Guru's Garden - Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

Just starting this glog now so it's one less thing to do in a few months when I'm knee deep in compost and getting things in the ground.

Not much to report at the moment. Strains yet to be determined, but I'll probably end up growing too many like always...lol

Only thing that's going on right now is a clean back patio and the chickens doing their part turning over my compost pile on the daily. Intersted in seeing how the soil microbes appreciate the added chicken poop!

Hope everyone has had a decent winter so far and here's to happy germination!

EDIT UPDATE: This glog has turned into an ongoing overwintering, greenhouse and soil building how-to!

Plants look great. Thats a nice looking house. Do you use a heat source? I'm waiting for a hoopbender as we speak. I'm going to need a house for late Fall if I want ripe peppers. Short season here. Will use it for early Spring, and shade for intense Summer.
The last time I had it up, I used a small space heater in the last part of December through to February. Even on the coldest days, I could keep it above 45F. Last time I had crush and run as a floor base, and this time it will be natural earth.  This time around I have more direct sunlight on the structure, but it is also bigger so time will tell what the trade off is there. Really, you want functional solar masses to absorb all that solar heat throughout the day and release it slowly during the night. It helps things out a lot. Either way, it will be plenty more space and available light than the basement for overwinters, and seeing as how its 20x15 - I should have enough space in there to plant cool season crops and do other projects. Gonna be my get away, sanctuary nook :)

Looks great, Guru.
I've been tumblin' around an idea of a temporary covering for 2 of my raised beds with a single 10' x 12 or 16'  knee-walled hoop.
I have more snow potential to design against, but would be good for me to get onions sprouts started in for sure.
So many projects, so little time.

And $$$ :)

Cool! I could live with 45F. So could the plants. I might have to do a little extra like you said, beings it gets to 0 and below sometimes. Black water jugs with a alcohol/water mix might work. I was thinking about putting 6ft hoop row inside 12x20 house. You gave me something to think about.

Thanks for the info.

PG I gotta quick question.

Do you trim your plants or just let them roll on?

I like the tree look so I have been thinking about trimming some of mine up.
When I overwinter them or doing a Bonchi thing, I do. Otherwise its all natural.

Quick update with a new lens! I'll really do a proper and in depth update really soon. Promise.

Alright homebread thank you.
Reading your thread on overwintering now. Gotta decide if I can keep them alive in my unheated garage.
should be ok if you keep em above freezing.

Looking great Rich, one of your Mole's has some burn or bugs to it thought :)
damn. You're right! I missed that! Gotta go check and see. Hopefully a stuck dead leaf or something.

Yeah here is zero light when the door is down....

Beautiful plants! I like the look of that chuncho - very symmetrical. And speaking of symmetry, when that MOA pod is ripe it's gonna be too pretty to eat! Take a bunch of pics of it and see if you can sell a couple to the Jamaican MOA for promotional purposes. Grade A++!

You have lights in your garage? A three pack of cfls is like six bucks. Or a quick look around craigslist could turn up some free lights?
Bet I can come up with something. I will do some more reading. Thanks PG

Anyone in my neck of the woods (ATL area) have a roll of greenhouse plastic they are willing to sell today?

Nope, but I will be mighty interested in your greenhouse when it is finished. Make sure to post pics.

In Georgia, how late in the year can you go with a greenhouse and some passive heaters? Christmas?

Hey Rich, great to see you continuing to grow perfect looking plants year in year out.  The new camera lens make for some great close ups.  Would love to meet up sometime.  Next time I'm heading to ATL of if your ever come down to CHS please let me know would love to get together.  You are some much more interesting than just peppers my friend.

Since some of yall have tobacco growing does anyone know how to identify the type? I was given 4 tobacco plants at the farmers market and they werent labeled.

I can usually keep overwinters alive, start other cold season crops, mess with photosensitive plants and start seeds pretty much throughout the entire winter and into spring. It has gotten down into the 40's in there before but that day, it was snowing and really cold.

Wish I had some for us both!
Found some stuff with decent reviews last night. Should be here by this weekend, so I'm going to have all the edges and burs prepped, and ready for plastic by then!
