Douglah Cappy 2010

Pepper Ridge Farm said:
Do not even think I got that many pods off the plant. I only had one plant of that variety so obviously also had poor germination rate with it as well. Pods were very tasty for the ones that did ripen fully. Nothing against this strain of douglah just not betting the farm on a good crop if that's all I grow. I was very grateful for the seeds and the chance to grow it out myself.

Well, Cappy, that's all I was referring to when I said something to play with. Seems there is a challenge with these to get a good crop of pods with them. As far a germination rate goes with your seeds, I planted 2 seeds and got 2 plants. :) Since they seem to be less productive than other varieties I'll start some more tonight and see if I can get production levels up on these bad boys. ;)

I hope you find a freak giant Douglah plant that we all can all get seed from SS. Sounds good if you went 2 for 2 on the germination, maybe I helped bring vigor back in your seed. Definitely plant some more.:P

Love all those pics, looks like a little army. I hear ya on all the Jala talk too, never grown a really good yet after all these years.

Lookin' forward to pics of the Douglah forest!

Hey Cappy - FYI about the Atami mix - I found this on a weed growing site - "atami hydromixx hp is pro-mix hp made by premier horticulture and packaged for atami.

it IS pro-mix HP, just in atami packaging. ive been using it since it came to my local hydro store like 2 years ago."

The Atami Hydromix HP has more perlite per the two bags. Pro-Mix says it is 75-85% sphagnum peat moss, and the Hydromix is only 70% peat moss and 30% perlite by volume. The Pro-Mix also contains Mycorise Pro and vermiculite and both dolomitic and calcitic limestone and wetting agents. The Hydromix HP has starter nutrition, macro and micro, gypsum and dolomitic limestone and wetting agent. Peace of mind knowing that my new Hydromix is made by the same company that makes Pro-Mix.:)

I have had my Billyboy Douglah seeds (thanks again Nova) germinating for about a week, I think LOL Nothing yet. How long do they normally take to germ up? They are in a good grow mix on a heating mat, staying moist but not wet at 85 degrees.

I have billyboy Douglah seed from both billyboy himself via AJ last year and NoVa this year from the auction. I planted 6 cells of AJ source on Feb. 11 and only two seedlings are hanging on. Poor germination rate with this source from what I can tell. The first emerged after about a week and the other maybe 5 days later. That is why I contacted Nova about some more seed, have not re-planted anymore yet hoping I can nurture the ones I have up. NoVa has grown beautiful Douglah seedlings so his seed is viable. Anybody heard or seen from billyboy lately:?:

Hey Cappy, since you're trying to stabilize these Douglahs, you have a pic of the ideal color and shape for the pod you're shooting for?

Hi Guys :onfire: Im still hanging around

Glad your getting right into the Douglahs. Fantastic variety to grow and the pods ripen up awesome.

The seed your growing Cappy is produced from a cutting I took from bents original plant which we both believe to be the very first Douglah plant to be grown here on Australian shores :P It proved to be a very difficult plant to clone with only one being successful. I have since cloned that plant multiple times and the same situation being very hard to successfully clone.

The seed plants Ive grown all are very productive and produce those awesome pimply pods that I adore;) I also have been growing a very special Jonah variety which produces pods exactly the same as the Douglah except the Jonah pods go from a very light lime green through to orange and then onto a deep red. My guess is the person by the name of Jonah who produced that amazing variety also had something to do with the Douglah as the pods are identical in shape and texture just colour being the difference!

If I can be of assistance just ask.

I got a 100% germination rate on these seeds, with the first popping up at about 10 days, and the last at about 5 weeks.

Hey billyboy, good to see you around again. I am very excited to get your and Bent's Douglah growing here in the states. I have seen the pictures of those pods and they are probably the perfect example of the Douglah pod yet. Comparing them to the Jonah is also perfect because that is exactly what it is, a chocolate 7 Pod. I got another strain from TriniHottie and grew it out last year that are longer in shape, not typical 7 blocky, but all the great Douglah heat and flavor. Saved seeds and growing out to see what I get, very excited to find a good Douglah for my garden for many years to come. What is the point of cloning, why not just isolate the plant and save seed? Thanks billyboy for the seed.

Hey Cappy

Your welcome mate! The only reason I took so many clones of that plant is because of how much I value it! basically just wanted to back it up, it produces what I envisage in my mind the perfect Douglah pod.

Interestingly some of the seed plants I have grown out from this plant have produced not brown but red pods!

billyboy:)

Moving right along to round 2 potted up my two billyboy Douglah, three Chocolate Scorpions, couple Primo 7 Pots and all the rest of my C. Chinense. Round 1 plants are sitting in a sunny south facing sliding door way. They get good sun and should be fine till plant out. I still have one more seed tray yet to pot up for a round 3 under my HID. My Douglah only got 9 days under the halide but turbo charged their growth and look ready to harden off later this month. I will have 240+ plant starts using just one HID lamp one shop light and a sunny window. Seed tray from this morning and newly potted plants this afternoon.:)

I didn't waste any plants this year, every seedling gets planted up. I always give plants away to friends and family or anybody who comes over and shows an interest in peppers. Don't think I want to get in to sales, but if anyone is traveling thru Charleston we can arrange to meet up. I have over 150 final containers, but what I don't find a home for will be put in the ground around the house. Planted the last 10 from the original tray so I now have 130 Douglah plants going ATM, will trim back here.

Here are my Douglah from the first round 10 days since being potted up from the seed tray. They get direct sun for about 4.5 hours a day and should sustain them till plant out in about 3 weeks.:)
