I want to try tapping one of the silver maples around here (Kansas)

Ive read that the syrup is a little less sweet than sugar maple, but still really good. This probably would have been a good winter to do it, cause it flows when its cold out right?

Still sick over here, flu symptoms have all but given way to horrible coughs and snotty noses. The kids were really sad. Last night wasn't much fun

They say the best time to tap is when the nights at in the 20's and days in the 40's. I'm no pro at it, but that works for me. and I think your silver maples just have less sugar in the sap so it requires more then a sugar maple... Good luck!
 
In the teens for highs this week here so no sap here, so I'll be staying inside tending to the seedling garden.
 
 
Good morning. everyone. I--70 had a couple of natural (not man-driven) avalanches this past weekend. One of them moved a Toyota Tundra down into a gully that took rescuers many hours to retrieve. No one was hurt. Good skiing weather, though, with all the snow we've been having in the mtns.
 
With the maple syrup, it takes 40 to 1, sap to syrup, for sugar maples. Usually March/April are the best months for sap production. Dan knows the correct temps for the sap to flow. Plus the trees need to be 30 (?) years old to produce extra sap. since the trees need their sap for life.
