Compmodder26's 2012 Grow Log - New Video Update

So I just finalized my grow list for 2012, aka my first attempt at growing peppers. I'm starting out relatively small for my first time, although it has been tough trying to narrow them down thanks to Jamie (romy6) and his extreme generosity. But at any rate here is what I plan to grow:

Red Bhut Jolokia - 1
7 Pot Jonah - 1
Naga Morich - 2
Brain Strain - 2
TS Butch T - 2
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia - 1
Yellow Fatalii - 1

So that's a total of 10 plants and 7 varieties. I'll be starting at the first of the year.

Wish me luck!

Edit: Hehe, I just posted this and I'm already changing it up. I decided that since I'm growing 2 naga morich, they are supposed to be similar to bhuts so I dropped 1 red bhut and added 1 7 pot jonah

Those root pouches are doing good for you as well I see. I was hesitant to try them out, but my plants love them and it looks as though yours do as well.

Yeah, they do love them. I love how inexpensive they are too.
Glad to see you are having success with them. Those plants you
have in the root pouches look really great.
I'm excited to try some out in a couple of weeks at next plant out.

Paul, I don't think you'll be disappointed in them. They really are great pots. I'd be surprised if you don't get excellent results from them.

Thanks, nothing like another experiment!

Hey, I think I see room in that bed for more peppers!

Awesome! Looking great and I appreciate the pic of the morning glory!

Glad you like it. I'll be sure to post more pics as it matures more.

 Yeah I know. I walk out there every day and I'm constantly tormented by that one corner. Too late to start from seed, but I may have to go to a local nursery and see what kind of peppers they have growing there. Thanks for pushing me over the edge :)

Dude. Just caught up on your GLOG! Congrats on the daughter and excellent name. That was the name we were going with if we had a girl. Plants look good and healthy! I thought you had been growing forever! Surprised it's your first year! Double accolades for managing it with a baby!

Thanks Seth! Still got a lot to learn, but indeed would be completely lost if it weren't for everyone here on THP.

The two oldest pods on the banana pepper plant are starting to work their way down into the soil now. Should I let them go or is there something I can do to stop that (beyond picking them). I've heard that it isn't good for them to be touching soil, with the risk for disease increasing.

Edit: Both pods are 6 inches long now.

Edit 2: I read around and as I thought, people say to keep them off the ground or the part that touches will likely rot. So I've placed 1 plastic knife I use as markers for the plants underneath each pod to push it away from the soil. We'll see how long that works until they've grown past the knife. Hopefully it will cause them to curve up in response.

I have used plastic picnic plates under squash and fruit like that,
then random wind and squirrels and other stuff doesn't disodge
them from the plate. Maybe that would work as well with your peppers.

Exciting times! 2 Naga morich and 2 fataliis are getting hooks. They should be ready to put in seed starting mix tomorrow. And 2 of my Butch Ts are popping out of the grow mix.

The third Brain Strain seed that had a hook has stopped growing. Not sure what happened there. But looks like another one might be getting ready to pop a hook.

Still waiting on those darn choco bhuts. Looks like you are right Brandon.

I was looking forward to my Naga's too. I purchased two from Cross Country nurseries that died... ugh

Your grow looks wonderful...

Woohoo, getting some podage on the supers. Got 6 baby pods on a naga morich and 1 pod on the Yellow 7 Pot. Bunch of flowers on all of them. I am experiencing some flower drop, but I'm not concerned. The nighttime temps here have been in the mid to upper 50s from last week into this week so it doesn't surprise me that some are dropping. Oh yeah, the banana is podding up like crazy. I think I count 15 pods on it now. On to the pics (light on pics this time):

The supers. Getting bushier:

One thing I'm a little puzzled by. The Bhut Jolokia seems to be A LOT thirstier these past couple of days than the others. I've got them on a schedule of watering every day for 2 minutes at noon (1/8 of a gallon for each plant). While all the rest seem to enjoy it, the Bhut will perk up for about 10 minutes after watering then it will wilt again. Today I gave it a pint extra of water and it perked up for about an hour, but now it's starting to droop again. The pot is significantly lighter than the rest of the pots.

So I was talking to my neighbor last night and he was pruning some herbs that were overgrowing their intended growing space. He was kind enough to supply me with some oregano, mint, and chocolate mint. So I planted them in that lonely corner of the raised bed. I'll include some pics in my update next week.

Um... you might not want to turn the mint loose in that bed. I've read that it will take over if planted in the ground. Mine is in containers, so don't know from first hand experience, but I've read horror stories about it.

The oregano will eventually spread to about 3' in width, but you can shovel prune it if you want to keep it smaller.

Yeah, I'm aware of how intrusive it can be. I will just have to keep an eye on it and prune it back as needed.

Wasn't trying to discourage you from growing it. I love growing herbs, and have a whole bed dedicated to them. For some reason though, I can't keep the invasive stuff like mint and lemon balm alive. Buy them every year. I'm sure if I put them in the ground they'd be fine, but the herb bed is already full.

I'm not sure if the mint will thrive anyway as from what I've been reading, it prefers partial sun. Both of my raised beds are full sun (10+ hours a day). We'll just see. If it doesn't make it, oh well, didn't cost me a penny. And if it starts spreading into my pepper plants, then the growth is getting axed. Those plants (even if not my preferred super hots) are more prized than the mint/oregano.

Edit: And I never took your comment as trying to discourage me, so don't be worried about that. :)
