I think Pepperfreak was talking about your landlord when he said 'as*hole'.

Right! He sounds like one. Who cares how big the dog is as long as you take care of it and it doesn't destroy the place.

I just lost my dog to cancer this week...

sorry to hear that your dog died.

Very true. Once it has received the proper vaccinations bring it around as many people and dogs as you can.

yep bring the dog around other animals, people & different objects like tools & whatever so they're not affraid of anything.

Not a fan of cats. They kill wildlife. Alot.

so true!! if the cat goes outside they kill alot of wildlife, & animals that other wildlife rely on for food.
they're right up there with the wolves for killing w/o eating the animal.

* WARNING * PUPPIES CHEW THE F**K OUT OF STUFF AND PEE EVERYWHERE.

no they dont if you train them well from the day you get the dog, give them the proper dog toys & buy a kennel!

There is something you should know as well. You can find pure bred dogs at shelters. Finding the specific breed you want can be difficult though and may mean taking a long drive out of state to get what you want. Not the most practical move but if you want a pure bred dog and still want to get your dog from the pound it isn't always impossible.

if you're looking for a certain breed, call the breeders or look online, most pure breed breeders also have rescue programs for that breed.
where they take in dogs that have been abused, neglected or no longer wanted (some breeders have contracts that state if you're gonna sell the dog they want 1st choice to buy the dog back) they give the dog medical attention if needed or socialize/train the dog if needed

will not allow us to have more then a 25 pound dog.

no offense but a real dog weighs more than 25 lbs :P

The more inconsistent you are with training them the longer they will continue this behavior. What my family has done with our dogs over the years is keep them strictly in the kitchen at the start of their potty training. We have linoleum flooring and this makes cleaning up accidents a lot easier. What is important is to take them out regularly and you will avoid a lot of accidents.

IMO never let your dog relieve themselves in the house!
buy a kennel to fit their size, not too big where they have alot of room to run around, just enough for them to stand up move around some & with the water/food dish in there.

the dog stays inside the kennel most of the time until its potty trained! dog stays in the kennel at night, 1st thing in the morning bring it outside & tell it to go potty & praise the dog & treats for doing so. then you can leave the dog out of the kennel for a short length of time (couple hours) then put the dog back in the kennel.
after a couple hours take the dog outside again to potty & praise it, if it didnt go potty put it back in the kennel & try it again in in a short time bring the dog outside to go potty. then it can stay out of the kennel for sometime, but back into the kennel.
keep this up until its potty trained.

the dog wont go potty in its kennel, it learns to hold it & learns outside is the place to relieve its self. this is where kennel size matters, if its to big then the dog will do its thing in 1 corner while sleeping in another spot.

never allow it to relieve its self in the house cuz it'll take more time to train the dog to know outside is the place to go potty not in your house!

I was planing on getting old cushions that he/she can chew on and train him/her to only chew on that cushion!

never allow your dog to chew on any of your items! this will be a very bad habit to break & only piss you off more! get the dog its own dog toys.
I'll tell you the cheapest toys can be a plastic gatorade bottle (w/cap label remove but watch for piece being chewed off) & cardboard boxes (like ceral boxes) my dog goes nuts over them.

if the dog starts chewing on your personal items, I found grabbing the dog by its lower jaw & pouring tabasco sauce down its mouth & put some on the item they chewed on & scolding them, has work well for my dogs. the chewing stopped within weeks & never again.
by chance your dog like hot sauce use something else like sour apple or ?

I agree with you on all the above. I just think that no matter what you do(at least for the majority of people) your puppy will at some point have an accident or two in your house during the potty training period. Linoleum flooring is easier to clean than carpet.

I also agree with not allowing your dog to chew anything that is yours. I cannot hop on board with the Tabasco idea. I would suggest puppy owners to treat the dog like a child. The crating method is very helpful but when the dog is out of the crate keep a constant eye on him or her. Also don't leave anything around that they can chew. The problem is they get creative and may go for a chair leg, etc. I have had sucess with simply pulling them away before they can begin and putting a dog chew toy in their mouth.

I guess I should also point out that I am by no means and expert on the matter. My dogs are not angels; however, they never have accidents in the house and they don't destroy or touch my stuff. I would recommend you use whatever training methods you are comfortable with. The key is consistency.

All the wife comments remind me of an oldie but a goodie (prolly missing bits):

Farmer seeks wife

Must be able to cook and clean.
prefeable have own pickup and boat
Send picture of pickup and boat

Derek, some dogs are naughty, others not. Some like to chew others not so much. They are all individuals.

No matter what breed, or size etc, make sure you read more than 3 books on dog training. Some advocate treat training (instant, but not sustained success) clicker training (at least you dont become a vending machine) and others work on behavioural modelling and changing. So read from the different styles. I suggest you DO NOT READ Barbara Woodhouse.

Good trainers include Californian head of the AKC from the 1960's and 70's William Koehler who also trained a bunch of Disney dogs. Just remember his biiiig message is consistency and a fair go. Not over correction and cruelty as misinformed ppl suggest.
Also animal behaviorist Patricia McConnell has some good stuff to say. Check out her radio program online from PBS radio in Wisconsin(?)--Calling All pets -- www.wpr.org/pets/

As for puppies being messy and house training, what goes in must come out--soon. This means that after a feed put the pup outside. Watch it, make a note of how long it takes and then you'll know how long you got before it needs to do 1's or 2's.

I have a great dane x mastiff (100lbs approx) and as a pup she NEVER peed or pooped inside, Nor as an adult!

Good luck with your choice.

RS

**not an expert, but I get to see and interact with about 40-60 dogs for an extended time period on a weekly basis.

All good points and I appreciate your stance against over correction and cruelty. You may not be an expert but 40-60 dogs gets you darn close.

Ty Josh, but that is a very minor point.

Big thing is to remember not all dogs will respond to the same training method, hence read across a variety of methods. I've seen s...ts of things that need some discipline (time out in toilet for a minute or two -- no hitting!!) and some real softies that if you even changed the pitch of your voice they would tremble, not because of mistreatment, just that they're sensitive. So, saying STOP IT to one dog will do nothing whilst to its sibling, it may seem like the end of the world!

BTW: cat or dog, get its lady bits or man bits removed. no need for more unwanted pets.
