Compmodder26's 2012 Grow Log - New Video Update

So I just finalized my grow list for 2012, aka my first attempt at growing peppers. I'm starting out relatively small for my first time, although it has been tough trying to narrow them down thanks to Jamie (romy6) and his extreme generosity. But at any rate here is what I plan to grow:

Red Bhut Jolokia - 1
7 Pot Jonah - 1
Naga Morich - 2
Brain Strain - 2
TS Butch T - 2
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia - 1
Yellow Fatalii - 1

So that's a total of 10 plants and 7 varieties. I'll be starting at the first of the year.

Wish me luck!

Edit: Hehe, I just posted this and I'm already changing it up. I decided that since I'm growing 2 naga morich, they are supposed to be similar to bhuts so I dropped 1 red bhut and added 1 7 pot jonah

Hey comp lookin' good! I got a few that dry out quicker than the others too...I have been bottom watering the trouble makers a couple times a week to re-hydrate their soil and it seems to be working. Actually considering buying a plastic kiddie pool and doing them all that way about once a week. I have also placed each of the problem children in such a way that their containers are shaded by the other plants in the afternoons. Seems to be working for me, hope it helps!

Yeah, last night I gave the bhut a thorough soaking and it seems to be happy today. I may have to resort to that for my problem children from now on. My biggest concern is that we're going on vacation in the second week of July. I want to be sure that all my plants will be okay with the watering schedule I have set up. So far, all love it except for the Bhut. So if I can at least be sure that a thorough soaking at the beginning of the week will keep it happy all week then I'll rest easier.

Woohoo!! First harvest of the season. Rather small, but a milestone nonetheless. Picked two banana peppers today. These bad boys are going in some sausage calzones tonight.

congrats comp, dont forget to post your calzone :fireball: i love food :drooling: :drooling:

Sorry pinoy, forgot the pics of the calzones. But take my word for it, they were awesome. The banana peppers shined through nicely in them, adding a wonderful peppery sweetness to the flavor profile.

...

No pics in this update, but I count 9 pods on one naga morich, 3 pods on the other naga morich, 2 pods on the oldest 7 pot jonah, and 1 pod on the yellow 7 pot. I know not to worry about flower drop, but it is quite discouraging to keep watching the flowers drop off the yellow 7. It keeps pumping out the flowers, but only 1 has set a pod so far. Just have to be patient I suppose.

Edit: Guess I shouldn't neglect reporting on the status of the banana and bell plants: 15 pods on the banana, 2 on the smallest bell, and 1 on the largest bell. The largest bell doing worse than the yellow 7 for flower drop.

Alright guys and gals. Got a question for you. This post has me concerned about my fertilizing program. In the thread, the OP's TSMB and Butch T pods didn't have near the heat that was expected from them. The post I linked says that too much nitrogen can cause capsaicin to drop off. I am using Dyna Gro "Grow" formula. It has an NPK of 7-9-5. I'm using in in my fertigation system. My plants get watered daily for 2 minutes (1/8 gallon a day for each plant) and I have the concentrate diluted to where 1/4 tsp of fertilizer is dispensed in every gallon of water that flows through the line (1 gallon of water total a day, each plant would receive 0.03125 tsp of fertilizer a day). Based on this data, do you think I'm in danger of causing the pods to not be as hot as expected?

BTW, the plants are happy as can be. They are pumping out pods like crazy now and show no signs of fert burn. So as far as growth is concerned, it would seem that the fertilizing program is working.

Got a care package in the mail today from Jamie (romy6). He sent me a few pods and some powders. Jamie, I've thanked you before, but allow me to do it again. I really appreciate it.

