I'll never shake another freshly sanitized carboy of wort.

Just Say No to handling heavy, glass, slippery-ass shit ...

Hope you didn't crack it.

Yes, outdoor has rubber washers but those can be removed. Due to our water and replacing stuff year after year I went brass where I could.
Me too, for the sake of an extra $10 or whatever it was, not having to replace the buggers each year is worth it.  Our water is great, but the sun here just smashes cheap outdoor plastics.

Nothing happened ... just an improvement, is all ... now I can oxygenate from the O2 tank (once I fill it) while the wort is recirculating to chill w/ the inline O2 infuser ...

The whole 'shake the wort to aerate it' before pitching routine was dangerous enough for 1 gallon, and just ludicrous for 3 gallon batches ...

At the point in time when it needs to be done, the thing is covered in slippery ass cleaner/sanitizer film ...

I have only ever used plastic fermenters for this reason.  While I would love to watch the fermentation through the glass, 5 gallon batches for me are best done in a  lighter vessel that is less prone to cracking…

I actually use gravity to aerate.  My urn or pot sits up high enough to enable it to flow out and splash into the fermenter.  I have never picked up an infection from this approach, and never had a stuck ferment.  I also use a brewing spoon on bigger beers and use that to fan the wort around the fermenter as its flowing in.  I usually get a good 5 inches of foam after racking to the fermenter this way.

When the recipe for something says apply X PPM O2 for Y seconds, though ... how do you ensure you've met the spec? ...

Have you met RM? You two would get along swimmingly!

Ummm best guess, get a regulator and a stop watch?

No, although the beer recipes and posts he's made suggest we'd get on just fine!

I can imagine you guy's brewing ... admiring one another's practical solutions and DIY solutions ...

I did DIY for a long time ... but this is supposed to be fun hobby time, and fun for me is wanking with tooling and optimizing things ...

Haha ...

Really, though ... I think my history of automobiles tells the whole story ...

VW GLi
Nissan 240SX
Saab 900t
Honda Accord
VW GTi

... and I'd get back into an Accord in a heartbeat again, next ...

Literally bouncing back and forth from inspired-and-unreliable to reliable-and-unremarkable with each change, LOL.

LOL!

The average accord driver here is over 65 and drives 10 under the limit.

I have always liked a combination of reliability and power myself.  Driving is both a means of transport and an adrenaline rush for me.  Got into V6's and V8's as soon as I could.

It should not be surprising that I prefer tuning.

My Accord had literally zero repairs in the years I had it ... unheard of better than every other car by a mile, and the closest other car was the Nissan, which was the 2nd most reliable.

On the downside, there's that plastic-y feeling each time you close the door.

My 1.8t w/ a chip and turbo is way more fun than my V6 VTEC Accord was - and it's got literally half the displacement ...

As usual, our cars give away our personalities ...

All 4's and a 6 for me ... no rotary's, 8's, 12's, or 16's to date ...

Give it time, though.

Haha ...

All of my 6's and 8's have been tuned and modified. No turbos yet though. I found my sweet spot - a manual Porsche Cayman S 2006. 0-60 in 5.2 seconds with chrono pack and borla exhaust.

Well ... I think you should add a programmable fermentation controller to your brew rig then ... hop to it!

I just wrapped today's work and am off to brew a Summer Wheat and make an Ellen Pao-tty melt.

I'm going to no-chill this batch, I think ...

I'm not very invested in this batch, just want to get it brewed so as not to be wasteful ...

Last brew for the thread, Summer Wheat ...

Any leaks go in the sink, just in case ...

Pump's off = air temp ... alarm button's off, mash time pre-programmed ...

Next, filtered water ... 18 quarts (4.5 gallons) ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436739659.679595.jpg

I recommend keeping track, not counting in your head ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436739721.033644.jpg

Maybe I can remember to use the tea-ball for the hops this time =/

But if not, I've hacked a filter/catcher ...

Up next ...

Prepare grain bag by taking it outside and punching it to remove all the dust/flour crap ...

And once the temp is mash temp, drop it in, and add the withheld two quarts of water ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436740010.249210.jpg

This will lower the temp a bit ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436740046.534583.jpg

But only 3F, which is the time to flip the switch to arm the alarm and engage the timer function ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436740102.787653.jpg

Two mins later we're back at mash temp ...

And the countdown begins automatically ...

After 5 mins, the color of the hot liquor in the tubes is:

Time for a beer ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436740223.618962.jpg

Cats, LOL.

As I was mentioning elsewhere ... I forgot to lower my pH w/ the citric acid tonight, didn't use pH5.2, and are probably going through the motions for no reason =/ ...

Oh well, I need practice brewing, regardless ...

I just need to decide whether it's worth taking the time to chill the wort and get more equipment involved and dirty, or whether to just no-chill it to save time and energy and cleaning time etc ...

I'm making a checklist now, so it can't happen again ...

Bah! ...

Continuing on ...

Recaptured liquor from the grain basket ... poured back in to the boil ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765347.935339.jpg

Decided to put some apricot in with 12 mins left in the boil ...

Too small a tea ball ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765478.943497.jpg

Ended up freeing the hops ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765532.278115.jpg

Tons of hot break, worse than usual ... wheat.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765575.397315.jpg

Ice water to draw for second half of chilling, first half from sink faucet ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765639.534407.jpg

Extra filter hack ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765690.803839.jpg

Chillin' ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765763.825032.jpg

Everything but the plate chiller and oxygen ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765794.309793.jpg

With switching over from faucet to ice water at 111F, made it down to 73F tonight ...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436765871.090913.jpg

Gravity is low, like other bunk brews ...

OG ~1048-1049 ...

Pitched anyways ...

Put an airlock on the porter, and setup the new brew w/ the fermwrap and probe ...

Too bad. Nice brew, not going to have fermentables =/

Wheat made a real mess of the bazooka screens, too.

Bah!!!

Looks like the 2nd wave will end w/ the same 1 out of 3 record as the 1st wave ...

I'm really happy to be done w/ kits, to be honest.

In this batch of 3x BBS there were two Styrian Goldings and a pack of Kent Goldings ... the grains weren't the same in one of the kits, as the other two, and 2x of the 3x yeast packets were 1 month out of date ...

Yeah, stoked to be on to my regular ingredients for the next brew ... just got to remember to use the citric acid this time - duh!

Well, I might get lucky ...

Maybe something about the grist for this beer lowered the pH a bit, or else the water was better ... or ... the yeast were happy getting pitched at exact room temp 73F ... or ...

CHEERS!

Dinner was supposed to have been corned beef tonight, but clean-in-place was a PITA getting wheat crap out of the bazooka filters etc, and it turned into more of a:
