I have had 6 dogs in my life and one cat. Cats are interesting creatures, but not too interactive unless THEY feel like it. All the dogs I have had have had amazing personalities. They really do become part of the family. I say this with a heavy heart as I just lost my dog to cancer this week...

sorry about the loss of your dog dude.. one of my dogs just passed away as well..( last year, but it seems like yesterday ).

depends on how often you will be away from home more than a few hours. Cats dont need to be let out for potty. If you get a dog get a mutt. They are the best but avoid the chihuahua/rat terrier combo I got at the pound. After 5 years she still hates me. She is the worst of both breeds. For the record chihuahuas are not rodents, they do go pee by holding them out the window either. They are very affectionate and prefer to play with only other chihuahuas. How a dog turns out is mostly due to how it was raised.
The foster kitty in my life is begining to shed and thats a pain in the rear. He is still eyeballing the pepper plants and is somewhat distructive. I hear things falling all the time in the basement where his litter box is, he is adorable but a huge menace. What ever you chose, I dont recomend kids and this is from experience lol.

Very true. Once it has received the proper vaccinations bring it around as many people and dogs as you can.

Probably about 6 hours on Monday And then Wednesday, but most of the time I'll be there for the dog!

yeah they just recently banned the pit bull breed here in Ontario.. and i say instead of banning them, throw the owners and most of the breeders in jail.. its all about how you raise em...

I agree, I think they're trying to pass the banning law here in the states as well.

I know I will raise my dog or cat very well.

Not a fan of cats. They kill wildlife. Alot.

Remember, a pet is for life, although I think you got that concept already.

Cat or dog, it will be more dependent on you than a child.

Cats are cheaper to feed, but you can't teach a cat to play fetch, frisbee, etc.

everyone is different, but I prefer short-haired dogs and poodle x's are good if they have the poodle coat. Not to overlook the dog's personality, which of course is key. Your desired pet may look like the ass end of... Moyboy(?) and you'd love it just the same.

BIG TIP: GET A DOG THAT MATCHES YOUR ENERGY LEVEL

In other words, dont get a hyperactive dog if you like to laze on the sofa. It will go nuts! Same too, dont get a couch potato animal if you go running a lot, Your dog will not keep up.

Remember, this is your daily activity level, not your weekend one, or your desired one.

Do your research on breeds. Pound puppys are a good option, but make sure to assess their temperament as best you can. Dont, please dont get any animal at a pet store. The are inevidably from pet mills.

Very good advice mate. I have an American x English Staffy named Jack. He comes to work everyday with me too :P
He pretty much runs the show..

I paid $50 for him (still not born yet) from a local breeder, he aint got no papers or nuts but he is a champ. Until he pisses on my bed :)

I'd always go for a dawg. I like cats but they don't have a too close relation to you and my wife is allergic. We have a Rhodesian Ridgeback. She is 5,5 years old and fixed. The best ever family dog you could imagine. So with kids go for a Ridgeback! But be aware they could conspirate! Whenever my six years old son is a helluvamess my dog is too....

I grew up with both cats and dogs, both have pros and cons...for a college student yeah cats be the perfect pet...they can handle your weird hours and study habits, they are independent..meaning they will come to you when they are ready. They'll help with your homework..they love nothing better than to distract you when you are writing! My cat, Whiskers, loved to ride in the car with me but not all cats like rides. Drawbacks: they need clean litter boxes but you don't have to go outside to scoop poop. Just empty and put fresh litter in the box.
Dogs are not independent, they need you! Take them out for a walk multiple times a day, clean up poop, feed them, brush them, take them with you when you leave. Drawbacks: depending on the breed they may be barkers..not good in an apartment! You have to have time for multiple walks each day, have to scoop the poop. Dogs need brushing if they are long haired. If you travel with them you have to stop and let them out for a potty break along the way. They want and expect much more of your attention than a cat.

That said we currently have 3 long haired dogs, 2 from abusive situations, who are totally spoiled. It can get hectic when we take all 3 in the car but wouldn't give them up. Love those dogs and we don't have a cat because we like to travel a bit and it's easier with the dogs.

Pound dogs or cats are the best! We have one registered Pom but only because her owners gave her away. No matter which animal you get for a pet they need shots, good vet care, spayed or neutered and love. My biggest peeve is those who get pets and won't spend the money to take care of them. If they can't afford to care for a pet then don't get one.

I can't believe nobody has said tarantula! No smell, no mess to clean up, you can leave them for weeks at a time, food bill is next to nothing, they won't crap or tinkle everywhere...what's not to love?

Here's one of my favorite, a Grammostola pulchra female. Doesn't it look like she's covered in rich black silk? Oh my....:)

Is she giving you huggies?

Cats are smarter and have better personalities, but they puke up hairballs and poop in a litter box.

If you have a fenced yard, or relish the thought of lots and lots of walks, get a dog.

* WARNING * PUPPIES CHEW THE F**K OUT OF STUFF AND PEE EVERYWHERE.
