DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

NOoooooo.... Kill all hornworms!! Those things will mow down your tomatoes and peppers faster than you can imagine!!

LOL!
They did some serious damage to my maters last year, only found 2 and both had eggs. Will have to seek and destroy any that I find LOL

Now I have John Denver singing in my head....lol

Not sure what music you listen to but if my above comment didnt get John denver out of your head, hear is another try at it.

The wheels on the bus go round and round
round and round
round and round
the wheels on the bus go round and round all through the town

I never learned it like dat o_O
I always thought it was:
The pods in my tummy go round and round
round and round
round and round
the pods in my tummy go round and round all around my crib

Edit:
... now when have you ever seen a beneficial lay so many eggs?
Never but wouldn't that be nice ^_^

I've got to get one of those hand-held UV lights. I want to see those vermin glowing before I smash them.

Dang you, Rob, now I've got that song stuck in my head.
As a bonus, grasshoppers light up with the uv too!
I elimimated a bunch of those at night also, and during the day they are too fast to catch!

Hahaha, I was succesful in preventing THAT song from doing the cranial replay loop!!

Chris,

Been reading about the bug eggs, now when have you ever seen a beneficial lay so many eggs?

That is what I was thinking....at first I thought "oh no"...then "maybe they are good ones"....then "wait a minute...there are a lot of them, and that doesn't seem right"

I got back from an overnight camping trip to Joshua Tree last night, what an awesome time. Do you have Joshua Trees there? Those things are so cool.

I gained a new level of respect for you desert dwellers. I don't know how you stay hydrated. I drank 3 gallons of water and half a gallon of gatorade while I was there and still felt dehydrated. Definitely not buying a ranch there.

Awesome!

Yep, there are lots of Joshua trees around here.
Yes, drinking lots of fluids helps, hiding inside during crzy wind or heat also.
However, I think every single person here has dry skin!

Someday we get to move away from here....and I can hardly wait!!
Before this, I lived on the Northern California Redwood Coast....
Terrible up there for peppers, but way nicer place to be!

It's the NEW World's Hottest Pepper. Plant one of the seeds now and have pods in 60 years.

Hehe.
But I have no yucca moths to polinate mine, the Joshuas will live here, but the moths don't.
Ever try to hand pollinate a Joshua?

It's done in the dark when the flowers open----on a ladder----over a forest of spines.

Never again. :snooty:

Mom lives in Az.just below the Hoover dam, about 50 minutes from Vegas, so we visit often. :D

She lives in a Joshua tree forest if you can call it that. They're everywhere. It's Dolan Springs...AKA Deadwood.

Really cool trees, I'd love some seeds to try here.

They look like bad grass for 3 years, then only grow an inch or so a year in ideal conditions.

Better to drive to a harvest area, buy a permit for a couple bucks, and rototill one out and bring it home.

Important hint:
Bring a compass and mark north on the trunk.

They have to be replanted in the same orientation.

I know, off topic a bit, but it may save someone years of frustration watching a little grassy thing do nothing, or harvesting one and planting any which way, only to have it twist and fall over.

Ummmm...... I totally agree with this!!!

Bahhhh.
Go up there often.
Nice to visit, too cold, wet and damp to stay there.

Peppers and Joshuas flowering here.

Yours?

Oh man, right on the coast, it never gets too warm, or too cold....I loved the rain, and all the green plants and trees EVERYWHERE!

Those Joshua trees are protected here....if you dig one up, you have to replant it.

Bwahahahhaa!! if those were peppers, I would be out there picking millions of them ;)

J.D. won't get me! I've been playing Gram and Emmy's (definitive version of) "Love Hurts" . . . which speaks given that Ev Bros and Roy Orbison are about sacred for me. Understand the frost-fear: we're having MAYBE our last one in morning. smh Fun event to take fishing black light out at night for hornworms = Bloodrock's "DOA" is great theme-song for that party! ;)
