Gallon pot up question.  Which way do you all like to go, taller and thinner, or shorter and fatter on the pots?

First number is diameter second number is height.  A skinny pot would give more depth for the roots, but a wider pot would give a bigger spread.  Or at these minor differences does it not matter?  Never potted up to gallons before and I think I may have to this season.

7 1/2"

5 3/4"

6 3/8"

7 1/4"

Just through browsing and reading (ie not practice), I think deeper is the way to go for peppers. The roots like to reach downward. However, I have had no problems in shallower pots as well, and I've had success with plants in pots that I was told wouldn't work for peppers, so take it for what its worth. If I was buying pots, though, I'd go for depth.

Finally decided to pot up my two pots stuffed with Jaques today.

Pot number one.

And here they are potted up.

Here are the two I can't get apart without killing one of them.  Might try to get creative with them.

Here are the first ones I potted up.

Here is a four pack that I am going to let grow for a while before I pot them up.

Thought I'd throw in some of my early Manzano plant.

Current count (including the double plant) is 25 plants.  If I don't sell/trade/give some of these plants away I will be needing to come up with some GOOD sauce recipes!!!

Kudos on the double. I'd do a little Bonchi research for a time frame and such and try to corkscrew and fuse them for a nice little potted plant this fall.

Your Manzano is  looking feisty. How old is she?

I also vote for Deep. When I bought new pots this year I bought the deep version of 3 1/2s. - hoping they can get by in them all the way to plant out. But I'm starting to be doubtful about that.

Manzano was planted in Sept or Oct last year.  As soon as my gallons show up, I will probably pot it up.  And I was thinking of a bonchi of some sort.

Glad I saved this stuff from my old job.  Helps keep plants close to the light while they are just getting going.  Got an entire tote filled with various sizes.

Tomatillo plants are doing well.

And I couldn't resist planting something, so I planted one Swiss Chard seed pod.  Hopefully that will curb my craving to dig in the dirt.  Garden currently has 3 feet of snow on it.

My thoughts are that what matters most is total volume.  If there's still a choice, maybe base it on whether one would get knocked over easier than the other?

The 7 1/2" diameter pot has 22 more cubic inches of dirt but will take up more space.

Great update HJeff! Monzano is looking quite strong... Planning on saucing done of those pods? What are some of your current favorite sauces or ferments?

I am not planning on saucing the manzano.  I am just hoping to get a few to eat this year.  My favorite sauces so far has been just what sent to me from Annie and Greg.  Those sauces have been stellar.  Wanting to do a 7 pod burgundy plum sauce once the weather warms up and I can smoke my burgs.

That Manzano is really taking off Jeff!

Glad the babies separated well, I have a few I've been doing that with, so far so good.

I agree volume ;)

Chard hasn't popped up since yesterdays planting yet ;)

At least it is keeping my addiction under control  so I don't start peppers and friends earlier than I need.  I did put some 72 cell trays into the off grow table and it holds 4 trays

Too bad I can't get them all started in there at the same time.

March 1st, rest of peppers & Onions
March 15th, tomatoes
April 1st, chard/lettuce/spinach/lettuce/cabbage/kale/kohlrabi/cukes (usually direct sow, but wanna try experiment)

Direct sow will be weather dependent.

Plant out should be May 15th-20th

So 20 days and I should be getting busy busy busy until plant out.  Plus fishing season will kick off once the ice is off the lake!!!

I have the same issue as you. Can't get all the seeds started at the same time since I don't have the room. I am limited to two flats at a time. That is full at the moment so I am trying to creatively figure out how to get some more 'penos to germinate...

We'll see who has the right approach with onions but I suspect that either of our times will work fine. About 1/2 of mine have popped over the last few days.

I don't have a space issue with germinating, I have an issue with room after potting up.  I have a small one tray green metal table that I can use to germ with and I haven't needed it since I built the white table.

I might get the table full when I get all the stuff planted April 1st.  Going to have one tray full of straight lettuce.  But by then I am hoping to have a lot of the peppers out to the other table in the basement if the temps down there are up where they should be by then.

Got some peppers that are a little leggy on me again this year.  Not real leggy, just a little flimsy.  Might of planted the peat pellet deeper when I potted up.  Not sure if I can plant them deeper like tomatoes.

In two days temps will be below -10 here and then a week after that it is suppose to hit 40....I hope that's our HUMP week for winter!!!

I planted all of my jalapeños up their cots when I up potted them since they were a did leggy. They are doing fine and not the least bit leggy anymore. I suspect they will grow roots eventually but the real reason I did that was to get the roots deeper for bottom watering and to stop the leggyness. .

Even if you had 50 more tables you'd still have space issues potting up. These guys take over everywhere they can. At least they process our gasses and give us oxygen.

Delicious oxygen.

And peppers. Don't forget the pods.
