DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

No, dagnabit :(
I dug into a couple of the pellets, and the 2 I checked were just sitting in there looking plump and yellow....
I hope they pop....
Damit ... that sucks :/ I hit "like this," hopefully that'll get dem going ;) This just has to pop mon, WG want's to see jigsaw make it 1,260.5 +/- lolz. Then the T-shirt can read "1.5 K +/- Pepper Club, including Jigsaw FTW \o/"

Wow, Chris, your glog moves fast! Had to go back about four pages to get caught up! Everything is looking great. 1259 plants??? Wow! That'll keep ya busy. Nice score on the store-bought Manzanos. Must be a new commercial grower in So Cal as I have found them in our local store, as well. And yes, seeds are dried and saved. No more sowing for me this year. Ugh.

Oh, and nice steaming pile! ;)

Yeah, I am impatiently checking the Jigsaw seeds, and your JA Habs several times a day...LOL
Homestly, I want both types to pop just as bad!!

hahaha.... Yep, I am a habitual blabbermouth poster ;)

I was totally overjoyed on the manzanos....After deseeding, I soaked em in peroxide, rinsed em, and put all of them into a baggie with coffee fllters n a germtray (thhey are in 1 of the photos below)..... Maybe some will pop and thrive... maybe....

Thank Goodnes KingDenniz graciously offered to aquire and send me some Manzano plants!! They should be here tomorrow... I checked the tracking#, and this morning they were in Santa Clarita (an hour south of here) :)
And this cooler weather is absolutely perfect temps for shipping plants. Last week would have been way to hot, and friday would be too....so it was perfect timing!!

I can't believe you are that close to the mystical number of 1300 plants and aren't adding more. I mean, aren't you committed to this?

Those pictures are crazy - tons of peppers. Wow.

Thanks Andy!

Well...... I do still have Germ trays loaded up ;)
Weird though.... Germination seems to have stalled a bit..... must be the up and down weather/temps.... But there are plenty of seeds soaking away in there :)

Fresh tray full of seeds Sawyer just sent me!!

Tray with Ramon's JA Habs (upper left 24 pellets) and a few other things...

Tray with Fatalii.net seeds (at the top) and Hab types from pepperjoe (those are lagging on germing too)

Tray with the infamous Choc. Bhuts from Pepperlover ( 0% germ rate so far), and a few other things... all lagging on germing....

Thats an amazing amount of plants, lucky you don't have to have them under growlights. Sounds like you have some good compost aging with all the different kinds of manure.
I miss the days when we were able to get the "unique" stuff when the B & B Circus came to town. It was first come first serve. We new the security at the main gate at the old "Chicago Stadium"...we were before the 1st in line.......grew some big stuff with some of that sheit...manure.........."Lion's , Tiger's and Bear's"................lol

Wow, Predator Manure!! That would probably grow some "Mean" plants...LOL
I would love for some elephants to "drop off" some gifts here ;)

Wow, after a month of being lost due to the inept substitute mail carrier here, a package of pods, powders, and seeds that Sawer so very generously shared with me, has actually been delivered!
It says "wrong address" on it.... meaning they delivered it to the wrong address (my address on the package was perfectly correct!)

The seeds and powders are in perfect condition, so they will be sown and eaten respectively :)

So, a month in the postal system means fresh pods are not so fresh anymore.....
Here is what they look like, but I think I can get the seeds out, clean em up, and plant them. After all, in the wild, this would be how they propagate anyway :)
I grouped and numbered them as best I could, so hopefully Sawyer remembers what he sent :) and maybe we can identify them.

Sad to read about the slow germination but I feel positive about the JA Hab and if you don't get it to pop, there's always more. Great giftages from Sawer, enjoy!

Got a chuckle out of the action going on in here yesterday ;)

Chris I don't see any reason for the seeds not to germ, your using the same stuff I use?? I like the covers because they keep the moisture in, and then the transplant is easy.

Great score from Sawyer, it's shame the UPS sent it to Europe and back before it arrived....silly.

I am convinced the JA Habs will pop.... I sowed all of them, so it is likely...just all my germing seems to have slowed way down with the weird weather....
Sawyer sent me some awesome seeds too :) I believe I am definately over 100+ varieties now, since he helped feed my pepper obsession....lol

Yep, same pellets, same trays, and same technique of removing the wrapper when the seeds pop.
All my germing was done this way for this grow, so no reason for it to stop now, other than the weird weather!
Shoot, I have used a whole CASE of 36 count pellet refills this year...lol
Something like 48 boxes of them, plus some boxes I picked up separately.....

I may use seed startimg mix and tiny dixie cups next year....maybe....

Funny thing is that the package Sawyer sent got misdelivered somewhere near here, likely within a mile or 2...
Dang substitute mail guy..... I know it wasn't the usual mail lady, because she is awesome at her job, and she even told me she had to reprimand the new dude already, a few times.....

Hey, Chris. That's sad it took so long for that package to arrive. I'm amazed the pods look as good as they do. If you look at this post and this one, I think you can figure out what the pods are. Here's my best guess, #1 - Aji Lemon, #2 - Chocolate Hab, #3 - Jonah?, #4 (larger) - not white bhut, #4(smaller) - Jonah?, #5 - 7 Pot Yellow, #6 - could be Tobago seasoning or romy6 (Jamie) mystery annuum. I'm pretty sure either #3 or #4(smaller) is a Jonah and also the two #4s are different, since I only had two not white bhuts to start with and I didn't send them both. I could be wrong on that. If Jamie stops in, he'll probably know better than I, since I got them from him.

The three Jigsaw seeds you sent have been in the mix since 4/28 and nothing is happening yet. The red, orange, and yellow manzano seeds I got from Trade Winds Fruit and planted in the same flat at the same time have started germinating. So there is that.

