Deep freeze has hit

jeez! & i thought we had it bad at around 12 below!
no feckin' chance of growing anything right now & i'm bored-just as well i've a good stash of fresh & frozen pods to heat up my grub/chow...

12 below would be a luxury....i wish. However, I've been to Scotland and the moderate temperatures you have means no hot beach weather summers either....although the 10pm sunsets and 4am sunrises in July were pretty cool. I think it was dark for like 2 hours?

more like dark for 6 hours!
may to early july last year was very hot for Scotland, a great early summer.had to shower all my plants 2-3 times a day, but my chilli harvests were pretty good...if only i'd had the foresight to grow the superhots!!
...and all the beaches were crammed with folk!15 mins away & i never got a sniff...

I hear ya SS...they are predicting the coldest temperatures here in Fort Worth in the last 13 years by the weekend.....

We measure in Fahrenheit, and, when it's 12 below zero, it's really cold

Good thing you don't measure in Kelvin then, because then it wouldn't get much colder than 0 degrees :)

16F below zero yesterday morning and 15F below this morning. Weather guessers are calling for colder temps the rest of the week.

I'd like to meet ol' "Global Warming" Al Gore and bop him once or twice right on the noggin. Let him shovel the almost three feet of snow on my driveway.

BRRRRRR!!!!!

Compared to that it's warm here. Low tonight 16, high tomorrow 35.

So this time we have about the same temperatures in the Lake Constance area and my desire to travel to northern Alabama is bearable at the moment.

Well I hear Florida is getting snowfall, and the strawberries are in danger of freezing. I spent my youth in the south and I like snow but the older I get, the less I like it cold. I've been checking out all the forecasters I can get my eyes on the last few days, and the arctic air is moving in on us in the midwest, and a good part of the rest o the US, and is likely to set a spell. Our most esteemed local prognosticator believes that here in Missouri we will not be getting our customary "January thaw"- nor even a February one. It was 10F this mornin', I've been wearing my long underwear since Christmas eve, and I may not take it off till March.

As soon as the child support is up I am living the state- I like four seasons but sometimes it just gets too interesting here. Southern Arizona may well be my destination for the last half of my life- my youth was in the southeast, and most of the middle has been in the midwest, I think South west sounds right tolerable!

(my son, however, may move to Minnesota. He was thrilled when the temps went below 20. Crazy kid!)

Same here for the this weekend AJ, Saturdays low teens should break 7 year records. It's supposed to drop some of that strange white stuff Thursday. I hope this isn't an indication of what's in store for us this February. Al Gore is on crack.

I am sitting at my computer with shorts and no shirt. I have the front door open and my girlfriend has just come in with some hideous hair extensions!! Hahaa, it's not cold here!!

I sincerely wish and pray that this year's summer is long and hot unlike last year. In Michigan we did not touch even 90 if I am not wrong.
PF, how does your leg behave in this cold?

Well Mother Nature has struck again. Our little snow amounted to 5-8 inches more on the ground, wind is up they say we're still classed as in a "blizzard". No travel advised anywhere. The snowplows were pulled off the roads as one got stuck. Local meat packer closed the plant but my son is a boiler operator so he's there until his replacement can get in to work...not looking like that might be soon. I sincerely hope we have a beautiful pepper summer for putting up with all of the cold and snow.

Quick note: They just closed ALL the highways in SW Minnesota, interstate as well as local.

we only got 4 inches with our "Alberta Clipper" but with the real temps in the single digits for tomorrow over 300 schools have closed. Wind chills predicted 15 to 30 below- that sort o thing just doesnt regularly happen in th midwest. Talked to Patrick who is one state west and north of me, he has 3 feet of snow, which he doesnt ever remember having either (Us middle of the country folk love to discuss the weather).

Pepperfever, it looks like I got my son to Minnesota and back between snows. Glad he came back LAST Thursday instead of this one! stay warm and safe, folks!

So, you want cold?

It is extremely dry here and temp 17....supposed to drop to single digits or close by tomorrow morning then back in the 40s Sunday....

I know this is not cold for a lot of you folks in the frozen north, but it is dang cold for Fort Worth....

I feel for anyone who is getting any of this cold. The snow looks like it's moving east so look out everyone. Our interstate and state highways are open now so that's a plus. They say still in poor winter driving condition but if it's open things will start moving again.

I'll be the last person to opine I like this weather, but I do appreciate is. As a former farmer (or the son of a farmer) hard winter freezes with a good snowfall that can melt into the ground does wonders for the soil. It also drives insects much deeper, so they do not emerge as early as they will in a very mild winter. We had our very best crops after the winters of '75-'76 and '76-'77, when we blessed/cursed with extremely cold weather and way above average snowfalls.

As far as the winter in Cincinnati, it has been, actually, quite mild. The coldest temp I have recorded is 4, I think the official low is a few degrees higher. Usually, we experience a night or two of sub-zero temps. Snowfall - maybe eight inches, max, total. In the past several years, I reckon we have had at least one snowfall in six of the eight that totals more than six inches.

This winter has, so far, been like the summer, abnormal. We usually have a dozen or more days, sometime two dozen, above 90 degrees. This year, we had two, and they were at the beginning of summer. We still have about two weeks before the average daily high and low temps start rising, but a long range forecast for the rest of the month says it will be very mild.

Mike
