Ya, my dad has one of those as well, but I don't think that's the format for youtube (I think they need an mpg or something).
Just looked at the thread views, 15,803! Wow!
If you can get your VHS to DVD using your Dad's DVD Player, I can teach you how to get it working for YouTube.
As soon as you get your DVD in hand, go ahead and put that in your DVD Drive on your computer. (If you dont have one, you can pick one up for less that 40 bucks at any local electronics retailer)
From here, you can follow a this guide I found:
How To Convert DVD VOB to AVI (VOB to AVI)
How To Convert DVD VOB to AVI (VOB to AVI)
First of all you will need the two softwares (freeware) below. Download it here or choose another source:
:: VirtualDub MPEG-2 (
http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/VirtualDub-MPEG2.zip )
:: AC-3 ACM Codec (
http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/AC3ACM/AC3ACM.zip )
Step 1
Unzip VirtualDub and AC-3 ACM Codec (save both in two different folders).
Step 2
In the folder you unzip AC-3 ACM click with the right button on “AC3ACM.inf” and select Install.
Step 3
Open the VirtualDub (“VirtualDub.exe”)
Step 4
On the File tab select Open video file. Choose the VOB or MPEG-2 file you want to open.
Step 5
On the Video tab select Compression. Choose what compression method you want. If you do not choose a compression method the file will be very large, really huge.
Step 6
On the Audio tab select the option Full processing mode.
Step 7
On the File tab select Save as AVI. VirtualDub will begin the conversion process.
That´s it!

Of course, if for some reason these links break, the utilities are easily found using google.
The resulting video may be too large for YouTube depending on the length of your video--- but once you get it into digital format, you are but a few cyber-steps from having it on YouTube or someplace like that.
I as well as many others will be able to help you from there.
Cheers and I wish you the best of luck!
Looking into getting my hands on some seeds shortly.
Any tips on growing them?