Where do you keep them? I have a couple of bar stools with a box on it in a south window. I also have a desk lamp with a 60 watt grow light to help with some heat and light. No hi-tech stuff here...I do keep them nice and wet until poppage.

Awesome! Some were falling apart, some were more intact, some had no seeds, some had tons of seeds.....
I cleaned up all the seeds that looked ok, and sowed them! lol
I labeled them with #'s and right/left etc....
Also sowed all the dried seeds you sent :)

And best of all, we had Spaghetti with homemade sauce from last years tomatoes, and I put a nice teaspoon of that Douglah powder on mine.
Man that stuff is tasty!!!!

I have them all in the dining room.
One 72 cell tray on a heat mat, three 72 cell trays sitting on top of the flourescent light fixtures for the seedlings (nice and warm from the ballasts), and four 36 cell trays on a small table also....oh, and one more 72 cell tray on a small table in there too.....

All the more cherished varieties are in the locations with warmth provided.....

Seems to have worked great until the weather went wacky a few weeks ago....
But I know the lagging stuff will pop, just might take a little while.

OK, got everything labeled with names now!
Thanks Sawyer, I really appreciate the kindness :)

So I passed by your neck of the woods yesterday. Went to kernville with some buddies to go whitewater. Hella fun. You're in Lancaster arena right !! Or is that Carson !!? Anyways. You guys are far hahaha. Like you said I saw tracking and by today you should get it. Wish I brought it on my trip. Could've dropped it off along the fwy.

At the local Mexican market here those guys stay less than 4.99/lb. like they said. I've gotten them as cheap as $1.49/lb. Shane makes the best smoked manzano powder !! Even my 4 year old uses it with her food

Yep, We are in the Lancaster area, North of town, If you went up the 14, then you came pretty close to here, we are 6-7 miles from the freeway.
If you ever head up this way again, let me know, you can come by and visit!
Hope you had fun in Kernville, i've never been there.

I'll Be stalking the mail carrier today! LOL

I would love to find those for $1.49/lb !!
I'll have to keep an eye out at Vallarta just in case they keep carrying them.
But the plants you sent will hopefully provide a bunch fresh off the plant :)
I love those things, they must be about the thickest walled hot pepper around.

Lots of space, but the dirt isn't the greatest.(or the very worst either).
Thank goodness the family who owned this house years ago had cattle, goats, chickens etc....
So everywhere there were animal pens is a good place to grow food!
plus we have 3 goats and 6 chickens. The neighbor's 2 ponies and 13 sheep....all that manure is available too :)
Without it, I would be growimg tumbleweeds...lol

Yeah, the up and down spring weather keeps you on your toes.... I actually had to build a fire in the fireplace tonight...geez

Chris, for years I thought my grandmother was some kind of wizard when she built her new place after my grandfather died. I mean, she toss a seed, sucker'ed be ready to pick in a month! As she was dying, this past March, she always asked about my plants. In nursing home after asking me how my plants were one day and TOLD me we were gonna have a Blackberry Winter and me not to rush it, she said, "Honey, I been meaning to confess this to somebody. Now you remember my chickens. And honey, I love plants. I do. But that 'ere 3 acres yer Pawpaw won in a poker game was a hog lot and that feller kept cows down 'ere too." I just looked at her. She kept that a secret for over 50 years, with the rest of us, blown-away that she could grow ANYTHING on that land, seemed "easy" but with all that, she still worked it like you're working it! And this spring just blows, period. :banghead: Pretty plants! Hope you can get them in ground, in pots, in something soon! ;)

Yippee!! The Post Office managed to deliver the plants KingDenniz sent me!! :) :) :)
The three nursery Manzanos arrived in perfect condition. The Manzano KingDenniz germed and grew himself, had a broken top, so I trimmed it off and put it in a cup of 50% peat 50% garden soil to try and make a clone :) The Red Fatalii he grew and sent, also suffered from post office "topping", so I did the same with it :)
Hopefully the clone attempts take root! I put the clone tops in indirect lighting in the dining room, not too weak and not too strong....I'll move them under the lights after they hydrate and recover a bit.

The plants all got some 32oz shoes, and are in indirect lighting on the porch, hydrating and resting after being in a box for a coule days.

THANKS KINGDENNIZ!!

Edit: Forgot the photos...LOL

Hope you can get them in ground, in pots, in something soon! ;)

Oh that is too funny!
Retired Animal areas are the best!!!!
Your Grandma was a Gardening Genius :)

The best garden I ever had was when I lived in the Santa Rosa are with my girlfriend (at the time).
It was a few acres of old cattle ranch, and the back pasture hadn't been used in years....Also, every couple winters it got flooded pretty good too.
I picked out a fenced in 1/2 acre, and then I used a crazy italian "Jarre" machine to first mow the field with one attachment.
Then put on the rortiller attachment and tilled it all.
That year we grew Tomato plants 12 feet tall, with no trellises, stakes etc...And every variety of them got 12 feet tall!
Peppers grew like crazy too.
Pretty much everything we planted grew fast and furious.
That was some awesome soil, and I didn't have to do anything to it but add water.

I think plant out time is upon me, I just need to put in watering systems, till some areas, put up one fenceline, plant everything, water everything etc etc etc etc....LOL

On a happy note, some of my turnips are about harvest ready (I love turnips!)
And my lettuce varieties are all popping up now, as well as the radish varieties.
I can almost taste the fresh salads.

So I passed by your neck of the woods yesterday. Went to kernville with some buddies to go whitewater. Hella fun. You're in Lancaster arena right !! Or is that Carson !!? Anyways. You guys are far hahaha.

I'm sort of near Smokemaster in the San Fernando Valley, where we are supposed to hit 100f on Monday.
