craft beer

Big fan of Milk Stout Nitro here.  8 Ball Stout also tasty.

Tried this ten minutes ago.  Really bizarre beer.  Smells like I've got a plate of indian food sitting in front of me.  Taste is pretty unique.  Little flakes of coconut floating around and mostly tastes like an indian curry.  I won't attempt to name all the potential spices that go into an indian curry but this beer is spicy for sure and even has a tiny bit of heat in the finish.

Tried this for the first time a couple days ago.  Not bad but not really good either.  Apparently their pilsner is pretty good but I don't like pilsners so I'll probably never have it.  Most of their beers seem kinda of crappy to mediocre at best.

Speaking of crappy, picked this up on a whim.  Haven't had it since probably around 1988 or 89.  It's pretty awful, but that shouldn't surprise anybody.  When a crappy brewer (Miller) provides a bottom end cheap beer in their lineup you know it's gonna be full of corn goodness.  Note the rich color and vibrant head lol :drunk:

I just wanted to add that as a general rule any beer that says "premium" on the label is crappy.  It's true.  Google it.
yup got that, good beer speaks for itself, it doesnt need fancy wording or even fancy commercials to prop it up, good beer will stand on its own merits

thanks your friend Joe

Just watched a documentary a few nights ago that addressed this specific situation.  The macro brews are all the same.  Rabid Bud Lite, Coors Lite, and Miller Lite fans all failed to identify their favorite beer in blind taste tests.  I suspect a can of Milwaukee's Beast could have easily blended in to that crowd.

The documentary also talked about how they all rely heavily on marketing to keep people buying their stuff.  I've never seen a single ad for any of my favorite beers, and none of them say "premium".  The movie was called "Beer Wars" and you can watch it for free at Hulu http://www.hulu.com/watch/235712

It's not the most exciting movie in the world and one of the main people featured in the movie was pretty darn annoying but overall if you're knocking back a few and have some free time on your hands you could do worse.

Cool Vid.   As a Craft Beer drinker and Homebrewer who started drinking "Good Beer " in the early 90's, its nice to see how the industry has advanced in the Golden Age of the Big three.   Now I know how this process has taken place in probably hundreds of small breweries all over the Good Ol USA. Its a battle out there and ultimately the consumer will win every time.

           Cheers

i know that BLUE MOON  can be a dirty word here with some but i just tried there ROUNDER and i liked it
my wife, niece and i were invited to a neighbors birthday party and they had it in a mixed pack so i thought i would give it a wurl
Beer advocate gave it a 73 which is good
however on a better note i had something much better than that, they popped open a few bottles of OMMAGANG "THREE PHILOSOPHERS"
WOW THAT STUFF WAS GOOD !! reminded me of Chimay Grand Reserve
nice people and good taste in beer Oh yeah i cant forget also had a Weyerbacher Merry Monks too

THANKS YOUR FRIEND JOE

Drinking this as I type.  It's pretty darn good if you like amber ale.

Tried this last weekend.  It was okay I guess but not anything special to me and nothing I would intentionally buy again in today's super crowded IPA market:

Wife picked this up last weekend because it was cheap (and probably old as dirt).  I have sort of a love/hate relationship with belgium ales.  I mostly don't care for them but love trying new beers so there you go.  It was pretty good I guess if you like your beer to taste like juicy fruit gum.

anyone ever try

YOUNGS DOUBLE CHOCOLATE STOUT??, i really liked it

smooth no fight but i still l like Guinness a bit better and LANCASTER MILK STOUT is my top fav Stout thus far
also tried a FULL PINT BREWING "NIGHT OF THE LIVING STOUT" It was quite good but it reminded me more of a robust porter than a stout, it has Cascade hops brewed in it which are used in alot of pale ales, so i imagine that might have a little to do with it
thanks your friend Joe

Young's is pretty tasty stuff.  I also really like Rogue Chocolate Stout.  Probably the most non beer tasting chocolate beer I've had is Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout... it tastes like a chocolate bar in a glass.

