Guru's Glog 2012

Is it that time again already? Feels like yesterday I was picking final harvests, disonnecting drip lines out in the garden and digging up pepper plants for the winter. Where does the time go?

Anyhow, I see people are already in full swing here on THP. What a lovely site. I'll be the first to admit, I'm running a little late this year, but I have an excuse I'm prepared to live with....

:P I needed a vacation! Well that, and a good friend of mine asked if I wanted to open up a restaurant in Thailand. Who says no to that? Not I.

We had a great time. Its paradise, and very cheap. Above all, as a chili head, Thai food is a gift from God himself. I ate better and fresher food than you could ever get in the US, for pennies a meal. The trip was awesome. I think Im even suffering from seperation anxiety...lol I couldn't even begin to go into all the things that happened on this trip, without this starting to sound like more of a blog than a GLOG, so I'll spare you guys for now.

Anyway, down to business. Before I left, I started a 72 cell super hot tray and pulled the mothers from last year outside.

The lady bugs went to work on the mothers, and I felt confident that Mrs. Guru could take care of the germination while I was away.

Now, I'd be lying if I said I never worried for a second while I was away. I had already started my seeds a week or two later than usual and now I was going to be gone while they were supposed to be "born"....lol but I knew the better option for my sanity was to let go, remember I was on vacation and not think about the seeds. Im glad I did, because the ole lady did ok! :P

I got back, germ rates were near 100% and it was on to potting up!

Quick make shift shade house for the tender seedlings after a transplant and a break in the clouds.

Had a promising C. Chacoense germinate yesterday too! Excited bc it will be the first time I've ever grown one out. I think Chris sent me a few wild species about 7 years ago and this seed was from that pack! Cool. Love growing out new species.

Well the plants have gotten the fungi boost and the bacterial boost teas. Now its just waiting for the hydrolysate to bake. That will be their first feeding of the year! If Im on par with most years, that will hold them till around August then its another round of fungi, bacteria, and feed. In that order baby! yeah.... :welcome: to organics
Rich,

All looks well with your crop. Nice.
We gonna grab that beer(s) soon?
Remind me what neck of the woods u are in...
Regards, Chris
Thanks man! Sure thing. Im leaving for Disney with the kids on Sat so when I get back a week later, you got it! Im in Stockbridge

you will be remembered and that's a big freaking stem

hey guru got question...whats the problem if the bottom leafs is yellowing...i just didn't pay attention to much since i don't see any problem of the growth of my plants..is that something to worry about?

They will eat off the bottom leaves first when N is lacking. No big deal, just give em a feeding. Also bottom leaves are closer to the ground where splashing (disease) can be. If the plant senses infection of the slightest, you will note that it will abort the leaf and stem, yellowing first then dropping it. If the yellow leaves you speak of are still looking good and not damaged or diseased, then its just saying "hey I want more food" :)

cool thanks...does fish emulsion works?

Emulsions are the lowest of the low. They are the byproducts of byproducts of byproducts. Void of all natural oils, pasteurized, and further away from what you want idealy. Depends on the company but most people selling "fish emulsions" are selling crap. Hydrolysate is where its at

thanks again...or can i just brew another tea?i don't know were to buy hydrolysate here in hawaii

BUY it? Make it bro! Go catch some fish, chop em up, put em in a bucket, bake in sun and stir daily. You're in HAWAII! :) Plenty of fish around there I think... ;)

yea plenty fish lol.. can i use frozen ones since theres a ton in the freezer ... does it need to be super dry? sorry lots of newbie questions

No man, just get em out the freezer, chop em up, and you're on your way. You can ferment it into sawdust, char, or water. I prefer water. Its faster. No problem dude. anytime

If I had to live with just ONE source of nutrients for my soil it would be fish or kelp. They are the two very best things for creating a nutrient rich, active soil food web. Hands down.

thanks again and last question for now before going school, so ferment in water with just the fish in it?

Well I start with other ingredients for my fungal and bacterial tea. Like kelp and worm, then the left over remains get fermented into my hydrolysate after the brews are done. So technically there are prob still remnants of those ingredients but the main deal is fish. Just fish and water :)

I should have used the fish in my tea and ferment it...i throwed them in the trash ;(....can I put chopped fish onto the soil it self like when transplanting?

Sure just make sure you dont allow young roots to touch the parts directly. A layer of soil ontop the fish, then the root ball, then fill in. You won't notice a boom until the fish does its thing and the roots start getting to it. Same stuff just slower process :)
