Guru's Garden - Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

Just starting this glog now so it's one less thing to do in a few months when I'm knee deep in compost and getting things in the ground.

Not much to report at the moment. Strains yet to be determined, but I'll probably end up growing too many like always...lol

Only thing that's going on right now is a clean back patio and the chickens doing their part turning over my compost pile on the daily. Intersted in seeing how the soil microbes appreciate the added chicken poop!

EDIT UPDATE: This glog has turned into an ongoing overwintering, greenhouse and soil building how-to!

Nice work stud. I have a variety very similar to the rooster spur called chi-chien. They get the same explosive clusters...very cool.
Love them. The perfect sandwich pepper, or garnish in any Thai dish.

Looking good Guru. I have an unknown Artemesia in a pot. I'll have to post a photo, see if you can ID it.
Post it!

Looking good sir.  I need to read up on the absinthe.
I suggest you visit one of the great absinthe forums and get the real information. However, I will give you the history of absinthe in a few short sentences:

Back in the late 1700's France had a horrible grape blight, price of wine went sky high, female herbalists were already making absinthe for a wide variety of ailments, it is completely safe and perfectly healthy to consume, in the absence of reasonably priced wine, absinthe became VERY popular. The wine industry there did not like this and therefore a huge propaganda campaign was unleashed in attempt to spread misinformation and fear about the drink. It never stopped people from drinking it though. Bottom line is...its delicious, safe and healthy. You're not going to hallucinate or chop your ears off. :)

Awesome thanks!

I had always read that there A. absinthe was mildly poisonous.
I've not seen that A. pontica that I can remember. What is it's pungency level?
Your peppers are becoming giants!

Yeah. There is more "poison" in oregano than in wormwood. hahaha

The a. pontica is just roman wormword used for color infusion after distilation of the spirit in the final step. The a. absinthium is used in the holy trinity, along with anise and fennel for the first maceration step. There are many other herbs I use as well.

The pontica is not bitter like the absinthium so it can be macerated after the distillation without negative effects on the taste of the spirit, while still turning the drink green.

Hey THP. Garden has been getting a daily shower and great temps. Snapped just a few shots to keep things fresh in this here glog.

Here's the extreme corking I was talking about. Even on very immature pods. These are HOT Jalapenos :)

Everything else is going well. Pretty soon I'll be knee deep in pods and using the drying rack again.

Everything is coming into stride now. How's the patio grow kicking along? Haven't seen any pics of those babies yet.

I moved up to 25 gal pots this season and will see how things go, make a decision if I will go bigger or not. Damn does it take a lot of stuff to fill those things up. Don't have all the room and time to have the compost operation you have going on, my wallet sure wishes I did too.

Ya know, I'm not sure. Got it from a friend. So I dubbed it, Tennyson's Jalapeno (Extreme Corking) want some seeds?

Sure, always up for some seeds of new Jals. Love them. Let me know when you have some ready.

No patio this year. Just the in ground plot! 25 #1 gallon pots or pot "up to 25 gallons"? If #1 pots, I remember those days! Constantly watering and chasing my tail keeping the nutrient content in containers. Root bound ABOUND all the time.

Honestly dude, the compost doesn't take any of my time really. Just the time it takes to scrape our plates after dinner or clean out the fridge of old produce when we come back with new groceries or need to refrigerate new produce out of the garden. The egg shells after breakfast in the morning, etc...

Room, however, it does take! If you plant to create a pile that will BE your soil each year, that is. If you're just trying to create a small compost bin for supplementing store bought mediums, now that can be done in a container or small area and wouldn't require much space at all. That's not my style though. I'm in it for the microbial win and "Go big" type of growing. "keep your friends close and your humus sources even closer!"

I plan on making the compost pile even larger now. After each season, I'll let this plot decompose into itself and keep adding stuff all over again. I scoped out a nice new pile of mulch as well, so that baby is gonna get a new home at my place soon! It's awesome having free soil :)

Those Jalapeños certainly have extreme corking? Do they grow to a good size as well?? Things look ready to take off there Rich!!
Yes. They get quite large! Great flavor and heat on them. I picked that one way too premature. Just had to have it :) Yeah, the plants are DUG IN and when I touch the base its apparent that the roots have taken hold. Things will be getting big really soon now.

No patio grow? What the what?

No on the #1's. I got ten 25 gallon root pouches already filled and some 15 gals arriving probably tomorrow that will get filled with a few plants that are in 1 and 3 gal air pots right now, have a number of 5 gallon pouches and air pots already.

My work schedule keeps me gone for 3 weeks at a time so there is no turning, adding to or watering if needed on the compost pile. Momma has got her hands full while I'm away just taking care of the youngens, work and turning the drip line on. Tried to connect a timer but fuggin thing leaked and not about to think about that bill with a constant drip for a month! Will reassess that again when I get home next week. do need to add a good layer of mulch on top of the containers but so far their kicking it. Went with a soil mix similar to ganja girl or whatever her name is off grasscity. That and aact foliar and I think they'll be good to go.

The in ground stuff is all gonna be finest kind for you.

Plants look great. Thats a nice looking house. Do you use a heat source? I'm waiting for a hoopbender as we speak. I'm going to need a house for late Fall if I want ripe peppers. Short season here. Will use it for early Spring, and shade for intense Summer.
