DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)


Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Ok, We went from temps in the 90's to now for the next week it is going to be 60's and 70's....
Also, a chance of rain tomorrow and the next day.

The good news is the low temps will be around 49°, so no worries there.

I may have to run the plants inside if it is going to rain much though....

It is definately a challenge.. the desert has its own set of unique rules....lol
Then to make it interesting, it is high desert....
So you get the super hot temps , high winds, but throw in some colder weather too....

I am still shocked at the vast #'s of various insects that can survive, and even thrive, here.....
 
I'm excited about the highs being 70's and the possibility of rain this week. It's the perfect time to finish hardening everything off and maybe even get the last 4 in the ground. I know my water source is rather alkaline, so my plants could use some nice acid rain.

So I have been bringing in wheelbarrows of manure into there and am up to 10 loads so far (5 loads a day the last 2 days).
I am thinking 5 more loads, then till it in, water system in after that, and it'll be ready :)

So here is a photo of a pile of poop....lol....did that make everyones day? :)

Tilled in about a half a load of manure into my beds this year. Hoping that it was the right thing to do. I tilled some more in my one garden this past weekend and pulled some weeds. The soil is black and full of worms right now, hope that is a good thing

On the porch. The weird hot cold weather is causing lots of leaf drop and bushing out, in the older plants....The seedlings are starting to grow a bit faster though...

It rained a tiny bit here! Free watering of the plants and garden...lol
Perfect weather to plant the tomatoes. I'm hoping to get them inground this week.

Oh, Manure is a good thing!!! Without it here, I would just have sandy clay....

I think I need to count them and see if I still have 1000+ after the wind, bugs, damping off, and pepper stomping doggie!!

OK, I just counted them..... looks like 1259 +/- in various stages of growth.... But keeping in mind there are some cups with 10 seedlings in them...lol
Those would be Orange Bell, AjiJoe Mystery, Pequin and Japones varieties...I will separate them soon though...

I'm a little (lot) envious of your growing space. I have about 1200 sq. ft. to play with. I'm at about 5,000ft so I'm well aware of how drastically the weather can turn. Spring is always unsettled and every year I think it's looking good in April only to get crapped on in May. Despite a lot of 80 degree days as early as April it's not unusual to have an 80 degree day followed by a 30 degree night in the Spring. And windy from March till May. It makes it's more fun? :banghead:

Lots of space, but the dirt isn't the greatest.(or the very worst either).
Thank goodness the family who owned this house years ago had cattle, goats, chickens etc....
So everywhere there were animal pens is a good place to grow food!
plus we have 3 goats and 6 chickens. The neighbor's 2 ponies and 13 sheep....all that manure is available too :)
Without it, I would be growimg tumbleweeds...lol

Yeah, the up and down spring weather keeps you on your toes.... I actually had to build a fire in the fireplace tonight...geez

At least summer, fall and winter are more predictable...lol

That darn wind....it is really bugging me this year....maybe because I decided to go much much bigger on gardening, but dang....the wind is loud, annoying, and just not fun....