Tonight I ate the 7 pot barrackpore (top left). I was all prepared to do a video review of it, but my stupid web cam crapped out on me half way through the recording on youtube, and then the recording process locked up as a result. So I will instead resort to a simple textual review of it. Jamie warned me to be careful with this pod. He said that Al (newtune) says it's hotter than the brainstrains. And if you've never seen Al eat a superhot before, it's a sight to behold. The man is a statue, never flinching even once. So if he thinks it's hot, then you better take notice. The pod I ate, while certainly way hotter than bhuts, wasn't as hot as the yellow brainstrain I tried from BakersPeppers. This pepper had a great flavor. Much milder in flavor than a bhut, but still has that distinctive Chinense flavor. I do however get a strong aftertaste from this pepper. The heat takes a while to build, much like a bhut. It hit me first in the back of my throat and the back of my tongue. It pretty much stayed there the whole time. Hardly any mouth burn at all. But the heat on the back of the throat was VERY intense. It had my nose running and a few tears coming out of my eyes. It has been nearly 20 minutes since I ate it and the heat is nearly gone. There's a slight burn still left on the back of my tongue. While, not the hottest pepper I've ever had, the endorphin rush on this pepper was the most intense I've ever had, besides SalsaLady's Pure Evil. My whole face was tingling. The stomach burn isn't bad yet. I did make sure to eat a peanut butter sandwich and drink 2 glasses of milk before eating it. We'll see how my night goes ;) Anyway, I really like this pepper. I've saved the seeds from it and will grow it out next year.

More reviews to come...

Just an update on how my night went after eating the barrackpore. About 45 minutes after I went to bed, my stomach started hurting pretty bad. I got up and went downstairs. After about 15 minutes the pain subsided and never returned. So not really that bad.

You are one tough cookie Brian. That is how a man eats a Barrackpore. Great job :onfire: You must have got a blank ;)

No need to wink on that. I have to agree. I don't claim to be a beast when it comes to tolerance (no slouch, but not afraid to admit when a pod beats me either, as was the case with the Yellow Brainstrain). So when people review your Barrackpore and say it is worse than a Brainstrain, and the one I review doesn't beat it, then I'm inclined to agree with the majority and you in that I got a pod that wasn't as hot as the norm. I'd be happy to take on another one to see if that's the case ;)

And thanks for the compliments :)

I dunno man...the Barackpore I ate was worse than any of the Brains Jaimie sent. I've noticed that sometimes its almost as if your system is able to process the burn and stomach no problem, and other times after the same prep work (food/milk) you have issues??? Great review! Did the after taste resemble dish soap to you??? Both times I ate one that is the impression I got. (I shouldn't know what dish soap tastes like, but mom always had a hard time getting the bar of soap in my mouth to wash it out)

Thanks Shane. I didn't get the dishsoap flavor (I too am no stranger to having my mouth washed out with soap). Almost like a VERY strong aftertaste from eating garlic and onion together.

Tried one of the mystery pods today with lunch. That is a VERY good pepper. It immediately greets you with a nice sweetness, then almost as quickly the heat comes on. It has a nice medium heat to it. I'd put it on par with a Thai or Tepin. This one focused mainly on the tongue and salivary glands. Towards the end of the burn, it moved a bit to my lips, but not much. Really good pepper you have there Jamie.

I plan on doing a review of the Brainstrain tonight. I'm going to attempt with my webcam again. This time I'll use my work laptop to do it, as it is proven to work with that. Guess my home lappy is getting dated.

Update time. Got pods growing like crazy! The Naga Morich is indeed the prolific producer that everybody claims it to be. On my oldest plant, there are 25+ pods growing already. The youngest isn't far behind it. The Fatalii is starting to get going as well. Bot of my 7 Pot Jonahs look like they'll be good producers as well. Got a few pods forming on the Butch T and the Yellow 7 Pot. The Butch T is just slow to produce flowers it seems, but they usually turn into pods. However, the Yellow 7 Pot produces a TON of flowers but very few seem to be setting pods. I've only got 4 on it so far with countless aborted flowers coming from it. And finally, my Bhut Jolokia is bringing up the rear with a big fat 0 in the pod count. While it is my oldest, it seems to have the hardest time setting pods. Not sure what's up. Guess patience is a virtue right? Anyway, here's some pics:

Thanks Mido!

Just have a couple more pics here:

Also notice in the pic above the small plants on the right corner. Those are the mint and oregano that my neighbor gave me. They don't seem to happy with the transplant at the moment. Not sure if the mint will pull through or not. The oregano seems to want to fight a little harder. We'll see if it works out or not.

Wow - nice video! You took that like a champ! The Brain Strain destroyed me, so I'm officially impressed. Your peppers look nice and bushy too. Looks like those pots are really working well for you.

Thanks Andy. Oh yea, gotta get you a pic of the morning glory. It is getting very tall. It's already outgrown our 6 foot privacy fence. I've added more twine along the top of the fence and will try to get it to grow horizontally now. Loving the flowers it puts out.