Others I didn't care for as much include Odell Milk Chocolate Stout and Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout although both are much bigger beers than Youngs, Samuel Smiths or Rogues offerings (although Rogue does make a 12%? Double Chocolate Stout that I don't like as much)

I really really really like Left Hand Brewery's Milk Stout, especially the nitro version.

Hopefully a special package will be arriving next week and I'll have some new (to me) stouts to try.

EDIT:  The Young's is better in a can than a bottle to me. (The cans have a nitro charge in them... the bottles don't)

i also like Stones IMPERIAL RUSSIAN STOUT

LEFT HAND WAS GOOD BUT I WAS NOT QUITE AS FOND OF IT AS LANCASTER MILK STOUT, I ACTUALLY TRIED BOTH THE SAME DAY SO IT WAS A GREAT COMPARISON !! your right thogh left hand is good
never had the others you mentioned but most likley someday

i did also like SAM ADAMS DOUBLE BOCK
TRY LANCASTER MILK STOUT you wont be sorry, it has a black and white spotted cow on the bottle  GOOD STUFF!!!  its a top fav of mine

thanks your friend Joe

I could talk about stouts all day.  If it says stout on the label I'll give it a shot.  I only mentioned chocolate and milk/sweet stouts in my previous post because that's what you were talking about.  There's a ton of tasty stouts, and Stone's Russian Imperial is one of them.  They make(made?) a version with espresso in it that was also really tasty.  I have never tried the Lancaster Milk Stout (not available here) so I can't compare it to Left Hand but there's a big difference between the purple labeled Milk Stout and the black labeled Milk Stout Nitro.  The nitro makes it so smooth and creamy and mellows the flavor a bit (same is true of the Young's Double Chocolate...can is superior to bottle).  If somebody asked me to list my favorite beers it would be a pretty long list since I've probably tried a couple of hundred in the last 2 or 3 years but off the top of my head in no particular order and sticking to stouts I would say:

Rogue Chocolate Stout
Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro
Stone Russian Imperial Stout
Stone Russian Imperial Stout with Espresso
North Coast Old Rasputin
Southern Star Buried Hatchet Stout
Stone/Ken Schmidt/Iron Fist Mint Chocolate Imperial Stout
Speakeasy Barrel Aged Scarface Imperial Stout
New Belgium Lips of Faith Imperial Coffee Chocolate Stout
Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout
Steelhead Extra Stout
Knee Deep Imperial Tanilla
Deschutes The Abyss
Deschutes Black Butte XXIV (and XXII and XXIII and XXV)
Olvisholt Lava Smoked Imperial Stout
Lost Coast 8 Ball Stout
Clown Shoes Chocolate Sombrero Mexican Style Stout
Young's Double Chocolate Stout (can!)
Samuel Smiths Organic Chocolate Stout
Founders Breakfast Stout

And why not a few porters since they're often similar:

Laughing Dog Anubis Imperial Coffee Porter
Ballast Point Victory at Sea Imperial Porter
Founders Porter
Left Hand Black Jack Porter
Steelhead Porter
Stone Smoked Porter with Vanilla Bean

and I'm still happy every time I open a bottle of Stone Smoked Porter

I like a good Stout also and to me Left Hand brews up a good Milk Stout and I think Lancaster's version is lacking somewhere, almost watered down. Dont get me wrong I would still drink it
I cant put a hand on it but i think its just a little flat in the flavor dept..

in someways yes it does lack and even though its at the top im sure as time goes by i will find something better, i have and have not so far

i prefur stouts over porter but SMUTTYNOSE ROBUST PORTER takes all the honors, it my favorite dark and top fav porter
my favorite everyday Stouts have got to be either Guinness draught or Extra stout theres a toss up between the two or my newer one YOUNGS DOUBLE CHOCOLATE STOUT

i never buy much beer and dont drink alot at one time or for that matter every weekend/day, so it takes me more time to discover new ones and money ends up being another factor some are kinda out of my price range case wise when i cant find it in single bottle or 6 pack, im working on it LOL

I'll have to search for SN Porter next time around and give it a whirl!

I hear ya about the current prices out there.    Dogfish has to take top honors in this category.   I guess if you flood the market with all that crazy stuff and put a high price on it your gonna make money.
