Are you part of the AISPES club? I was thinking of signing up in 2012 but got lazy. Maybe in 2013 :)

Chris could you do a topic with some photos of all the pequins you have worked with? I have 5 or 6 varieties going you sent me, my schauzers rearranged the ID tags........

Beautiful plants sir, will you try out those seeds I sent you this year or next?

Great photos Chris! I love the "pepper mounds", LOL! Everything looks great and I can't wait to see our pod shots this summer.

Just curious, but why don't you have an avatar? You have a million great photos, just curious to why you choose to go without?

Beautiful plants Chris. Looks like you are off to a healthy transplant. Keep up the great work!!

Btw, I had great germination results with the seeds I won from you late last year. Thanks again!!

I hand water. Fortunately in my area, I am not forced to hand water a ton. Rain seems to come sporadically, but we have had our years of real dry weather. Irrigation would be GREAT, but...

Looking great Chris :)

I use a lot of pods for cooking, especially thai varieties. I pound through orange thai pods. :) I also make powders too, give some away, and more. I have considered the Farmer's Market angle. I may sometime.

I'll work on something. Pequins are very hard to differentiate by looks alone at times. Plant growth is different on some, especially ones like Pequin from Puerto Vallarte. I think I did grow a few of the ones you sent. I'll have to look. If not this year, definitely will in 2013.

I am very happy to hear the seeds germinated well. That is wonderful news.

Just got caught up. Chris for the mounds.....clover on the slope sides. Helps with nitrogen and will help a little with erosion prevention.

you said:I definitely cram in more plants than I should in the amount of space I have. I always sacrifice plant size for variety. Done it for years. I guess I'm wired like that. :)

ahhh, glad I'm not the only one.....I started out at real intentions of 24".....but it seems to have collapsed down 16". Next year it'll be 24" for sure.. :liar:
Good to see em in the ground,...funny how that makes me feel better in the glogs when people get em in the ground -and they aren't even my peppers?!!!

Thanks Spicegeist. :)

It's been a rough last couple of days here. Temps really hit high - today mid 90s. My plants are struggling. Lost a few due to heat. They shriveled up and literally cooked. Talk about a brutal introduction to the outdoor elements. They were hardened off, but it's hard to prepare plants for mid 90s and pure sun. THAT is where it pays off to have bigger transplants started in January/February. The bigger the plants, the tougher they are. I had to water a fair amount today, even in-ground ones. They'll be OK. I usually see very little upwards growth on in-ground pepper plants until mid-July in my region. They are not growing root systems and then later will start getting larger. Patience is key for me. :)

I wish I had more partially shaded areas to grow. Those plants do SO much better. it's obvious.

Chris

Sorry to hear about the heat Chris. I also plan to start a bit earlier next time around.

It is interesting about the in ground/potted plant size. My in ground plants are growing, but their vertical growth is no where near their cousins in pots. Thanks for the tidbit of info. The mark of someone who had done this for a while. :)

Matt

Chris your gardens off to a great start!.......Likewise here in Chicago with the temps. mid 90's the last few days and my larger plants are fairing off better than the small ones. I contribute that to the larger root zone being able to absorb water at a higher rate, plus the late afternoon shade helps the plants perk up faster.
Good luck with your season............. I'm looking forward to seeing photos of the "unique" peppers that you grow...

Greg

looks like your season is off to a fantastic start Chris...good luck with your grow this year...I hope it is everything you want...

a little advice about starting a business....think long and hard about it and when you think you are ready, put it off for another year...

Few new pictures from my garden today...

I agree Spicegeist. Most likely, it's not stable per my source, but I'm having fun trying anyways. It's a beautiful plant. That Black Thai is very cool looking IMO. I haven't seen anything quite like it. It's a cross one of my sources sent me they grew for several years. It was originally from Orange Thai seed I sent them. It turned out to be very unique and appears more stable. The combination of the foliage color, pod color - jet black and flower beauty is a real stand out!
