DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

I didn't take a picture, but it looks like those. Mine were a bit lighter in color, I think close to hatching. My phone doesn't do so well with close ups.

I’d hold off on any spraying as long as they hang around, well that’s what I do. If a plant comes from HD I spray and quarantine it for a few days checking closely before bringing it into the collective, hehe.

That sounds like a great deal, I’ve yet to buy and release but if I saw them at that price locally I’d probably give it a go. Here it’s the wild ones that stop by but don’t stay more than a day or two, wish I could get them to stay. I don’t spray anything when I see dem around. BTW I’m using mineral oil only cause it’s cheaper, lol.

Ok, I got home from town, isolated the new plant, and hosed it down with the neem oil :)
I bought it, because it is also good for use on dogs apparently! So if it's good for plants and dogs it is like a 2 for 1 deal :)
Plus for24 oz concentrate, it was $14 at home depot... 50% bigger container for 33% less than at the nursery, and the same concentration...
mix 2-4 tablespoons into a gallon of water, so it seemed cost effective.

How early did you release them? They don't fly in the dark and they seek out moisture, so I've heard it's best to wait until evening, spray all of the plants and soil down with water, and then release them. They've been really plentiful in my garden so I haven't had to release any so far. I actually just found a cluster of eggs on an arugula plants that I took out. I shoved the leaf deep into a cluster of tomatoes, but the winds have probably blown it away by now. The flowering arugula seems to attract them, but it was becoming a weeding nightmare.

I watered first, then released them at 8am...probably could have done it in the evening....
They should stick around to reproduce in the turnip patch though, it is dense, moist, and lots of food for them in there.

Scott,
Here’s a few examples; Click here, here, here or here, The color can vary a little, the ones I've seen in my garden are super small and not as yellow looking as these.

Oh, thank you!
I will be hoping to see many of those around here!! (fingers crossed!)

OK, for the FIRST TIME EVER, I found some orange manzano peppers at Vallarta supermarket!! Woohoo!!
So I grabbed a couple...most of them had soft spots, but there were a few good ones in the bin.
I am very excited!! LOL

IMAG1693_zps87449666.jpg

Should give you a nice long pretty hot burn...with a very unique flavor. My first Manzano I grabbed on the way home from work, and their bell pepper appearance and feel fooled me pretty good. I had to stop and buy a sandwich halfway home to kill the stomach burn.

StupidJerk sent me a little Orange Manzano powder a while back, and man I sure loved the flavor of it!!
Ever since then I have been trying to get the seeds he sent to germ, and survive, to no avail.
So needless to say I was overjoyed to find fresh ones!
And even more overjoyed that the "King" offered to mail me some plants!!!!
YAY!!!

Oh, and Sawyer sent me a package that arrived today :)
Well, it looks like I will be breaking the no more sowing seeds declaration....again....
Good thing we have a pretty long season here...lol
Frost comes around mid November, so I should still have time to germinate and grow pods before the frost date :)
Plus I have plans for a massive plant overwintering project.

"Yes sweety, those are all Bonsai plants, all over the house"....bwahahahahaha

Watch for the sales when the season starts kicking in. Sometimes you can find those and the orange habs for $1.99/lb. That's why I'm not growing any, too cheap to worry about growing my own when there are other peppers I can't buy in stores.

BTW, make sure you deseed the manzanos if you dry them for powder. They have those thick black seeds that add a texture, color, and flavor that detracts from the powder in my opinion.

Wow, I hope they have them later for that cheap! These were $4.39/lb
So those 2 peppers were $1.39
In fact, I just hope they keep selling them...lol
But in reality, I want to grow them to ensure that I have some for drying :) And of course because I have gone pepper crazy...lol

Last year, I dried all my pods with the seeds in, and made flakes....but like you said, it tastes better deseeded, so this year I will be spending a lot of time (hopefully) deseeding before drying them! Plus, I can then share the seeds :)

Plus i'll try to germ the seeds from these manzanos.... I won't give up until I succeed in getting some to survive....hahaha

So, as I have said before, I am adding 3 more garden spots this year.
One of the new spots needs some amending (it's pretty sandy) and it is where I am going to plant the army of Red Bhuts.
So I have been bringing in wheelbarrows of manure into there and am up to 10 loads so far (5 loads a day the last 2 days).
I am thinking 5 more loads, then till it in, water system in after that, and it'll be ready :)

So here is a photo of a pile of poop....lol....did that make everyones day? :)

IMAG1696_zps4c98897e.jpg

They had them at Vons the other day for $2.99...which ain't bad considering I took of pic of their price last year at $14.99 at the same store!!!

2.99/lb is great for Von's/Ralph's/etc. I can't afford to buy produce at those places normally. It's amazing how much cheaper Smart & Final, Vallarta, and Food4Less are for fruits and veges. I went to Ralph's one day and they had Habs 4 for $1, then I drove over to Vallarta and they had them for $2.49/lb. That is a massive difference when they probably came from the same farm.

Wow, our Vons has none! I still can't believe the lack of variety for hot peppers here considering the Huge hispanic population, and me dagnabit, they should cater to me and bring in more hot peppers...lol

Same here...Vallarta, food4less, Winco etc....
We shop at around 8 stores to get the lowest prices we can...lol

Habs...gee wiz...they are usually around $4/lb. but sometimes at vallarta you can get 7 lbs of jalapenos for a dollar....

Sooooo..... nobody likes my photo of the pile of manure??? hahahaha

What are you talkin about...I love that $h1t!

Bwahahaha....good one!!

Ok, update time.....

I deseeded the 2 orange manzanos from Vallarta, soked the seeds in some water and peroxide, then stuck ALL of them in a baggie using wet coffee filters. Then placed that in one of the germ trays....first time tryimg that method.
There are a ton of seeds in there, so maybe some will sprout and survive....maybe....

Also, Sawyer is a bad influence, or enabler, lol!!!
He sent me 16 types of seeds, which are now in a germ tray....hahahaha
They should have enough time for a nice fall harvest....if not, there will be a ton of overwinters all over the house!!

I will have to count, somehow, but I think I am now at around 100 varieties/strains etc....

Yep, definately spiraling out of control.....

aint nothing wrong with that pile of shit. heck ive fallen in bigger piles than that. everything is looking great

LOL, Yep, that is a little pile :)
I wish I had gotten the neighbors to bring over the Bandini Mountain of pony poop they had stockpiled last year, but they gave it away before we decided to expand our garden areas.....

I have a vivid memory of my sister running through a field at age 8.....
She tripped.....
She fell....
She landed....
Face first in a fresh green cowpie.....
I am still laughing about that one decades later....lol

thats a great story! since you bring up shit stories i shall to you a short one. this really sucked but the truth needxs to be told
