Good morning. 32-49F, getting cooler. Baby layette assembly this morning, more seeds to peruse, then a quick lunch. So Harry and DR, what are you planning for this year’s gardens? Anything different? My plans will be close to last years except for using a simple nylon bag over my beans to deter Japanese beetles. It may be a bust, but those critters are ravenous.
Have a wonderful day. Take it slow and enjoy the little happenings, like when the flowers start to wake up from winter.
Not much new this year. Here's what we're planning on growing: Beans (Bush), Beets, Broccoli,
Broccoli Raab (this is new for us), Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Lettuce (Leaf), Lettuce (Romaine), Garlic, Onion (sets), Peas (English), Peppers (Chinense, Annuums), Potatoes (Gold and Red), Radishes, Tomatoes (cherry and beefsteaks, no paste tomatoes this year .... the boss is not planning on canning tomato product(s)) and
Leeks (this is new for us). For many of these we will have a Spring and a Summer/Fall planting.
We have decided not to grow: Sweet Corn, Eggplant, Cucumbers (not processing/canning pickles this year), Summer Squash, Melons, Tomatillos and Winter Squash. We've determined that these are not economical or the volume is just too great for us to grow and we can find these locally, in the smaller quantity that we actually consume, without the hassle of growing them ourselves. These also attract many pests to our garden.
We'll have herbs (Basil, Thyme, Sage and Cilantro) in the stock tanks and planters. We've had volunteer Dill and Chives for many years.
We always have strawberries, blackberries, apples and pecans.
This year we are also planning to grow various flowers (including sunflowers) in any "unclaimed" beds in the main garden.
We haven't done this for several years.
The Japanese beetles are attracted to our knock-out rose bushes (we got at least 2 dozen of them around the house and shop). These keep the beetles occupied and out of the garden. I set bag traps for them (away from the garden) and typically do not spray unless it's a massive infestation. The beetle invasion is relatively new for us. We never had them until 10 years ago.
I can't think of anything new we'll be doing in "care" or "process".
Our main garden insect pests are: Colorado potato beetles (I hand pick these off), Cabbage worms, Grasshoppers and Tomato Horn Worms (I hand pick these off).
Other nuisance pests are: Whitetail Deer (major problem), Cottontail Rabbits, Squirrels, Raccoons and Possums.
