DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)


Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Well..... I am watching the germ tray inpatiently!! LOL
Funny thing is I screwed up my germ tray chart... 3 of the Jigsaws are potentially mixed up with the Narangas and Trinidad Perfumes ....
4 jigsaws are certain, 6 Narangas are certain, and 3 Trinidad Perfumes are certain.... Dagnabit!
One seed of the 21 sown has popped... cots fell off, but the spike is alive... That one is either a Jigsaw or a Naranga....

Update:

I have been way to busy with non-garden related life stuff, but here we go with a small update....

Sowed seeds in the ground for Lettuces, Carrots, Leeks, Lemongrass, Radishes, Kohlrabi and Onions :)



And found this Purple Flash Pepper at Home Depot! :) Of course I had to have it....LOL



Getting close to time for pepper plant out time :)

Tomatoes should hit the dirt this weekend :)

LOL how many times did you say "ok I am done now"
I said I was done starting seeds a few weeks ago. got some Peach Bhut and 7pot Douglah seeds in the mail, and well I just had to get 2 of each going. Pushed my total now to 61 plants
 
Oh..... I released 1,500 ladybugs this morning! I hope some of them stick around and reproduce!!

My germ trays have seemed to slowed down though....hopefully Ramon's JA Habs and those Jigsaws pop soon :)

On the right is my super densely planted Turnip patch :) I harvested the first one on wednesday :)
On the left is some garlic and a few onions that will be ready to harvest soon!

Heck yeah, great minds!!

So, every year, for Mother's day, I get my gal some annual flower plants.... here are the 3 six-packs I got here this year.
I'll pot them up for here in the next couple days.

2 of last years 3 types survived the winter! so last years get to be here this year too!

Neem Oil....all I can say is WOW!!

I picked some up yesterday, sprayed the houseplants and seedlings I have under the lights this morning....the fungus gnats were wiped out in minutes! Not one to be seen anywhere!
I am sold on that stuff now!! WOW!!
 
I thought I was seeing double or too many ladybugs, lol ... Did you spray the pepper from home depot or just let the ladies do the cleaning? Anything live I get from HD I spray the living tar out of, the HD's down here have plant, mite and the occassional nematode, hehehe

I didn't spray it yet, but I did put a dozen ladybugs on it...lol
I will probably blast everything outside with the neem oil in a couple days though....after the ladybugs do their thing :)

Where did you get the ladies? I've seen very few here this year. A few years ago 6 or 8 years ago I converted a shed into a meat locker/ smoke house. The locker part had 6"s of insulation, during the winter I would go in there when the compressor was off, and there were thousands of lady bugs in there. Wish they were here now, mites are a plenty here this year. Glad to see you're planting now, can't wait to see it progress!

Hi Scott, I'm glad to have time to be the "frequent poster" again!! lol
I got 1,500 ladybugs for $12 at a local nursery...there is exactly one place around here to get them.
I would love to find thousands of ladybugs!!!!!
Here, most of them fly away pretty quickly....

I’d hold off on any spraying as long as they hang around, well that’s what I do. If a plant comes from HD I spray and quarantine it for a few days checking closely before bringing it into the collective, hehe.

That sounds like a great deal, I’ve yet to buy and release but if I saw them at that price locally I’d probably give it a go. Here it’s the wild ones that stop by but don’t stay more than a day or two, wish I could get them to stay. I don’t spray anything when I see dem around. BTW I’m using mineral oil only cause it’s cheaper, lol.

How early did you release them? They don't fly in the dark and they seek out moisture, so I've heard it's best to wait until evening, spray all of the plants and soil down with water, and then release them. They've been really plentiful in my garden so I haven't had to release any so far. I actually just found a cluster of eggs on an arugula plants that I took out. I shoved the leaf deep into a cluster of tomatoes, but the winds have probably blown it away by now. The flowering arugula seems to attract them, but it was becoming a weeding nightmare.
